winter is here - drop offs & pick upsWith the weather turning colder, it is important to ensure you drop your students off on time and are here for their dismissal time in as timely a manner as possible. For those dropping their students off in the morning, please know that outside supervision begins at 8:30 am. At the end of the day, outside supervision ends at 3:25 pm. If a student is waiting outside at that time, our staff will bring them into the school office to wait for a parent/guardian to pick them up. If you are late dropping your student off, please have your student enter the school via the main office as there is a good chance all the other school doors will be locked for security reasons. If you are going to be late to pick up your student, please contact the office and/or the classroom teacher to let us know. With the freezing temperatures, we will bring the student inside OR have them to go straight to the school office right after dismissal and wait there until someone is able to pick them up. two mavericks receive provincial recognition!Congratulations to Andrew Penner and Payton Leflar for being recognized as A/AA/AAA Graduating Volleyball All-stars! Out of all A, AA and AAA schools across the province (roughly 150 high schools), only 24 female players and 24 male players are selected as graduating all-stars each year. This is a huge honour for both of these players, and reflects very well on their respective teams and the Maverick volleyball program. Great job Andrew and Payton! payton leflar - mhsaa athlete of the weekThe accolades keep coming for Payton Leflar this week. Not only was she recognized for her volleyball prowess by being named a Graduating All-Star, she was also recognized as the Manitoba High School Athletics Association Athlete of the Week. Here's the MHSAA press release regarding Payton's nomination... The Dairy Farmers of Manitoba High School Athlete of the Week is Payton Leflar of the Morris Mavericks volleyball team. Payton has had a tremendous volleyball season for the Mavericks. The 5'8 setter and co-captain led the team to victory at the AA Zone 4 Championship and Provincial Regional Round Qualifier, booking the Mavericks a spot at the Provincial Championships. Coach Daniel Lehmann states, "Payton's intensity during practice and commitment to improving her game is contagious. She sets the tone during every practice and game, and the team matches her intensity. This makes her a great leader on and off the court. She is a threat to score in multiple ways, but also runs the team's dynamic offense with ease." Throughout the season, Payton has averaged 6 ace serves, 4 stuff blocks and 4 kills per match. This grade 12 student maintains a 92% academic average, while also participating in golf, baseball, curling and track & field at the school. keep the traffic circle clear - please!!The circle at the east end of Toronto Avenue East is very important during the beginning and end of our school day. Parents and children will be able to ask questions about the vaccine and get answers directly from a panel of medical experts. “It’s only natural to have questions about a new vaccine, especially when it’s for children, and that’s why we’ve planned this town hall,” said Dr. Kristjan Thompson, President of Doctors Manitoba. “Hundreds of pediatricians and family physicians across the province are also ready to answer questions one-on-one, and in many cases they will be offering the vaccine in their clinic too.“ The vaccine town hall is scheduled for Tuesday, November 30, at 7:00PM. Topics will include the risks to children from COVID-19, the benefits and risks of vaccination, and the safety and effectiveness of the pediatric COVID-19 vaccine. Manitobans can submit questions in advance or register for a reminder email at ManitobaVaccine.ca/townhall. Questions can also be submitted during the live event. The berg family needs our help!Morris School remembersDespite the limitations we are faced with due to the current health orders, Morris School was determined to honour and celebrate those who have and continue to sacrifice so our school community can have the freedoms and privilege we experience everyday and possibly take for granted. Thanks to Mr. Lopez and his Maverick Media crew, Mrs. Zimmerman and the Senior Years' Concert Band, Captain Bettina McCulloch-Drake, and Mrs. Edel for creating a meaningful virtual experience for our school. Lest We Forget! Maverick Families - we need your help! We are getting into cold and flu season and of course, we are still dealing with Covid in our communities. We know that both vaccinated and unvaccinated people can spread covid which can lead to severe consequences for our students, staff, friends and loved ones. To help our community area and students/staff stay healthy and continue with in school learning, we ask that you please screen your children, even the teenagers, every day. And, we kindly ask that you keep sick students home. See the chart and Southern Health Requirements as of Oct. 15 for more info on symptoms and next steps. Despite missing their coach and mentor, Mr. Lehmann (can't tell him that the Grade 11/12 Phys. Ed. class doesn't have its workplace safety issues), Mrs. Leflar and Mrs. Edel stepped up to help the girls through their final league game of the year. Thank you to all those who have supported the girls through their season. Finally, Morris School is proud of how the girls have come together to provide our school and each other such great memories. Way to Go, MAV's! Wise words from Mr. Lehmann... Congratulations to the varsity girls volleyball squad. They have come a long way since their first practice in late August. Throughout a covid-influenced season, the team has had to deal with 6 cancelled tournaments that they missed out on, and not having a game against another team until mid October. Since mid October, the girls have played 26 games over the span of 32 days. Their record is 19 wins and 7 losses, which has them ranked as the 8th place AA team in the entire province. This past week, the team defeated St.Paul’s Barons 3-1 in the playoff semi finals, and beat Rosenort 3-2 on Wednesday night to capture the Zone 4 AA Girls Volleyball banner! The team is far from finished though: They have their sights set on hosting a provincial qualifier tournament on November 20th (Morris School is the host school), followed by attending the Provincial Championships in early December. outdoor courts project christmas raffleOur Red River Wellness Committee continues to work hard to make two new outdoor courts at Morris School a reality. If we can help prevent some of that, that is a true act of kindness! IF you are unsure of next steps if your child is sick, please call Health Links: 1-888-315-9257 or 788-8200 OR the school to speak with Mike or Corinna in Administration. We are happy to help; we are all in this together. Thank you! movember has arrived!November is a month with a bad reputation as being the first month of winter; the start of cold. But November also lends itself to a positive trend...an uplifting trend...a slightly (or significantly) hairier trend. This year, Morris School is creating a Movember page for our staff and students who wish to grow a moustache/beard for charity to raise awareness and funds for cancer affecting men more frequently (Prostate and Testicular) and Male Suicide Prevention services. If you wish to participate, email Mr. Antoski at [email protected] so he can add you to the Morris School team. If you wish to donate, follow this link: https://ca.movember.com/donate/details?teamId=2407042 and donate as much as you would like! Way to Go, MAV's! access classroom - day of the dead!Have you heard of Dia de los Muertos? The Day of the Dead celebrates life by remembering those who have died. It is mostly celebrated in Mexico and Latin America on November 1 and 2. It is becoming increasingly popular in the United States and has become even more mainstream since the release of the Disney-Pixar movie “Coco”, in 2017. The Access class traveled virtually to Mexico and learned the history and traditions of the Day of the Dead. We decorated different types of sugar skulls and made an ofrenda. It was a fun, immersive experience and the students loved the fresh empanadas, chips, homemade salsa, Mexican hot chocolate and conchas (sweet buns). Even our puzzle was finished just in time.
