We would encourage you to read the letter and familiarize yourself with the process for reporting absences to the school. Grade 5/6 Rocks!!Through the month of April, the 5/6 classes participated in a Learn to Curl program as part of their Phys. Ed. class. The program was held at the Morris Curling Club and organized by Mrs. Kurylko, Mr. Scott Stevenson, and Mrs. Charron. Chris and Lorne Hamblin and their team of volunteers taught students how to throw a curling rock, basic rules of the sport, and how to sweep. It was a great opportunity for students to try a new sport from first class instructors. On April 24th, the 5/6 classes participated in a Curling Funspiel at the curling club. Students played two end games in a semi-competitive format. This was great exposure to the sport and students really enjoyed working as a team. Good Job Mavs! Big thanks to the Morris Curling Club, their instructors, and all the organizers. MOrris School Golf clubMorris school golf club will be taking place Mondays and Thursdays in May starting on May 6th. Our mav's continue to create change!Mavs Create Change had a successful ice cream sale this past Tuesday. Our many Mav volunteers took orders from each class in the K-6 wing, filled those orders, and then delivered the ice cream. It was so successful that we ran out! The first flavour to go was vanilla, followed by neapolitan, and lastly chocolate. Mavs Create Change took in $101 from this fundraiser. This will go towards providing clean water to an impoverished village in a developing country. Mavs Create Change thanks all of the K-6 students and staff for their support! Mehgan's Musings...Addictions Foundation of Manitoba (AFM) Writer: Mehgan Smith, AFM counsellor for RRVSD AFM established the Knowledge Exchange Centre as a hub for information sharing on leading-edge, evidence-informed practices in addictions programming and research for the addictions field in Manitoba. Our mission based on a foundation of excellence providing addictions services and supporting healthy behaviours. Let’s get informed. Knowledge is power! Break the Stigma - What comes to mind when you hear the term “addict”? - “junkie”, “drunk”, “sad”, “pill popper. “Addict” older term, “Dependency” – new term. We often ask ourselves: “why don’t they just quit?” The Answer to this question is complex and unique to each person’s circumstances. When an individual becomes dependent, even if they want to stop, they may not be able to. Support and non-judgement are key! It is all too common to engage in snap judgements such as “people use drugs because they are weak or they abuse alcohol because they lack morals”. We judge them for the behavior that we see and we often don’t bother to find out what’s underneath it. This ever present stigma often leads people who battle substance abuse often feel ashamed and misunderstood. In our achievement focused, success driven society; dependency on drugs is seen as a sign of inadequacy. The biggest revelation in recent years is that we are beginning to understand the relationship between trauma and substance abuse. Dependency to drugs is primarily a consequence of adverse childhood experiences as well as lack of prevention and education. With this being said mental health and the field of addiction really goes hand in hand. Removing the Stigma –

Grades 1-8 class creation - parental inputAs a school team, we will begin the creation of class lists for the Grades 1-8 classes for the 2019-20 school year. COACH LEWIS NOMINATED FOR PROVINCIAL AWARDMr. Barry Lewis is too humble to let people know, so the Morris School Blog has to spread the word on his behalf. Mr. Lewis, head coach of the Provincial Champion Morris Maverick Hockey team, has been nominated for a 2019 Coaching Manitoba Impact Award. The Coaching Manitoba Impact Awards presented by Club Regent Casino & Event Centre recognize and celebrate the outstanding achievements and significant contributions coaches have made to their athletes and their sport through coaching. The award does not reflect the accomplishments and contributions of a coach in any one year, rather the awards are designed to acknowledge the contributions a coach has made to his/her sport and athletes over a number of years. Mr. Lewis will join all the other nominees from the Peter Dick School System Award as well as the other major categories on Saturday, April 13th. We wish him all the best and thank him for his contribution to our school community. Drop off and pick up reminderAs we head into the final few months of the school year, we continue to appreciate those families who have respected our request about not dropping off or picking up their students by stopping/parking in the small loop at the end of Toronto Avenue. We would ask everyone to stop prior to the east end of the school building and dropping off/picking up your students. This allows all vehicles to drive to the end of Toronto Avenue and using the loop to turn around and be on their way. parent teacher conferences - coming soon...Our first attempt to book parent-teacher conference appointments online received positive feedback from parents and staff.
