THANK YOU, CLASS OF 2019Our graduating class of 2019 held their commencement ceremony on Friday. It was a great day to celebrate the achievements of our students. Congratulations to all for making it this far. We also celebrated the "what will be" for our graduates as they work towards their next goals. The graduating class included (Awards presented are in parentheses):
Thank you to the students in the graduating class, the parent committees, and the many staff and community members involved who made the day a special one. Special thanks to the Staff at the Morris Multiplex for their work in changing our commencement space to a prom space in such an efficient manner. Grad Cont'd - our apologies for the oversightDuring our convocation, we missed announcing a scholarship received by one of our deserving students. Ms. Grace Friesen was the recipient of Red River Exhibition Foundation and the Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame Award and Scholarship. The award was presented to Grace earlier in the school year, but it is customary for us to recognize these type of awards during convocation. We apologize to Grace and her family for the oversight. Congratulations on your award, Grace. You are a great representative of our school. K-8 Classes for the 2019-20 School Year DecidedThe grade relevant teachers, guidance counselor, resource teachers, and administration have met to determine the class make up for our Grades Kindergarten through Grade 7/8 classes next year. We considered a number of factors to determine class makeup, including the parent requests for social considerations for their student(s). Those classes will come together for a "bump up" activity on Thursday, June 27. From 9:30 - 10:15 am, students will be directed towards their new class to meet their 2019-20 class and to take part in an activity with their teacher for the following year. In an attempt to allow our parents to assist with this transitional activity, your K-8 student(s) will receive a stapled note in their backpack indicating what class they will transition to during the next school year. We hope this preemptive note will allow parents to see what class their student(s) is(are) in and assist your child(ren) with easing them into their new class. The timeline for Thursday, June 27th is as follows: 8:45 - 9:25: Regular classes 9:30 - 10:15: Bump Up Day Activity 10:15 - 10:30: Recess 10:30 - 11:15: Regular classes 11:15 - 11:30: K-6 Assembly 11:30 - 12:25: Year end BBQ hosted by Morris School PAC (volunteers appreciated) 12:25 - 3:20: Regular school day Please call the school if you have any questions. LOST & Found is out. of. control!!All Lost & Found items have been placed just outside the main office at Morris School. It is our hope that all items will be reclaimed by the end of this week. If this is not the case, the excess items will be donated. Tim Hortons foundation teams with our 5/6'sMorris School has teamed with the Tim Hortons Foundation to provide our Grade 5/6's a great opportunity for leadership development during the next school year. We have applied and been accepted to be part of the Foundation's Community Leaders program for the 2019-20 school year. Our Grade 5/6's will travel to the Tim Hortons' Camp in the Whiteshell twice next year (September and April). In between the two visits, the Grade 5/6's will be responsible for planning and executing a low to no-cost community improvement initiative in Morris. The camp experience is designed to develop life and leadership skills which will provide the building blocks for youth engagement. We hope to build off the camp experience by working with our Grade 5/6's to become larger leaders within our K-6 sub-community within Morris School. The camp is a no cost camp for our students, so we are extremely grateful to the Red River Valley School Division for allowing us to attend, for the Tim Hortons Foundation for providing the opportunity, and for the greater community for donating to Camp Day earlier in the year. Your donations have allowed us to be a part of this tremendous learning opportunity. Maverick earns championshipWe continue to recognize those Mavericks who strive for excellence in activities that bring them life. That recognition continues today. Current Grade 5 student, Ethan F. earned a championship medal this past weekend in Flag Football. Ethan teamed up with some of his St. Vital Mustangs tackle football teammates to enter a team in the Football Manitoba Flag Football spring league. Down 13-0 in the first half, Ethan and his team came back to win the game 20-13. Ethan is the only 11 year old on the 12 year old team. Congratulations Ethan! Thank you from Mr. WAtsonI would like to take this opportunity to thank the Morris School Community for welcoming me to your school with open arms. The 2018-19 school year was a tremendous pleasure and learning experience. The amount of things I learned from all members of our community was extremely valuable. I appreciate the patience, understanding, and support I received from students, staff, parents, and community members over the last 10 months. My goal is to continue to learn and assist the our members of the community in reaching their academic goals. I look forward to continuing to learn along with our students as we work to strive for excellence in the things we do. I continue to be grateful to be a Morris Maverick! I would like to wish everyone a restful and peaceful summer. Take care, Mr. Watson Senior Years BusingA notice to Senior Years bus students...with Senior Years' exams underway, we would like to remind students that the buses should not be used to catch a ride into Morris, spend the day off campus, and then catch a ride home. If you ride the bus, you are expected to spend the day at school. Bus privileges will be suspended if this privilege is being abused. If parents have any questions, please call the school. Mav's continue to create change!Mavs Create Change had an ice cream sale in the K-6 section on Tuesday and raised $80 to go towards clean water in Haiti This year we have donated $400 towards the WE water pillar! We look forward to more community service and fundraising next year. Thank you to everyone in our school community who supported our initiatives. 2019 Grad TimelinesMiddle Years Divisional Track & Field MeetOur Grades 6-8 students traveled into Winnipeg this past week to participate in the RRVSD Middle Years Track & Field meet. We had a number of good showings and Morris School placed well as a team. We thank everyone who assisted with hosting the day and those community members who volunteered to help our students compete. K-6 Strong Beginnings for septemberStrong Beginnings is an assessment that occurs early in September for students in Kindergarten to Grade 8. On Friday, September 13 and Monday, September 16, 2019, all students will attend school by appointment for approximately 60 minutes to participate in assessment activities. The appointments on these days replace regular classes. This is an opportunity for teachers to extend and consolidate their understanding of each child in order to plan for instruction. This, in turn, will effectively address unique learning needs as early as possible in the new school year. The appointments will be booked using our Conference Manager software. This software is the same online tool we used this past year to book our parent-teacher interviews. I would ask all parents to book your Strong Beginnings appointments as soon as you learn your child(ren)'s teacher for the upcoming school year. This will occur on the day your student(s) receive their June report card. ALL students must book an appointment as this is a MANDATORY session. The online booking process will open on Friday, June 28 and close on Friday, September 6. Please call the school office if you have questions. Youth in Philanthropy updateOur Youth In Philanthropy group presented three grants to local organizations at the Morris and Area Foundation annual meeting this week. The group is proud to assist the Morris Museum, the Youth for Christ Centre, and Morris Minor Baseball. Thank you to our students and the Morris and Area Foundation for the opportunity. Mavericks hit the beach - the sequel! The Maverick Beach Volleyball club was in action again this past Friday at the Junior High Championships. Morris has 2 teams competing in the grade 9 division. Despite some unfortunate scheduling, putting both Morris teams in the same pool, they played through it and managed to finish 1st and 2nd in their pool and both advanced to the championship side. The team of Zach, Chloe, and Abby lost a close game in the first round of playoffs to end their day. Overall they were 2-2. The other Maverick team, consisting of Amy, Payton, and Andrew, continued their strong play(winning 5 straight games) and advanced to the semi-finals before being beat by a strong Selkirk team. The wind had picked up, and the Mavericks struggled to adjust to the conditions after switching sides. After a short break, and a little strategy meeting, the group went on to crush the competition in the 3rd place game 22-13. Special thanks to Mrs. Roberts for the coaching and encouragement she provided to our athletes this season. Mavericks throw around in WinnipegThree Maverick throwers participated in the 2019 MHSAA Provincial Track and Field Championships this week at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. Alexa B. competed in the shot put and javelin events. She placed 27th and 29th respectively. Christina N placed 14th in the shot put and the 18th in the discus. Manuel K. reached the top 10 in the province in both of his events by placing 8th in the shot put and 5th in the discuss. Congratulations to all three Mavericks for representing the Mavericks and Zone IV against all the top athletes in the province. Thank you to Mrs. K and all the coaches for assisting our track and field athletes this year. The track season is still going strong as the Grades 6-8 students compete at the Divisional meet on Wednesday. Good luck to all Mavericks! Boil water advisory LiftedAccording to the Town of Morris website, the Boil Water Advisory has been lifted. Morris School Band Concert - WednesdayAs we announced in last two weekly blogs, Mrs. Penno is retiring. So...we have a chance to honour Mrs. Penno, while allowing our alumni to have some fun at the same time. Wednesday, June 5th will be Mrs. Penno's final Morris School Band Concert. As per last week's blog post, Mrs. Penno is inviting any of her former students to join in the performance of the Mass Band song at the June 5 Spring Concert. Please contact her to receive your music. What a great way to send Mrs. Penno off into her new chapter of life by having too many alumni wanting to play...we love good problems! SafeArrival updateWe are four weeks into using our new Safe Arrival Attendance Program. We want to thank you for your patience during this process as we iron out some minor issues with the way the system works. Thank you to those who have taken the time to sign up for the App to excuse their children when necessary. This process saves us a lot of time in the office. A note to you as parents on the process...The system starts by teachers taking attendance at the beginning of class. That information is transferred to the Safe Arrival System, where the front office staff pulls the information from that attendance information and sends home the notifications. If your child is late for class, they will be marked absent, you will get a phone call. We have put a process in place where if a student is late, they must check into the office, get a late slip and bring it to the teacher. This is so we can account for the students that are in the building. The phone call will still go home until the child checks into the office, then they will be entered as late into the system, which means you will then get a notification that your child was late. If you have any questions or are having issues getting logged into the School Messenger App, please call (204-746-2612 ext. 3222 or email lkeck@rrvsd. K-2 head to the zoo!Our K-2's traveled into Winnipeg on Friday to take in the Assiniboine Park Zoo experience. For some of our students, the bus trip in was their first ride on a bus! They were able to spend a full day enjoying all the animals on display, including the new Stingray exhibit. Another active learning experience for our young Mavericks! We would like to thank all of our K-2 teaching and support staff as well as the parent volunteers who made this trip possible. Grade 1/2's developing positive relationshipsThis week our Grade 1/2 classes took a walk to visit our local RCMP detachment. The students learned a great deal about the role of the RCMP and got to meet two constables from the detachment who help to serve our community. The Grade 1/2 classes would like to thank Constable Kuz and Constable Dahl for giving us a tour of the RCMP Morris Detachment. Our Mavericks had a great time and learned a lot. Our PAC is at it again...K-6 hot lunch this week!Grade 3/4's Plant & Soil UnitThe Grade 3/4’s took part in the next step of their Plants and Soil Science unit. The active learning project was started just after spring break. The weather has finally cooperated and the students were able to plant their “creations” outside. Now the Life Skills Class will team with the 3/4’s to bring the plants through to harvest. Grad 2019 Information Meeting - June 6Canadian History comes alive! The Grade 11 Canadian History class followed former Morris Maverick Sabrina Janke on a tour of the Historic Exchange District in Winnipeg. The events and people of the Winnipeg General Strike were brought to life for us through Sabrina’s storytelling and Winnipeg’s historic buildings. Thanks, Sabrina! The tour took the class through the Historic Exchange District, visiting locations such as Old Market Square, Ashdown Hardware and Pantages Playhouse. We heard about significant people involved in the Winnipeg General Strike, including Helen Armstrong, JS Woodsworth, and AJ Andrews. Mavericks run, jump, and throw! Our Maverick Track & Field team competed at the Zone IV championship meet yesterday in Winkler. It was a great day to be outside and the conditions agreed with our Mavericks. Congratulations to Manuel (1st discuss; 2nd shot put), Alexa (1st shot put; 3rd javelin) and Christina (1st discuss; 2nd shot put) for qualifying for the MHSAA Provincial Track & Field this upcoming week in Winnipeg. Way to go, MAV’s! Morris School Golf clubThe Morris School Golf Club had a great time in May! The club met on Mondays and Thursdays in May starting on May 6th.
