The students decided to try and see if they could meet the mysterious trickster so they created some Leprechaun traps (no Leprechauns were hurt in the process). Unfortunately he got away, but he did leave some of his treasure behind for their great efforts. Mr. Moore's Grade 5/6 class created some tongue twisters for an ELA assignment. Tongue twisters are a fun way to work on one or two sounds at a time to get the pronunciation just right. The following alliterations were the result of this assignment! Way to Go, MAV's! 5/6 Alliterative Tongue-Twisters A cult of killer kangaroos kidnapped a koala. (Emah, Landon) Nate knew the new knight. (Kashlynn, Charley) King Nebuchadnezzar never knew Nebuchadnezzar’s nephew Norman. (Bo, Taylor) Gumbo grabs gum from his gummy gape. (Rocky, Tyson) I got three free flowers from Fly. The canteen was stocked with fresh popcorn, cans of pop, juice boxes, bags of chips and candy bags to satisfy salty and sweet cravings. Students stretched out on the floor or sat in seats to comfortably enjoy the film. Thank you to the Student Leadership team for a well-organized event, to Mrs. Zimmerman for allowing us the use of the band room, and to the students who attended and made it a memorable experience. We’ll see you at the next Movie Night! going beyond the textbook - Part IIIn Mrs. Clayton's Canadian History class, they don't just sit around reading from a textbook! The put their learning into action! To wrap up our study of the First Peoples and their traditions and cultures, we celebrated by making bannock. Bannock is a form of unleavened bread made from flour, lard/fat, salt, water, and sometimes baking powder (other variations use milk). Some students in class talked about how recipes were handed down from their grandparents and the ingredients they use. It was enlightening and wonderful to watch everyone working together! It is believed that Scottish fur traders introduced bannock to Indigenous groups. However, it is now understood that some form of bannock was made and consumed by Indigenous communities well before European colonization. The introduction of flour and modern cooking tools transformed bannock into what we know and eat today: a quick and simple carbohydrate-rich food. The History students ended class by enjoying their bannock with butter, jam and a cup of tea. A big thank you to Mrs. Leflar and her class for trading rooms, allowing us to use the kitchens! grade 7/8 Stevenson - meet the scientist! The 7/8S science class recently did their "Meet the Scientist" presentations. Each student adopted the persona of a scientist - past or present - and talked about their life, work, and accomplishments to the class. Some of the notable scientists featured included: Albert Einstein, Chieng Sin Wu, Varisa Pongrakhananon, Ada Lovelace, Alan Turing, Neil De Grasse Tyson, and more! We learned all about research in the fields of cosmology, physics, quantum physics, black holes, relativity, cancer research, and space travel. Did you know: Bill Nye was a stand-up Comedian? Albert Einstein failed high school math? Stephen Hawking lived several decades longer than the doctors told him he would? Galileo lived for years under house arrest because he wouldn't say the world was flat? Here are a few photos of some of our presenters... town bus ends today! With the change of the season comes the end of our Town Bus. We’ve started to explore the geography, environments and world issues that go along with the Earth’s largest and most populous continent. The younger kids enjoyed watching us during recess and were very encouraging. We stuck to our theme and carved pandas, tigers and elephants. A Taste of the Philippines We were the luckiest class in the school on St. Patrick’s Day when Mrs. Rhoda Bagay-Labauza and her husband prepared a delicious Filipino feast for us to enjoy. We look forward to meeting our new Mavericks and their families soon! 2022-23 elective selection process Grades 8-11It's that time of year for our students in Grades 8-11 (next year's Grades 9-12) to select their elective courses for the 2022-23 school year. Mrs. Edel is working through her presentation tour for students. The school requires each student who is planning to return to Morris School next year to complete a worksheet/selection sheet and then completing an online form to confirm your selections. This process is one of the most important tasks where the students are involved in our planning process for staffing next year. Senior Years' staffing assignments are based on student numbers in each elective and mandatory courses. This process needs to be taken seriously as it will have repercussions on what courses we offer as a school as well as the teaching assignment for our teachers. We want to minimize the number of students who select an elective in the spring of 2022 and then drop their selection in the fall or in February of 2023. Grades 6 & 7 students will also be selecting their elective courses for next year as well. Watch out for blog posts in April to detail that process. Mav's curling sweep and shoot their way to 3rdAfter finishing a perfect 5-0 at the Zone IV Curling Championships held here in Morris back on February 12th and 13th, your Maverick boys curling team earned the right to represent Zone IV and Morris School this past weekend at the MHSAA Curling Provincial Championships in Hamiota, MB. 15 teams from A, AA, AAA, and AAAA schools from across Manitoba competed for the MHSAA Provincial Championship banner. Before the bonspiel even began the boys faced some adversity as they learned they would be without lead Andrew Penner for the weekend due to illness. Zach, Avery and Ethan knew it would be a battle without Andrew, but were ready for the challenge. The boys started their quest for the Provincial Championship with a game against the hometown Hamiota Huskies at 9:00 am Thursday morning. The boys came out firing, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first end and didn’t look back cruising to an 11-3 win. The next game for the boys was against the St. Paul’s Crusaders at 2:30 pm. This game started off a bit shaky with the boys giving up a steal of 1 in the 1st end. They quickly bounced back with a deuce to take a 2-1 lead and followed that up with a steal of their own to take 3-1 lead after 4 ends. The Crusaders got 1 back in the 4th to make it 3-2 Mavericks at the 4th end break. Zach made a nice draw on his last rock of the 5th to make it 4-2. The Crusaders would not go away though getting a deuce of their own in the 6th to tie the game 4-4. Your Mavericks then responded with a big 4 in the 7th end and then ran the Crusaders out of rocks in the 8th to take the game 8-4. In the A-side semi-final game the Mavericks faced the Virden Bears. The boys went down 3-0 early in this game, but bounced back to tie the game at 3-3 by the 5th end. Unfortunately, the Bears were able to grab a 3 ender in the 6th end to take a 6-3 lead into the 7th. Playing their 3rd game of the day with only 3 players seemed to catch up with the boys in the 7th end as they ran out of gas trying desperately to get back in the game, but gave up a steal of 2 to end the game with an 8-3 loss. After the day off on Friday, the boys were back on the ice Saturday morning at 9:00 am to try and win their way back into the A-side - B-side final. It would take 4 wins to get there, but the boys were positive and ready to take on whoever they needed to in order to get into that final game. The first game of the day was against those same St. Paul’s Crusaders they had defeated on Thursday afternoon. The game started with 2 blank ends and then your Mavericks scored a big 3 ender in the 3rd end to take a 3-0 lead. The 4th end was a blank and then the Crusaders got on the board with a single to make it 3-1 after 5 ends. The Crusaders made it close with a steal of 1 in the 6th, but the Mavericks bounced back with a dagger 4 ender to win the game 7-2. In the B-side semi-final the boys took on the Gimli Lakers. The game started well for the boys and they got on the scoreboard first with a deuce in the 1st end. The 2nd end was a blank and the Mavericks stole 1 point in the 3rd and the fourth end to take a 4-0 lead into the 4th end break. Gimli however, would not go away and scored a big 3 ender to get within 1 of the Mavericks. The boys fought back in the 6th to get a deuce and take a 3 point lead into the 7th end. Gimli was able to get a single in the 7th end to pull within 2 playing the 8th end. Unfortunately, not much went the boys' way in the 8th end and Gimli scored 3 to take the game 7-6 and end the Mavericks run at Provincials. The Lakers went on to win the Provincial Championship leaving the boys with a 3rd place finish. The boys should be very proud of their performance at the Provincials. They curled extremely well and were excellent ambassadors for Zone IV and Morris School. Congratulations to the boys on an awesome curling season. You guys “rock”! intramural basketball updateThe 3 on 3 basketball tourney is in full swing. Tons of big shots, steals, big blocks, and buzzer beaters. Some of the women chosen were: Brigette Lacquette, Helen Keller, Billie Jean King, Katherine Johnson, Rosa Parks, Manon Rheamue and many more. Specifically, what to include in a survival kit, and how to efficiently and safely start a fire in nature. The first fire challenge was initiated by the boys in class, who challenged the group of girls to see who could get a fire started first. The girls quickly got their group fire started, while the boys attempt went 'up in smoke!' The next challenge was for each individual student to start their own fire and get it burning hot enough to boil a pot of water. Here are some action pictures of the fires and student survival kits! fishing club continues to meetThe Mavericks Fishing Club has met every Wednesday (unless there is a snow-day) since mid-December.
