winter town bus has taken its last rideWith the first day of spring comes the last ride of the Winter Town Bus routes for the 2022-23 school year. The last rides given were Friday, March 24. We appreciate the bus drivers for pulling additional duty to make this happen and for the division's transportation department for accommodating us. Senior Years' Ski trip a success! It has been what feels like a very long time since we have been able to plan a ski trip. We made it happen this year! 27 students from grade 9-12 ventured out for the annual ski trip to Asessippi Ski Resort for two days of skiing and snowboarding. We had skiers and boarders of all levels, some that seemed like experts and some learning for the first time. I am glad to say there were no major injuries, which is always nice! We had two great days on the hill, I think the last day some of our students were the last ones on the hill. Everyone seemed to have a great time, hopefully this trip will now turn into an annual event! Thank you to everyone who made this happen, here are a few shout outs; Mrs. Zimmerman, Mr. Watson. Mrs. Huska, Karl & Laurie Sanders and of course all the parents! - Mr. Ricard come on out! Twenty-Five vendors confirmed!!grade 5/6s join up to have friendly tournamentThe grade 5/6's had their annual floor hockey tournament this past week at the Morris Multiplex. Students from Morris, Lowe Farm, Heritage and Rosenort School attended. Thank you to the Morris Multiplex for letting us use their facility and for all they did to make it a success! We would also like to thank Mr. Lehman and Mr. Ricard for organizing and planning this event along with Mrs. Siemens and Ms. Thiessen for running the canteen. craft club fun!!Over the last few weeks once a week a group of grade 1 and 2 students spend 30 minutes crafting, laughing and sharing stories together! Here are some reasons why crafting is important for child development! 1. Motor Skills When kids use their fingers to manipulate art materials they are developing their fine motor skills as they use those small muscles in their hands. Their bilateral coordination skills improve as they learn to use both hands at the same time. 2. Literacy Early childhood literacy covers a wide range of areas from speaking and reading to listening and understanding. When kids make crafts they get to talk about their work which develops their communication skills. “Why did you choose that colour?” “Tell me more about your creation!” “How else can we make that work?” 3. Math Concepts Basic math skills are often not thought of as being part of crafting. But math skills are used frequently and have a positive effect on developing mathematical skills in young children. Kids get to learn and recognize different shapes, count, sort, estimate, measure and problem solve. 4. Creatively Art allows children to develop their creativity which is important throughout their lives. “In children creativity develops from their experiences with the process, rather than concern over the finished product.” 5. Self-Esteem Crafting gives children a sense of achievement and allows them to take pride in their work which builds confidence. Making art is a great way to discover that it is ok to make mistakes and take risks and that getting things “wrong” can lead to a whole new idea. Kids get to try new things and also to develop their self regulation skills (eg. when waiting for paint to dry). This helps them develop patience, which everyone needs to learn! ***Information from the Activity Box*** 3/4s crown intramural floor hockey champs!Last month's grade 3/4 intramurals was floor hockey. We had a great turn out with 6 teams competing in the month long tournament. Twice a week each team battled hard and there were a number of close games. In the end, it was the Pittsburgh Penguins defeating the Vancouver Canucks in a close 4-3 game for the championship! The next intramural tournament will be basketball, students can sign up right after spring break. an early years visitorOur Early Years students' had the pleasure of having a visitor to their classroom. Ms. Lindsey, Mrs. Bartel's daughter, stopped by with a two (2) day old lamb. The students were allowed to be hands on as well as ask any questions they had. We appreciate Ms. Lindsey's willingness to help our students learn this week! Thank you! Staff vs student hockey gameThe annual Staff vs Students Hockey game was a great time! The staff won in a “shootout!” Congrats to Mrs. K for scoring the winner!! Way to Go, MAV’s! food drive continuesThe Grades 7/8 classrooms had a visit from Rosalie Fulford this week. We invited her to come speak to us about the history of the Red River Valley Food Bank, as well as the current issues that this important institution is facing. During the lockdowns they were not able to hold their regular town-wide food drives. Increasing food prices have meant that more people need to use the food bank. It also means the costs for the food bank to provide food for its clients have gone way up. Combined with the reduction in food donations, this amounts to a "perfect storm" for our food bank. After reading an article in the Southeast Journal by Sean Conway, our 7/8s decided to do something to help the food bank! The 7/8s will be collecting food items and toiletries in their classrooms for the month of March. We will be delivering our donations at the end of the month. Find a 7/8 student and give them a food donation! Important items: pasta, pasta sauce, cereal, canned vegetables and fruits, canned meat, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, preserves, and toiletry items. Do you enjoy running in a straight line?
