We enjoyed our guided tour of the building, seeing the many different exhibits and the discussion on language rights. Tours are offered in English and French and there are also many different accommodations available on the museum’s mobile app. All videos include open captioning, descriptive audio, American Sign Language (ASL) and Langue des signes québécoise (LSQ). The CMHR is 100% accessible and is the only destination in the entire province built to be accessible to everyone. It shows why universal design and consulting different groups of people during the construction process is important when designing an inclusive space. Often accessibility is an afterthought, or places that are supposed to be accessible clearly have not consulted anyone in a wheelchair or anyone who has pushed a wheelchair. We run into these obstacles all the time and appreciate the lengths the CMHR has gone to facilitate all people. The students involved had never played rugby before and didn’t know what to expect going into their first game: which they won. And then won again. Suddenly, they became a rugby team that was not only trying rugby, but succeeding at it. The team went on to finish the regular season 6-1-1, finish in 2nd place. They then won their semi-final game and, after a gruelling match that included a comeback and overtime, lost in the final match against an experienced St. Paul’s team. While disappointed they didn’t win the championship, they made a brand new program look amazing with their work ethic, attitude, and results, and laid the groundwork for this program to continue growing next year. We would like to give a big THANK YOU to the community for making a great space for everyone to enjoy! soccer camp next weekend! Are you wanting to take your soccer game to the next level? Do you need some skills development or pointers to improve your game? Attend the Morris soccer skills camp to learn from a certificated soccer coach what you are needing. Soccer has been a part of Randy Ives’ life since he was ten years old. He played competitively for 16 years. He started coaching in 1996 and just finished a successful year with the U15 girls, taking them all the way to the Manitoba provincial finals. This grassroots soccer camp comprises daily sessions in the morning and afternoon. We divide players into two groups: junior-high and high-school. Each group will attend four 1.5 hour on field training sessions over the two days. There are limited spaces available for each session, this ensures players receive coaching attention they need. Coaches focus on activities that build a player’s technique, individual skill development, and game insight. Injury prevention through warm-ups, fun team games play and other soccer related activities are part of a training session. Learn about teamwork and effort while enjoying a dynamic and well-balanced soccer camp. grads continue to raise funds!Members of the Class of 2023 were out again this past week raising funds for the event that is Grad 2023! Gratitude & Intentions/Goals PostersThe 10G Career Development LifeWorks Class created a couple of posters that support life work balance and overall well being over the last couple weeks. Part of any fulfilling life is to be grateful for what you have in or accomplished. According to Harvard Health, “gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.” Read the full article [HERE]: As well, looking toward the future and goal setting can also bring about more joy and a more satisfying life. According to Positive Psychology, “Goals play a dominant role in shaping the way we see ourselves and others. A person who is focused and goal-oriented is likely to have a more positive approach towards life and perceive failures as temporary setbacks, rather than personal shortcomings.” This is part of the Growth Mindset by Carol Dweck, that we have talked about in this class. See the article [HERE] Usually these are done at the beginning of a new calendar year, or month to reflect on the year or month past and look toward the fresh year or month. Ask your students what the are grateful for and share your gratitude. Share your hopes and dreams for the future and find out what they hope to accomplish. It’s quite interesting to see the wide range of topics. I have some news to share with our Maverick community; I am retiring as Vice Principal of Morris School at the end of June this year. I am very excited for the new challenges and learning that lie ahead of me but it is also hard to say goodbye to all of the students, parents and staff that I have worked with so closely over the years. I feel so privileged and honoured to have not only worked with such an amazing school community, but also to have been able to return to as an alumni to be a teacher in Early, Middle and Senior Years, a Resource teacher in the 7-12 areas, and lastly, a Vice Principal in my hometown. It is a great feeling to give back to the school that gave me so much as a student. And, what an adventure it has been! I have so many amazing memories including teaching children of former students, working beside former teachers as colleagues, drama productions and dinner theatres, Mavs Create Change cake walks and sundae sales, yoga & wellness fun, Mav Activity Day, volleyball, MB Theatre Centre groups, and yes, the list goes on and on. I have always loved what I do and I have thoroughly enjoyed working with you all. I love what I do so… I can’t just walk away. Thanks to fundraising lunches, craft sales, and a divisional grant, our school playground will soon becoming a nice place to be. Thank you to all who have contributed to make this happen! Way to Go, MAV's! the courts project thanks you! BBQ style! As the Red River Wellness Committee gets closer and closer to their fundraising goal of $283 195.00, we hosted a fundraising BBQ thanks to the tremendous opportunity provided to us by Sun Valley Co-op. Sun Valley Co-op offered to host a BBQ lunch for our school community this past Wednesday. To take full advantage of this opportunity, we also ran a raffle (thanks to Morris School Welding and Diane Alarie for their creative donations), and a sod-turning ceremony to commemorate the start of construction in early July. The lunch was topped off by great performances by the Senior Years' Jazz band (along special guest musicians Mrs. Zimmerman and alumnus Josh Nickel) as people enjoyed their lunch, some conversation, and some music. The committee wants to thank everyone, yet again, for their support. Our fundraising goal is at the home stretch as we are now under $20 000 away from reaching the final fundraising total to complete all phases of the project.
