Sad news at morris schoolWe received some sad news on Wednesday evening. One of our own Mavericks, Grade 12 student Jaydon Gibbs passed away suddenly from complications he's experienced with his heart since birth. For those who knew Jaydon, they reflected on a quiet, respectful, pleasant, & kind young man of character. He will be missed a great deal by his family, friends, and the Morris School Community. We appreciated the support of our divisional crisis response team as well as our in house faculty and staff for being there for our staff and students over the past few days. We offer our sincere sympathies to Jaydon's family and friends. May he rest in peace. Thank you, Mr. WillemsToday was Mr. Willems last day in his Grade 5/6 classroom. Mr. Willems has been filling in for Mrs. Skoglund, who has been away on maternity leave. Mr. Willems has been an excellent addition to our staff over the past few months and we would like to thank him for his contribution to our school community. Mrs. Skoglund has extended her maternity leave until the end of Spring Break, so Mr. Justin Antoski will be taking the role of the Grade 5/6 homeroom teacher. Mr. Antoski has been in and around the school since September as a supply teacher. He has filled in for many teachers in the building and is extremely excited to be taking on the role. The access room has been hopping!!Students in the Access classroom have been busy with their cross-curricular Winter Wonderland Unit! In addition to their regular duties and activities, they studied, “The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe” by C.S. Lewis. Students read and listened to the novel, answered questions, learned some new vocabulary and watched the movie. They compared and contrasted the book and the movie and wrote book reviews. Students even tried Turkish Delight for the first time, and painted a watercolour, Narnia-themed evergreen forest. The students also created a gingerbread village from recycled materials and enjoyed a Nutcracker themed day. They listened to the famous children’s story and did a directed drawing of a nutcracker. While they finished their art they listened to Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. When all their work was done, they enjoyed their own foray into the Land of Sweets with peppermint meringue cookies, chocolate covered pretzels, homemade hot chocolate and the cotton candy marshmallows they prepared themselves! Morris School YearbookRemote learning remindersThroughout the province, students from Grades 7-12 will be entering a remote learning period from Monday, January 4 to Friday, January 15. Some K-6 Morris School students have also taken the optional remote learning route as well for the aforementioned period. Teachers have communicated to each student of their expectations and schedules. Most Grade 7-12 teachers use Google Classroom, so students should be accessing their Google Classroom account daily. Other expectations are listed below as is a Remote Learning checklist prepared by our Student Services staff. Remote Learning Option (K-6)The Red River Valley School Division sent out the following information in their most recent update... On December 2, 2020, the Minister of Education announced that all Grade 7-12 students will be learning remotely for the two weeks after the Winter Break. This includes the period from January 4th up to and including January 15th. K-6 students will continue on with in-class learning following Orange Level Response guidelines with the option of being provided temporary remote learning should parents choose to keep their K-6 children home. If you have children in K-6 and are interested in the remote learning option during this 2 week period, and have not yet been in contact with your school, please contact them as soon as possible. If you select the remote learning option, it will be for the entire 2 week period. Please read the information about K-12 remote learning standards and expectations, parent/caregiver involvement and student participation requirements in the linked document below: https://www.edu.gov.mb.ca/k12/covid/support/remote_learn_standards.html Morris School has asked our respective K-6 classroom teachers to reach out to our families regarding their intentions. Please do so by the end of the day on Monday, December 14. This will allow us to plan and communicate that plan before leaving school for the Winter Break. It is the expectations of all students who choose remote to be completely and actively engaged in the remote learning. Your student's teachers will send you the schedule for your their class. A lot of work and planning has gone into the formulating of a remote learning plan. We hope those who choose this option recognize this and respond by being actively engaged. spirit week continues (Grades 7-12)some of this past week's spirit week!Alt class lends a handOn Thursday December 10, two students from ALT class went and helped to bag potatoes and onions for this year's Christmas Hampers. Its Companions, Officers and Members take to heart the motto of the Order: DESIDERANTES MELIOREM PATRIAM ("They desire a better country"). More than 7 000 people from all sectors of society have been invested into the Order. Those who bear the Order’s iconic snowflake insignia have changed our nation’s measure of success and, through the sum of their accomplishments, have helped us build a better Canada. Marcia received this honour "for her contributions to the advancement of international human rights and development, and for her steadfast advocacy of democratic governance." Congratulations to Marcia! Way to go, MAV! We can't wait to see who our next Order of Canada recipient will be! Education Minister announces remote learningThis past week, our Province's Education Minister announced a two week remote learning period for all Grades 7-12 students in Manitoba. Part of that announcement detailed a remote learning option for students in Kindergarten to Grade 6 as well. Although the rumour of an announcement was heard throughout the province, Morris School learned about this at the same time as everyone else in Manitoba. Although this will be a shift, the announcement happened just prior to the two inservice days in the Red River Valley School Division. These inservice days will be in invaluable time to ensure we have our plan in place for our students and their families. In saying that, expect some additional emails and surveys to ensure our students leave the school at Winter Break with all the things they require to be successful at home during those two weeks. Our teachers, as always, will do their best to ensure a positive experience. A more complete plan will be unveiled by the school prior to the break. Grade 3/4's "STICK" to science - magnet project! Our Grade 3/4 students have been learning about magnets over the past couple of weeks. This past week was time to apply their knowledge to a project. The students were asked to design and build either a sled or a boat that will be “powered” up and down a ramp or across the water respectively without any assistance except a magnet. This past week each class held a test day. Students field tested their designs to see if any modifications were needed to be made. What a great project and a fun way to learn! Way to go, MAV’s have you answered a tech survey?Over the last two weeks, you or your student(s) have received some type of tech survey from your classroom teacher, via email. These tech surveys are meant to inquire about your family's requirements for technology at home IF/WHEN we go to a remote learning scenario. Some of our student families have answered the survey. Thank you! We appreciate that. However, a number of families have not OR some have without thinking about their entire family's needs. We would encourage you to reflect on your needs because we would like to ensure we appropriately assist in providing the essential equipment required to be successful in a remote learning environment. A typical student will require five tech-type things to be successful.
Some may have completed the survey making some assumptions. Here are a couple assumption scenarios...
Thank you from the band/music programWe would like to extend a thank you to all those individuals who support the Band/Music Program's Poinsettia Fundraiser. The fundraiser was a big hit! Thank you as well to Mrs. Zimmerman for her tireless efforts in getting the fundraiser in motion while facing all that goes with teaching and fundraising for a band/music program during a pandemic! Thank you! Grade 1/2 superheroes!! Our Grade 1/2’s are all Superheroes! That’s something we’ve known for a while. However, over the last week or so they have formerly put names to it, advised us of their super powers, what gadgets they use as they make the world a better place, as well as what they use to disguise their real world identity to the public! We appreciate our students for sharing their creative talent as well as their super powers! Way to go, MAV’s!
