Exams start on MondayOur Grade 9 through 12 students have exams scheduled for the end of their first semester. A complete schedule can be found below. If your student's course is not listed, it means that certain subject area teachers have chosen to use some other form of summative assessment for their students, therefore no formal exam will be scheduled. More details will be provided in next week's blog regarding the expectations during the exam period for our Grades 9-12 students. Specifics with regards to each exam (format, percentage of final grade, etc) can be obtained from their respective classroom teacher. We would encourage students to start developing a study schedule that will assist them in reserving some time over the next few weeks to ensure they are adequately prepared for this part of their courses. The following excerpt from Kidshelphone.ca summarizes some very good tips for students preparing for exams... It’s common to feel stressed before taking a test, especially if you don’t feel prepared. Keeping up good study habits will help you remember things at test time so you can earn better grades. Here are some study tips to help you prepare for a test: 1. Start early: start studying several days before the test/exam. You’ll have more time to learn and remember what you need to know and the information will stay in your long-term memory for final exams. Cramming the night before will increase your stress and only puts the information in your short-term memory, so you’ll likely forget and have to relearn it at the end of the term. 2. Stay positive: remember that it’s within your ability to do well on the test/exam. Try not to put too much pressure on yourself. 3. Set priorities: spend most of your study time on what’s most important for the test/exam. If you’re not sure what that is, ask your teacher. If your teacher has spent a lot of time on something in class, it’s probably important to know. 4. Make study sheets: try to summarize the main ideas in a few points. Make a single page of notes and review it several times. 5. Get help: ask your teacher to explain any material that you don’t understand. You can also ask a friend or classmate for help. 6. Go to the review class: many teachers review the important material during the class before a test or exam. It’s a good idea to attend and take as many notes as you can. This is also your chance to ask questions. Remember: study as best as you can and get a good night’s sleep before the test! We wish all of our students well as they prepare. exam logisticsIt has been a while since we've had a formal exam period. fishing club updateOn Friday,January 13th, the fishing club gathered for their first on-ice fishing experience of the winter. They went to the junction of the Morris River and Red River and fished for 2 hours. Apparently the fish were either too smart, or not very hungry, because the group only caught one Sauger. But, I guess that's why they call it FISHING, and not CATCHING. The electric ice auger that was generously donated by Nathan at Super Thrifty Pharmacy and Dan at Rat River Outdoors (St. Pierre) worked phenomenal! The students enjoyed their opportunity to use the auger as well. On Wednesday January 18th, the Fishing Club and Gr. 10 Outdoor Ed students were joined online by a special guest speaker. Brock, who works with Manitoba Wildlife and Fish Enhancement, discussed the following topics with the students: Stocking fish in certain lakes, tagging and studying fish species, enhancing fish spawning areas, managing beaver populations, depth-mapping lakes, etc. The students were very intrigued by how many hours it takes to fully map a small lake, and that there are 3 Arctic Char stocked lakes in Manitoba's Parkland region! Here are some pictures of the ice fishing evening and the guest speaker presentation, as well as a THANK YOU poster for our Fishing Club sponsors.
