class of 2023 celebrates this weekGrad 2023 is only a couple of sleeps away. Our Grade 12s who have earned the right to walk towards Mr. Watson and receive their high school diploma are gearing up for what will be an exciting day on Tuesday, June 27. It all starts with convocation at 1:30 pm in the Senior Years' Gym and then the grads head over for dinner, dancing, and Safe Grad the same evening to celebrate the goal they've been working towards for the last 13 years. We wish all the grads the very best as they head out to pursue their next chapter in life. Way to Go, MAV's! bump up day activityOn the morning of Thursday, June 29th, our K-8 students will participate in a "Bump Up Day" activity from 10:30 - 11:30 am. The Bump Up Day is a chance for all the students to get together with their teacher and their classmates in the homeroom they will be joining in September. This will give all of our students an opportunity to get a sneak peak. Grade 8 students will have a brief introduction to High School during this time. Teachers will be sending emails home the day before (the 28th) to notify parents of their student's homeroom placement. All Kindergarten students will be in attendance on the 29th. In light of that, there will be no Kindergarten classes scheduled on June 28th. staffing updatesAlthough we've enjoyed a great deal of staff continuity over that last few years at Morris School, change is always in the wind. This year we did not escape that wind, so we would like to update our school community on some of the changes that have occured.
access classroom earns a grantThe ACCESS class is very pleased to have been chosen as 1 of 4 recipients of a $5000 grant from the Cheese4Change organization! Cheese4Change is a climate and nature-friendly food, youth program, supporting affordable, sustainable and healthy choices amongst Canada’s youth. The ACCESS class submitted their "Creamy Harvest Soup" recipe, using home grown ingredients from their Three Sisters garden along with a video application and were very excited to find out they were winners in the Canada wide contest. Superintendent, Brad Curtis, visited Morris School to present the cheque that will be used to expand their gardening program with a greenhouse and second composter, and support the sustainability of the Breakfast Club program with a new dishwasher. The recipe for Creamy Harvest Soup... jashyn visits government house!Grade 12 student, Emilie Jashyn, joined a number of nominees at Government House this past Friday. Emilie was an official nominee for the MHSAA Scholar Athlete of the Year award. Emilie met our current Lieutenant Governor, Anita Neville as well as the other award nominees. We congratulate Emilie for earning this honour and wish her all the best as she embarks on a life after high school. field day a hit for our k-4 students! Our Early Years students had a great Field Day on Friday. Students, kindergarten to grade 4, competed in 10 different events. Five of the events being track and field events we had been working on in Phys. Ed. class and the other 5 events being team co-operative stations. There was also a tug-of-war event, which may have been the highlight of the day! All of our students participated very well and most importantly they all had FUN! A huge thank you to the Grade 5/6 and some students from Grades 7/8 classes who helped set up and lead our young students around for the day. It was good to see what great role models the 5/6’s were to the younger kids. We definitely could not have done it without the 5/6 students. Also, thank you to all the teachers and EA’s who helped with the day! A special thanks to Ms. Thiessen and who organized the canteen and all the EA’s who worked the canteen during the day! One last shout out to Pat and the Big Way staff for helping with the pizza lunch. With the canteen and pizza lunch, we were able to fundraise some money to make next year's Field Day even better!!! A big thank you to Mr. Ricard for his work to set this up and make it great experience for students and staff alike! report cards this weekReport cards will be out the last week of June. We will again be emailing report cards home to parents. If you require a paper copy, please let the office know. Paper copies will be sent home with students or mailed home. end of year remindersA reminder that laptops AND chargers must be handed into the office by June 29th. Another reminder that high school lockers need to be cleaned out and locks returned to the office. k-6 families...missing any clothing items? If you are missing any clothing items, they may be sitting in the hallway in the Early Years' end of the school. grade 5/6m use minute to win it as a math tool! This past week, Mr. Moore's 5/6 class played some Minute-to-Win-it for math. They recorded and graphed their results. Fun had by all! grade 5/6P have an egg-citing experienceMr. Petty's Grade 5/6 class took their knowledge of science to another level. The class participated in the time honoured Egg Drop project. This projects teaches students about how to protect an egg from cracking by understanding Newton's laws of motion, potential, and kinetic energy. The students worked in groups and designed, evaluated, tested and suggested improvements for a container that woud protect their precious cargo. Thanks to Mr. Dyck and Mr. Klassen, the students had their eggs dropped off the highest part of Morris School; the roof of the Senior Years' gym. The result were extremely successful in this engaging activity. Props to all students for applying their knowledge to this project!
