Morris school's scare hunger food drivePlease consider assisting your child in supporting The Mav's Create Change Food Drive. physical computing club up & Running!A new club has started at Morris School. Coach Conway, a member of the Morris community has volunteered to be the lead of our school's physical computing club. The club is for students from Grades 5-12 who are interested in "playing with computers." Playing with computers will mean taking a working donated computer apart, putting it back together, wiping out the operating system, installing a new operating system, and networking the computers. The students will also look at creating their own computer from scratch. We have had over 35 students show up for the first two meetings and have a problem...a great problem! We almost have too many students to work on the four donated computers we have in our inventory. That's where our Morris School Community could assist. DO YOU HAVE A WORKING COMPUTER that you don't use any longer? If that is the case, our physical computing club would love to take it off your hands. Contact Mr. Watson if you would like to donate a computer. morris varsity boys' volleyball win in arborgCongratulations to the Varsity Boys Volleyball team for their tournament win in Arborg this past weekend. maverick varsity girls volleyball in killarneyThe Maverick Ladies volleyball team participated in their toughest tournament so far this season, with 6 of the 10 provincially ranked AA teams present. Morris finished the round robin with a 9-1 record, good enough for first in their pool. After defeating Garden Valley in straight sets in their first playoff game, the road to the finals was blocked by the 2nd ranked Boissevain team. After some great back and forth volleyball, the Mavericks won the second set to force a third. Unfortunately for our ladies, it didn't go our way, so off to the third place game we went. Having already beaten 6th ranked Killarney, and 7th ranked Souris, the Mavs now faced 8th ranked Gab Roy. Morris jumped out to a huge lead in the first set, and looked on track to defend their 5th place ranking. But credit to Gab Roy who never gave up, and never backed down. The more experienced squad slowly chipped away at the Morris lead, and eventually squeaked out a 26-24 upset win. The second set was a battle from start to finish, with neither team getting more than a 3 point lead. In the final rallies of the game, Gab managed to find the back corners with a couple of hard hits to pull ahead just in time to clinch a 25-23 victory, forcing Morris to settle for 4th place. This was not quite as embarrassing of a defeat as the girls received from Mr. Stevenson at bowling Friday night. Volleyball is definitely your sport ladies... :) The Mavericks are on the road this week, but you can cheer them on Oct 29 and 31 as they take on RVS and Shevchenko in Morris. Both games are double headers with the boys at 5:30pm followed by the girls. maverick hockey hosts annual tournamentOur Maverick Hockey team hosted their annual Dylan Berard Memorial Tournament this past weekend. The six team tournament started with pool play and finished with a playoff bracket. The Mavericks split their two pool games with a win over St. Paul's and a loss to the Lord Selkirk Royals. The Mavericks pool play landed them in a semifinal game against the Dakota Lancers. The Mavericks earned a 5-3 win over the Lancers and set up a rematch vs the Royals in the Championship final. A back to back Dylan Berard Memorial Tournament title was not meant to be this weekend as the Mavericks lost a hard fought 4-3 battle to the Royals. Thank you to all the volunteers for their work in hosting a successful event. The tournament could not have happened without your work and support. The Mavericks are back on the ice this Friday in Morris against the GVC Zodiacs. The puck drops at 7:30 at the Multiplex. Come on out and cheer on the Mav's! AFM blog entry: E-Cigarettes and Vape Pen useAddictions Foundation of Manitoba (AFM) In partnership with Red River Valley School Division Writer: Mehgan Smith, AFM counsellor Contact: [email protected] or 204-746-2612 Ext. 3293 AFM established the Knowledge Exchange Centre as a hub for information sharing on leading-edge, evidence-informed practices in addictions programming and research for the addictions field in Manitoba. Our mission based on a foundation of excellence providing addictions services and supporting healthy behaviours. Let’s get informed with the facts! Topic: E-cigarettes and Vape Pen Use What are the risks? (Reference - www.med.stanford.edu/tobaccopreventiontoolkit/E-Cigs.html )
(Reference - www.mb.lung.ca) WHAT IS VAPING? The devices are often called an e-cigarette, vape, mod, tank system or e-hookah. Vape devices heat a liquid called juice, but some use a wax, salts or herbs, which form a vapour when heated. The vapour is inhaled and exhaled. IS VAPING SAFE? Let’s be clear. Vaping is less harmful than smoking but it is still not harmless. Most e-juice or e-liquid contains nicotine, which is highly addictive and can alter brain development in youth and adolescents. If you are not a smoker, DO NOT start vaping! Vaping can increase your exposure to some harmful chemicals that could negatively affect your health. If you are a smoker, quitting smoking is the best thing you can do for your health. Completely replacing cigarette smoking with a vaping product will reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals. Vaping is a less harmful option, but the long-term effects of vaping are unknown because it hasn’t been around long enough to know all the impacts yet. Scientists are still studying and assessing the impact. Injuries from vaping products that have malfunctioned, including explosions and fires, have occurred. It is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and battery safety guidelines. IS SECOND-HAND VAPOUR HARMFUL? There is a potential to cause an asthma attack, or bronchitis flare up in bystanders who have these health issues. Never vape around children. In Manitoba, it is illegal to vape anywhere that smoking isn’t allowed. IS VAPING ADDICTIVE? If the vape juice has nicotine in it, then vaping can be addictive. CAN VAPING HELP ME QUIT SMOKING TOBACCO? If you have tried to quit using the nicotine patch, gum or other nicotine replacements, tried counselling or a medication to help you stop but have been unsuccessful then, switching from cigarettes to vaping is worth a try. Some people have success quitting smoking by switching to a vape. It has a higher success rate if you have counselling at the same time. CAN I BUY VAPING PRODUCTS LEGALLY? Yes, if you are 18 or older (like tobacco products.) The new date is set for Monday, October 21. Reminders will be sent via social media and next weekend's blog post. We hope to place reminders into our K-6 student's backpacks as well. Please contact the office if you have any questions. Free parent workshopMorris School Food drive begins this week!Students within our school community have the opportunity to look outside themselves and assist those in need. A couple of our student led groups are organizing a food drive to support our local food bank. We thank, in advance, those who elect to support our students' endeavours. Leflar earns MHSAA Athlete of the Week! The Rural High School Athlete of the Week is Payton Leflar of the Morris Mavericks volleyball team. This setter/right side led her team to victory at the Maverick's home tournament and a third place finish at the Deloraine tournament. Coach Scott Stevenson states, "Payton already understands the game better than most, and outworks the competition on a daily basis. She is a natural leader on the court and excels at both setter and right side. Her consistent play is invaluable to the team. At the start of a game, or game point, she is able to consistently perform under pressure. She’s been an integral part of her team’s success this year." This Grade 10 student maintains a 92% academic average, while also participating in badminton. Congratulations Payton as you join Cara Klippenstein as the other Maverick earning MHSAA Student-Athlete of the week so far this year! A call to the community! Grade 5/6 needs help! Our Grade 5/6 classes recently experienced the first portion of the Community Leaders Program at the Tim Hortons Camp in the Whiteshell Provincial Park. During the three days, our Grade 5/6's were tasked with coming up with a project that would improve our community. The group has come back with the idea to improve the Morris School Community, specifically the playground. The improvements are meant to allow more students to be involved in low-organized, fun, & safe activities, allowing students to learn various skills like hand-eye coordination, agility, teamwork, and fair play. Here's the project... The Grade 5/6 Community Leaders program would like to construct a Gaga Ball pit as well as four square and hopscotch courts. According to Gagacenter.com, Gaga is a fast paced, high energy sport played in an octagonal pit. The more players the better! Dubbed a kinder gentler version of dodgeball, the game is played with a soft foam ball, and combines the skills of dodging, striking, running, and jumping, while trying to hit opponents with a ball below the knees. Players need to keep moving to avoid getting hit by the ball. Fun and easy, everyone gets a serious workout. Easily addictive, people can't wait to get back in the pit. The games move quickly...after a few short minutes, the action heats up with a second ball, sure to get even the best players out within minutes. Once the game ends, everyone is back in for the next round. Where can you help...? To build the eight sided Gaga ball pit, we will need some materials and some skilled labour. As you will see in the pictures below, we want to build a sturdy pit that will hold up in our weather and with the use it will receive over the school year(s). If you would like to donate your time, talents, or treasures, our Community Leaders group would greatly appreciate it. Interested parties can contact Mr. Watson directly at the school or email him at [email protected]. Our Community Leaders are looking to complete the project before they return to Camp in April. We hope to have shovels in the ground before the it freezes for the winter season. Picture Day is finally here!!A reminder of our school photos this week (Friday, October 11). Students will receive the postcard below on Monday or Tuesday of this week. We have a bit of conflict with our Grades 3-8 Divisional Cross Country meet, but we will ensure all student-athletes and their classes will have their photos taken prior to competing for our school. Once the photo day has concluded, you can view and order school photos by accessing mylifetouch.ca using your Portrait ID and Access Code which can be found on your Picture Day order form. free Parent workshop - november 5Orange Shirt Day activities wind upMavs Create Change was helping to promote Orange Shirt Day in Morris School. They prepared little orange hearts and shirts for each student in the school to convey a message to the former students of Residential Schools. They also created and put up posters around the school encouraging their fellow students to wear orange on September 30. K-6 classes commemorated Orange Shirt Day with various activities tied with their studies. Morris School hosted speaker and knowledge-keeper Mr. Lionel Mason on Friday, September 27 to read to the K-6 students and speak to the Grades 7-12 students. The topics Mr. Mason covered were Residential Schools as well as his own experiences growing up on a First Nation, and then leaving for school. The students were very interested in what he had to say and several students connected with him after his various presentations. Mr. Mason has worked in several schools around the province, including as an EA in Morris. Terry Fox Run a successIn spite of the wet conditions, Morris School's Terry Fox run was a great success. The conditions did not dampen the enthusiasm of our K-6 students, the volunteers, or the parents and community members who showed up to support the event. The Terry Fox run is an annual, non-competitive charity event held throughout our country in commemoration of Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope. The goal is also to raise fund for cancer research. We congratulate all of our students for their enthusiast support as well as our K-6 teachers for organizing the event. Special thanks to Mrs. Johnston, Mrs. Edel, and Ms. Martens for their work in putting this all together. It takes a great deal of work and we appreciate providing our students with the opportunity to learn about Terry Fox as well as encouraging them to think outside of themselves and come together to support a good cause.
