a historic seasonThe Mavericks Rugby inaugural season has come to an end, and what a season it has been. The students involved had never played rugby before and didn’t know what to expect going into their first game: which they won. And then won again. Suddenly, they became a rugby team that was not only trying rugby, but succeeding at it. The team went on to finish the regular season 6-1-1, finish in 2nd place. They then won their semi-final game and, after a gruelling match that included a comeback and overtime, lost in the final match against an experienced St. Paul’s team. While disappointed they didn’t win the championship, they made a brand new program look amazing with their work ethic, attitude, and results, and laid the groundwork for this program to continue growing next year. Home Ec - Grades 7-12 Art - Grades 7-12 Hockey Academy - Grades 5-12 Band June is indigenous History MonthJune is Indigenous History Month, and this week divisional Knowledge Keeper, Cookem Daisey, visited our school to share Indigenous history and gardening know-how with the ACCESS Program and Mr. Stevenson’s 7/8 class. Cookem Daisey explained the four sacred medicines (cedar, sweetgrass, tobacco and sage) and discussed uses for juniper, wild rice, lilac and deer hide. Our students and staff learned about the symbiotic relationship between the three sisters; corn, squash and beans and had the opportunity to get their hands in the dirt and plant seeds from 1400 year old squash! We’re very excited to see how our three sisters' garden grows this summer! Mr. Carbonneau was also on hand to provide us with 2 seedlings and share his expertise on how to grow and nurture traditional medicinal plants. We are so grateful to them both for spending a very hot afternoon with us! Mr. Karl Sanders was also instrumental in making this project happen as well! Thank you! They were instant hits with our students. All of the improvements in the playground that you see now and will be seeing is the brainchild of Mrs. Huska. She has worked to set up fundraisers, plan, beg & plead for discounts/donations, and convince Mr. Dyck to assist with the planting of trees and the building of some structures. It's the start to some great school community improvements. We are grateful to everyone who has assisted and contributed thus far. 5/6s find a new park in town!5/6 S went to test out the new Willow Park this week. We had a blast and the students could not stop talking about it. We would like to give a big THANK YOU to the community for making a great space for everyone to enjoy! soccer camp next weekend! Are you wanting to take your soccer game to the next level? Do you need some skills development or pointers to improve your game? Attend the Morris soccer skills camp to learn from a certificated soccer coach what you are needing. Soccer has been a part of Randy Ives’ life since he was ten years old. He played competitively for 16 years. He started coaching in 1996 and just finished a successful year with the U15 girls, taking them all the way to the Manitoba provincial finals. This grassroots soccer camp comprises daily sessions in the morning and afternoon. We divide players into two groups: junior-high and high-school. Each group will attend four 1.5 hour on field training sessions over the two days. There are limited spaces available for each session, this ensures players receive coaching attention they need. Coaches focus on activities that build a player’s technique, individual skill development, and game insight. Injury prevention through warm-ups, fun team games play and other soccer related activities are part of a training session. Learn about teamwork and effort while enjoying a dynamic and well-balanced soccer camp. grads continue to raise funds!Members of the Class of 2023 were out again this past week raising funds for the event that is Grad 2023! Gratitude & Intentions/Goals PostersThe 10G Career Development LifeWorks Class created a couple of posters that support life work balance and overall well being over the last couple weeks. Part of any fulfilling life is to be grateful for what you have in or accomplished. According to Harvard Health, “gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.” Read the full article [HERE]: As well, looking toward the future and goal setting can also bring about more joy and a more satisfying life. According to Positive Psychology, “Goals play a dominant role in shaping the way we see ourselves and others. A person who is focused and goal-oriented is likely to have a more positive approach towards life and perceive failures as temporary setbacks, rather than personal shortcomings.” This is part of the Growth Mindset by Carol Dweck, that we have talked about in this class. See the article [HERE] Usually these are done at the beginning of a new calendar year, or month to reflect on the year or month past and look toward the fresh year or month. Ask your students what the are grateful for and share your gratitude. Share your hopes and dreams for the future and find out what they hope to accomplish. It’s quite interesting to see the wide range of topics.
