We have a few more dollars to raise. @sunvalley_coop is helping us out in a big way this upcoming Wednesday. On the 31st they’re here to help us with a BBQ. Friday was a hit!This past Friday, our school hosted a BBQ & Bake Sale to raise funds for some upcoming field trips. Our Grades 5/6 students worked with Mr. Ricard, Ms. Thiessen, and Mrs. Siemens to prepare food for the masses. Way to Go, MAVs! get in the spirit this week!take me out to the ball game!This past Thursday, the grade 3/4 classes took a trip to Shaw Park in Winnipeg to take in a Winnipeg Goldeyes baseball game. For the past two weeks in gym class, the students have been learning and practicing different baseball skills and learning the game of baseball. This was a great opportunity for the students to witness what a real professional baseball game looks like. It was a beautiful day at the ballpark and the kids were loudly cheering the entire game. After the game some students were even able to get a few autographs from some of the Goldeyes players. All in all it was a great trip and a ton of fun was had by everyone! grade war fun!Thanks to our Student Leadership Team, our Grades 9-12 students enjoyed the outdoor version of Grade Wars. This group practiced specific social skills including: making friends, conflict resolution, and recognizing healthy versus unhealthy friendships. Working in smaller groups facilitates a unique opportunity for students to form positive connections with their peers, and also to learn and practice specific psychoeducational skills in-depth water temps were rising this week!After a few trials and learning, Mr. Stevenson's Grade 7/8 students competed to see whose design could heat water to the highest temperature. Congratulations to all students for engaging in such an active learning process. mavericks athletics reportTrack The Mavs track and field team travelled to Stonewall on Tuesday May 23rd to compete in the Interlake Relay Meet. Athletes seemed more comfortable and confident at their second competition, and the results proved it: Some of the notable results were; Logan Mazinke finished 2nd overall in the varsity male pentathlon, Molly Sanders finished 4th in discus and 6th in javelin. Zach hamblin finished 2nd in the 1500 m race. On Wednesday May 25th, 9 of the track and field members visited University of Manitoba to practice alongside the university track and field team. Our athletes learned many new and valuable techniques from these higher level athletes and coaches. On Tuesday May 30 and Wednesday May 31, the track and field team is taking 31 athletes to the Zone 4 championships in Winkler. The goal is to repeat as Zone 4 AA champions, and advance as many of our athletes to provincials as possible! Provincials take place in Brandon Mb on June 8-10th. Good Luck Mavs! Rugby The JV Rugby 7s team defeated Kelvin and St. Paul's Maroon in their two games this past week. That brings the rugby team's record to 5 wins and 1 loss thus far. The boys play again this week against St. John's High School (5:05) and St. Paul's High School - White (6:05). In partnership with Agriculture in the Classroom -Manitoba, Nutrien’s Seed Survivor display visited our school. Seed Survivor is a free, curriculum-based learning experience that encourages children to understand what makes plants grow. The Agriculture on Wheels classroom provided students an opportunity to compete as virtual farmers, dig for real fossils (and learn how they relate to agriculture), and even plant a sunflower seed to take home and grow. This week, thanks to the generous support of many students, staff and community members during their plant sale, the ACCESS class surpassed their fundraising goals! In addition to covering the cost of an apple tree and their upcoming field trips to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and Lil’ Steps Wellness Farm, they were also able to purchase a rhubarb plant and some much needed equipment to support their gardening program. Special thanks to everyone who donated their time, money and plants to help them reach their goal! softball and softball the sequelOn Thursday, May 18th the 5/6's went to Lowe Farm for the annual softball tournament. They played hard and were troopers in the rain and cold weather. The following day a different group of students and a different weather pattern traveled to Lowe Farm. On Friday, May 19, a great day was had at the divisional softball tournament by all of our Grades 7/8 students. The boys went undefeated in round robin play before coming from behind to beat Lowe Farm in the final. The girls started the day off slow (while still having a great time) and came back from being down 7-0 to beat Rosenort in the Consolation Final. Students have been working on their homemade solar water heaters. The design that heats 500ml of water the most in one hour will win! Students can use common items available at school or home, but cannot use sources of energy other than the sun. This is a part of the Particle Theory of Matter: Heat Unit. Students have had two classes to test their designs and make changes based on their results. Outdoor Courts Project UpdatesThe Outdoor Courts Project Committee and the community that supports them have been busy. This week we were told by Tim Horton's that we raised a total of $24,405.03. This total ranked third in the province for total sales. We are beyond appreciative of the support shown for the project, the Morris Food Bank, YFC, and Cancer Care in the form of cookie donations. We are getting closer and closer to our project fundraising goal. We will keep working until that final number has been reached. Track Our Maverick Track and Field Team begins their quest to defend their Zone banner as they head to Selkirk for the Royal Rumble on Tuesday, May 16. Grades 5-8 The gr 5/6's will head to Lowe Farm on Thursday to participate in the divisional softball tournament while the 7/8's will compete the following day. Don't forget to bring in your permission slips! grade 7/8l discover volcanoesMrs. Lucier’s class has been studying Volcanoes and Mountains as part of our Earth Crust Science unit. We have been learning about the different kinds of volcanoes and how they erupt. So on Wednesday we made our way outside, on a beautiful day, to complete an experiment on how Volcanoes erupt! Using pop bottles, and filling them with a vinegar/soap mixture, we then added a baking soda/water slurry and our volcanoes erupted! Some students made their own modifications to the experiment, mixing the solutions more to create more bubbles, or leaving them stagnant before the slurry was added. We discovered more bubbles makes more of an eruption! A heartfelt apology to all the parents who now have vinegar and baking soda all over their houses!! It was a beautiful sunny day for learning about polar bears and many other animals while sharing the experience with friends. The entire school headed out, took an area of the town, nd did their best to beautify the town by collecting garbage. A lot of garbage was cleaned up and the community looks great! Way to Go, MAV's! central honour band experienceLast Friday and Saturday, ten Morris School band students were selected to participate in the Central Region Honour Band hosted at Carman Collegiate. Erin Hamblin and Cody Dueck represented Morris in the Junior Honour Band, and Emilie Jashyn, Whaine Villanueva, Danya Edel, Mikayla Wiebe, Ryan Dueck, Ginger Jorgenson, Bethany Wiebe, and Katie McLachlan were in the Senior Honour Band. These students spent two full days working with over 160 other high achieving musicians across the region, and put on a very impressive concert under the direction of two sought after music educators, Alexis Silver and Graydon Cramer. The students met new friends, grew as musicians, and made some beautiful music together. Grade 11 Canadian History podcast projectThe Grade 11 Canadian History class this semester created a podcast series that celebrates the unique events, people and inventions that exemplify what it means to be Canadian. Each episode is student-driven and focuses on a topic that they believe is the most important in Canadian history. Miigwech! grade 5/6s honour red dress dayMrs. Siemens honoured Red Dress Day on Friday by conducting a lesson on changing the language we use around not only women but everyone. For example, instead of describing people as pretty or handsome, students use words like strong and confident. Mrs. Siemens asked her students to write some of the words they came up with on the dresses. The class hung the dresses up on display on the fence in the outdoor class off Hwy 23. They learned about different materials that were strong, flexible, waterproof and absorbent through experiments and building activities. After they had gathered the information required, they planned and created a house for an animal that would withstand the big bad wolf trying to blow it down.
