One of our Grade 11 students, Martine Munford, created a timely infographic to fulfill the requirements of her unit project. Way to go, Martine! community thank you to our Gr 7/8 shovel crewWe received a nice shout out this week from a member of our community! Our shovelers were out again keeping the neighbourhood driveways clear of snow and people are grateful. Way to go, MAV's! Access class updateThis week we have continued our exploration into the lives of early Canadians. Mr. Lehmann kindly showed us how to use a handsaw and build an A-frame shelter. We worked up a sweat shovelling snow for a quinzee. He taught us how to measure the thickness of the snow with sticks and how to decide where to dig the hole for the door. It was pretty cozy in there when it was all done. We had some fun discovering our Voyageur names, learned some French and Cree and tried out our weaving skills making some miniature Metis sashes. It was difficult at first but fun once we got the hang of it. We also painted a giant HBC blanket bulletin board and cooked ‘’ 3 Sisters Soup’’ based on an Indigenous recipe with corn, squash and beans. It was surprisingly delicious, even to our most picky classmates. Mr. Moore's 5/6's go sledding!February brings the return of I Love to Read Month. Stay tuned to your respective teachers' SeeSaw accounts and blogs for the class initiatives. I know Mrs. Dekezel is looking forward to this month from the library perspective as well. We encourage each family to find a way to commemorate the month in style! Feel free to share you plans, we'd love to highlight them in the blog or on Maverick Media morning announcements. Mavericks going to courT!This upcoming Monday/Wed/Friday, the Grade 12 Law class is engaging in Mock Trials in the classroom. Students will play the role of lawyers, witnesses, court clerks and jurors to get an idea of what it's like to be part of a real trial. Stay tuned for some courtroom pictures and the results of the trials! Good luck to all involved! Grade 7/8 Phys Ed serving the communityMr. Lehmann's Grade 7/8 Phys. Ed. class was out serving the community this week AND getting in some good exercise! If you live in & around the school and you are interested in having your driveway cleared, simply leave a shovel out on your property and the students will get it done!! Way to go, MAV's!! Outdoor adventures with the access class!!Mrs. Noel has been guiding our class back through time during our Winter Survival unit. We’re combining Canadian history, ELA, Art and Home Ec. to make things interesting. Our studies have exposed us to the lives of Canada’s First Nations, early explorers, voyageurs and settlers. We enjoy the movies and projects and have had the thrill of combining those with tastes and touches of the past. We nibbled cautiously at the pemmican made of very smoky bacon fat, bison and cranberries. We decided it tasted like dog food but if it was all you had for months on end while you traveled through the bush, you could probably eat it. We also made two different bannock recipes and both were delicious! After re-creating the HBC Coat of Arms and some Metis inspired art we took on the challenge of ice-fishing. We bundled up for the cold windy day and met Mr. Mike Deeley at the river. He graciously drilled 4 holes through the ice and lent us some fishing rods to use. He assured those of us who were nervous that the ice was twenty-two inches thick. Unexpected challenges arose such as outdoor bathrooming and a vehicle that wouldn’t make it back up the river bank after it was suggested we park on the ice to block the wind. Many wonderful people stopped to offer assistance and we’d like to thank Jordan Berezowski, Troy McDougall, Alisha Stroud and her dad as well as the other kind strangers who stopped to help. Eventually we walked back to school and called CAA. We learned a lot and would love to go again. Maybe next time we’ll even catch a fish! Now we are waiting for more snow and looking forward to new projects and adventures including shelter building , fire making (and safety), outdoor first aid, snow sculptures ,tourtière, a visit from a local dog sledder, sash weaving, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. Stay tuned! By Kylie and Alexis calling for the Maverick class of 2034Our school is looking forward to receiving registrations for next year's Kindergarten class! Our school is working on a COVID-19 friendly open house. Please stay tuned for more information. In the meantime, families are welcome to access the Kindergarten registration form by accessing the following link https://morris.rrvsd.ca/for_parents/registration_forms congratulations - Bryce Neustater!!Current Grade 12 student, Bryce Neustater is making plans!! Those plans include a post-secondary education and the continuation of his volleyball experience! As you will read below, Bryce has committed to the Canadian Mennonite University's Blazers Men's Volleyball Program for the 2021-22 school year. We are very excited for Bryce and wish him all the best! Here's a portion of the press release CMU released recently, highlighting their volleyball commits for next year. BRYCE NEUSTATER Neustater left his mark on the Morris boy's volleyball program after helping the Mavericks to their first zone championship in eight years in 2019. The accomplishment garnered the attention of the Manitoba High School Athletics Association as well as Neustater's southern Manitoba high school, who recognized the 6'1 left side as their Athlete of the Week. Neustater would captain his high school program for his Grade 10 and Grade 11 years, but like all high school players from across the province, Neustater lost his senior year to the Covid-19 pandemic. "Bryce is the consummate team player,' said Dulder. "He is the kind of guy that is first in the gym to set up the nets… eager to train and improve as a player. He is a good passer and can play left side or as a middle. He will bring the type of character to our team that I believe will build our team up and add to our already strong cohesion." As a club player, Neustater has spent most of his youth development years with the Junior Pilots program with a brief stop at the 17-u level with Winman Wild. Playing mostly as a middle, Neustater helped the Pilots to back to back silver medals at club provincials in 2018 and 2019. maverick media is ON. the. air!!Our morning announcements are now live-streamed every morning. Way to go, MAV's!! Artist in the school - off to a great start!Emily Granger has been in the school to start working on our three week adventure with Artist in the School sponsored by the Manitoba Arts Council. Each group will produce a spoken word piece about their views on covid (Grades K-2 are singing a song they know), and it will be transferred onto vinyl record. Emily will cut the records in class while they will create album artwork and liner notes to go along with the recording. At the end of the day each group will listen to their recording on a vintage record maker/player. Mrs. Roberge's class shared their experience with the following images. Creative students in concert BandWith the COVID-19 restrictions, Mrs. Zimmerman and her concert band student have had to become creative in Band. Mrs. Zimmerman created an assignment that asked the students to be creative within the concert band world! Students took the project and ran. Some created their own pieces, studied/played music throughout history, or created a TikTok video. Mr. Watson is too cheap to pay for the Weebly version that allows video, so here are some screenshots of their finished pieces. Check out our Instagram account for the videos over the coming week(s). Grade 11/12's will be the first to appear on Monday, January 18th followed by the Grade 9/10 students on Tuesday. While having students learn from home hasn't been ideal, we would like to commend our students and staff for their commitment to learning during these past two weeks. Our teachers have been impressed with our students' attendance and engagement levels during this time. We would ask all student who borrowed laptops or other hardware to return them to school on Monday morning. We look forward to seeing everyone next week! Gr. 5/6 Phys. Ed. complete strong person weekOur Grade 5/6 Phys. Ed. classes have just completed their Strong Person unit. Over the last week or so, the students have been testing their strength & endurance by completing a number of challenging tasks thrown at them by Mr. Lehmann. Today's final task was a car pull competition. Students were grouped together to pull Mr. Lehmann and his vehicle over a specific distance in the parking lot. The time competition was a great way to cap off the unit! Way to go, MAV's!! computer club in space!!Our Morris School Computer Club continues to seize new & exciting opportunities! This one involves the International Space Station (ISS)! Our club entered the European Astro Pi Challenge run in collaboration with the Raspberry Pi Foundation. The Challenge offered students and young people the amazing opportunity to conduct scientific investigations in space by writing computer programs that run on Raspberry Pi computers on board the International Space Station. The Mission Zero challenge offered participants up to 14 years of age the chance to have their code run on the ISS. Teams write a program to display a message and humidity reading on an Astro Pi computer, for the astronauts to see as they go about their daily tasks on the ISS. Congratulations to Seth C., Ryan D., Jax S, & Coach Sean Conway for their accomplishment! It is just OUT. OF. THIS. WORLD!! We appreciate the efforts of our students, parents, and teachers who are working to make this work. Our student attendance has been much better than last spring's experience. We appreciate your efforts and we look forward to seeing you on the 18th of January. Remote learning student attendance
congratulations computer club!!We won! Coach Conway, the Computer Club moderator, entered Morris School's Computer Club in a contest at an engineering site he frequents, for some Raspberry Pi equipment. After attending an online demonstration, participants could enter their name into a draw for the equipment. The Computer Club had to describe how the equipment would be used to further Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM). In one of the remote club sessions, Jax Sanders gave Coach Conway an idea for a networking project to do over the Internet. He submitted a brief description of our club and the project. It looks like the project made the winners circle. Our computer club continues to meet virtually on a regular basis. Way to go, MAV's!! If interested...please see Mr. Watson A shout out by an order of canada winnerAfter reporting Marcia Kran's Order of Canada honour, Mr. Lehmann took it upon himself to reach out to her to see if she would be willing to be a guest speaker in his Law class. With the help of Mrs. Dekezel and former Morris School teacher, Ruth Murray, Marcia joined class. Thank you to everyone who gave this experience to our students! Artist in the schoolMorris School is happy to welcome back the Artist in the School program again this year. We are planning to host a COVID-19 restriction-friendly program with Emily Granger. Each homeroom class will take part in a workshop as a class. Their full day will be spent working on the project from start to finish. This year's experience will focus around taking the spoken word piece around the topic of COVID-19. The final recordings will be transferred onto a vinyl record.
