We want to thank all members of our Morris School community for their contributions for making our school a better place, for challenging us, for stretching us so we can grow, and for being supportive of us over the last four months. We look forward to seeing everyone on the 5th of January. winter break nears; celebrations continueStudent leadership group is awesome!This past week our Student Leadership Group took the initiative to organize a fun-filled week of activities with a Christmas theme. It was capped off with a lunch (more like a FEAST) for every Morris School student and staff. Students and staff stepped up to prepare, cook, and serve our community while "Santa" walked the halls. A special shoutout to the Access class who peeled over 150 pounds of potatoes this week and to Mone'e Darling for running a great kitchen, Mrs. Edel for recruiting some great volunteers, and Mr. Ian Zepik for his role as Mone'e and Mrs. Edel's right hand man on the day of the lunch. The other days included the start of the Candy Cane sales, two dress up days. We weren't able to execute the All School Bingo today due to the cancellations of classes. We look forward to spending our last three days celebrating the end of 2022 (school version). Be sure to bring a 'Tin for the Bin' this week. All food items will be donated to the Morris Food Bank. Grade 5/6 Diorama gallery walkMr. Moore's class held a gallery walk of their Diorama projects this past week. The class has been reading and studying the novel, Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell. Their Diorama projects depicted a scene from the novel. The students worked extremely hard on their projects and their pay-off was an opportunity to show their work to the visitors who popped by the MPR. Way to Go, MAV's! See you there! gr 12 bio students get hands on opportunityThe grade 12 biology class took a field trip to the Youth BioLAB at the Albrechtson Research Center which is a part of St. Boniface Hospital. They learned about DNA and some practical applications of genetic modifications with some hands-on activities. It was a great experience for everyone. Our alternative class stack & Pack for others!Students from our Alternative Classroom ventured out into the community to lend a helping hand to those who are planning to provide families in our community with a hand up over Christmas. Our students moved items, stacked items, and packed items. We are proud of their efforts and willingness to give back! The books are $35 per book. cooking up a storm in home ec!Grade 9 & 10 Home Ec started their foods portion of the Home Ec program. Friday they started out easy, making some cookies. Grade 9 made Chocolate Chip Cookies and Grade 10 made Double Chocolate cookies. Everyone came out alive, the cookies were enjoyable and the Home Ec Lab is still standing, so we will count Friday as very successful! mavericks host first basketball tournamentOur Varsity Boys hosted their home tournament this weekend. With a team dropping out our Junior Varsity team stepped in and also got their first game action. Both teams fought hard and showed some excellent progress throughout the weekend, with some players playing 4 - 5 games. The teams had victories over MCI and RVS and finished in 4th and 5th place. One-time top up to the Canada Housing Benefit: · CMHC stakeholder kit Additional information The Canada Dental Benefit provides eligible parents or guardians with a direct tax-free payment of up to $650 per year for two years to help cover dental expenses for children under 12. This benefit, which will support an estimated 500,000 children, is available to families without access to private dental insurance and with an adjusted family net income under $90,000. The CRA began receiving applications and processing payments for the benefit on December 1, 2022. The one-time top-up to the Canada Housing Benefit will provide a tax-free payment of $500 to an estimated 1.8 million lower-income renters who are struggling with the cost of housing. This top-up is available to applicants with an adjusted net income below $35,000 for families, or below $20,000 for single Canadians, who pay at least 30 per cent of their adjusted net income towards rent. The CRA will begin receiving applications and processing payments for the benefit starting December 12, 2022. Thank you - CWB Welding foundationThank you to the CWB Welding Foundation for supporting the Morris School welding program. This week they provided our program with 20 packages of welding safety gear. Each kit contained a welding helmet, a Flame Resistant welding jacket, welding gloves, ear plugs and a box of N95 respirators. Our students and our staff are grateful beyond belief! Music celebrations start this week!This is a reminder of the upcoming Winter Band Concert taking place in the Senior Gymnasium at Morris School on Tuesday, December 6th at 7:00pm. The students are excited and have been working hard to showcase the progress they have made so far this year! All grade 6-12 band students are performing in this concert and are expected to attend. The dress code for the students is all black (formal if possible) wear. Black pants/skirt, shirt, shoes, socks, etc. Students are asked to meet in uniform in the band room on Tuesday evening by 6:30pm to warm up. There will be a silver collection at the door in support of the 6-12 Band Program. Written and produced by the Grade 5 students, "Santa's Road Trip" will take place on Tuesday, December 20th at 6:30pm in the Senior Gymnasium, featuring all K-5 students! An "open dress rehearsal" will take place at 1:00pm that afternoon. Stay tuned for more details! poinsettia pick up is monday!For those who participated in the music poinsettia fundraiser, pick up will be on Monday, December 5 from 4:00-5:30 pm at the south theatre doors in the bus loop. Students/parents who sold poinsettias are responsible for picking up all of their orders for their buyers. Mrs. van der Linde has continued a tradition she began during COVID. She is nearing 4000 loaves baked and delivered with a smile and a hug! grade 1/2 celebrates fifty (50)!The Grade 1/2 classes celebrated the 50th school day of the year by dressing up in 1950s fashion and participating in some popular 1950s activities. They went bowling, had a sock hop, built with Lego, enjoyed root beer floats, and "attended" a drive-in movie. They also spent the week learning about the 1950s, as well as doing 50s themed math and literacy activities. Way to Go, MAV's! mavericks athletics reportBoys Basketball The boys have been practicing hard in preparation for their home tournament this coming weekend. See the schedule below for details on game times. The Boys practice on Mondays at 3:30 and Thursdays at 5:30 if any other boys from Grades 9-12 would like to attend. Girls Basketball Our High School Girls' practice on Tuesday's and Friday's at 3:30. All girls from Grades 9-12 are welcome to attend. Hockey This past week, the boys defeated Miller 2-1 and lost in another close game to Morden 4-3. They head to Brandon this weekend for the Victoria Inn High School Hockey Tournament. This upcoming week they travel to Winkler on Tuesday to play Garden Valley Collegiate and then to Carman on Wednesday to play the Cougars. Wrestling Our Maverick Wrestlers had a good week of practice. Our Mini Mav's (Grades 1-6) are having a great time during their respective lunch recess practices. Junior Mav's (Grades 1-6) are practicing hard after school and they are followed by our Senior MAV's (Grades 7-12). We are awaiting details of our first tournament on Saturday, December 10th in Niverville. Once that information has been received, we will get it out to all interested wrestlers. breakfast with santa and our concert band!Members of our Senior Band got in the festive spirit and played Christmas carols at the annual Breakfast with Santa event this Saturday at the Multiplex. The students all had a great time and did a wonderful job representing Morris School! Way to Go, MAVS! mr. moore's class enjoys their auctionMr. Moore's Grade 5/6 class held their monthly auction this week. As the students work through a month of classes, they earn "Moore Bucks" for the daily tasks they are assigned or lose Moore Bucks for those things they neglect to do. Each month they can put their money into action by bidding on a variety of items Mr. Moore puts up for auction. It is interesting to see how students use different strategies during this event.
