music brings our grade 1/2's together

Some of our K-2 students had the opportunity to have a combined music class (in the gym) this week. The students had lots of fun sharing their knowledge and helping each other out with new rhythms and instrument names! Great job, MAVS!

Grade 1/2's celebrate 2-22-22 Day!

Mrs. Blanchette's class celebrated a unique day this past Tuesday. A day like February 2nd, 2022 (2-22-22 on a TWO'sday) doesn't happen very often. It was a chance to do some cross-curricular work (Math, Art, etc) in a way to celebrate the day and learn at the same time. Way to Go, MAV's!

mavericks athletics update

The Mavericks Hockey Team competed in the Zone IV playoffs this past weekend, unfortunately falling to Carman. The Varsity Boys Basketball team had a similar fate as they lost to MCI 59-49 in the Zone Quarterfinal. Our JV Girls Basketball team look to fare better on Monday as they play their Zone Semi Final in Rosenort (game time 6pm).

Grade 9-12 Students are encouraged to keep an eye on updates for the upcoming badminton season, as well as an off season training opportunity.

Sad news at morris school

Picture
The Morris School Weekly Blog is meant to inform the school community and provide you with some celebrations and positive stories that leave us feeling good. As the principal, I struggled to decide whether to include something that doesn't fall into the celebration or positive story categories. The reflecting that comes with that struggle to make the decision became absolutely clear and an overwhelming 'YES!' the more I reflected. I feel it is important to honour and support our students even if the news isn't always positive or uplifting. Because we don't always feel positive and upbeat. This is one of those times.

This week we lost one of our own. Grade 9 student, Tyerelle Darling-Khan, passed away suddenly at home on Wednesday evening. Tyerelle may have been new to our school, but as soon as you enter the doors of Morris School, you're a Maverick! Tyerelle arrived from Ecolé St. Malo with a few classmates in the fall, but quickly connected with numerous students, especially our Grade 9 class. Tyerelle's family (two of whom are students at Morris School), his friends, classmates, and our school community has suffered a great loss. We are grateful for the outpouring of support by our students for one another, our staff, divisional staff, staff from other schools (especially Ecolé St. Malo), parents, and the general school community. It means a great deal.

We will need to continue to support one another as we work through this hard time. Please reach out if you are suffering with how to deal with the emotions and feelings that are within as we don't want anyone to feel they are alone. Find a trusted person in our school community and ask them for help or just some time to sit or talk.

report card delays (Grades 9-12 Semester 1)

We are still working on some report card and transcript issues. We are doing our best to fix this in a timely manner. Report cards will be sent out on Tuesday. We apologize for the delays. We have a number of people working hard to provide and implement solutions.

Please keep an eye on your email for your 9-12 students report card on Tuesday. If you need a paper copy please email Ms. Denny at [email protected] to request one.

THANKS MORRIS MULTIPLEX AND TOWN OF MORRIS!

The Morris Multiplex and the Town of Morris has been very supportive of Morris School. It is truly refreshing to see our local civil entities embracing our school community and the students and staff within our walls. A large number of students are benefitting every week from attending school within the Town of Morris. Let us count the ways!!

Reason #1
Our Grade 3/4 students are really enjoying skating twice a week at the Morris Multiplex. Mr. Ricard runs skating drills, plays games and has torch relays! Everyone is really enjoying skating and the new skaters have improved so much in a short time.
Reason #2
Our Physical Education classes have had to adapt to not having a Senior Years Gym as it has been transformed into classroom space for our Grade 9 students. Thanks to the generosity of the Morris Multiplex staff, offering up their conference hall space, the invitation is allowing us to use their amazing facility and equipment over the past few weeks. Students have enjoyed having a warm place to play games, be active, and improve their Pickleball skills! Thank you!
Reason #3
Thank you to the Town of Morris for loaning us your snowshoes! It’s a great way for our Phys. Ed. students to enjoy the great outdoors that just happens to be blanketed with a ton of awesome snow! We appreciate your generosity and the ease of which you made this happen.
Reason #4
Our Grade 5/6 students are completely engaged in tobogganing over the past two weeks. Thanks to the everyone involved from the Town of Morris for making the tobogganing hill again this winter!

Mavericks capture zone iv curling title

Picture
The Morris Boys Curling team are Zone IV Champions. This past weekend the Zone IV High School Curling Championships took place here in Morris at the Morris Curling Club. Your very own Maverick boys curling team, skip Zach Norris, third Avery Skog, second Ethan Brandt, and lead Andrew Penner participated in the event over the weekend and went a perfect 5-0 to win the Zone IV Banner. This marks the first Zone IV banner win in curling for Morris School in decades.

The boys started the weekend off with a game at 8:30 am Saturday morning against the Koscielny team from Miami and came away with a convincing 10-2 win. In their second game of the day the boys took on the Hanks team from Morden Collegiate and won that game 8-3. Their third game of the day was against the Krahn team from Winkler and snuck out a tight 6-5 win. The last game of the day was against the Olafson team from Portage Collegiate. After a tight first 5 ends the boys broke the game open with a 3 ender in the 6th end to take a 6-3 lead into the 7th end. The boys were able to add a steal of 1 in the 7th end to win the game 7-3 to finish the day at a perfect 4 wins and 0 losses and punch their ticket into the A side final at 2:30 pm on Sunday.

On Sunday at 2:30 pm the boys took on the same Olafson team from Portage in the A side final. The boys started off well with a deuce in the first end. They gave up a single to Portage in the second end and then opened the game wide open in the third with a big 3 ender to take a 5-1 lead. The Portage team responded with a single in the 4th to give the Mavs a 5-2 lead going into the fourth end break. In the fifth end the Mavs managed to score a single to take a commanding 6-2 lead into the sixth end. The Portage team responded with a single in the sixth but it was not enough and the Mavericks won this tilt 6-3 to cap off their perfect unbeaten weekend.

Next up for the curling team is the MHSAA Curling Provincials in Hamiota on March 3th - 5th.

Congratulations again to Zach, Avery, Ethan and Andrew for winning the banner and also being excellent ambassadors for Morris School all weekend!

Wanted: gently used skates

Picture
The Grades 1-4 classes have been really enjoying Phys. Ed. classes at the arena twice a week. Unfortunately, we still seem to be short a number of skates, especially for our grade 1/2 kids. If anyone thinks they may have some old skates at home they are willing to donate to the school, that would be greatly appreciated.

Please email me directly if you have any questions or have some skates for us. I could even come and pick them up.  Thank you so much!!!

Mr. Rick Ricard

Basketball: The Varsity Boys have qualified for playoffs! They host MCI on Tuesday at 6. The JV Girls have an exhibition game vs. Elm Creek on Wednesday at 5:30. Both games are being live-streamed on our Mavericks Athletics YouTube page.

Hockey: The MAVS are headed into playoffs and will face Carman. They play Saturday (tomorrow) in Carman at 3:00 pm and at home on Sunday at 7:30.

Good luck to all Maverick teams as they compete to represent the school and put their heart and soul on the line while doing so! We appreciate it!

I love to read month - we're in the middle of it!

On Tuesday, February 15th, the K to 4 classes were invited to a virtual I Love to Read visit with Karly from 102.3 Radio in Winnipeg.  Karly read the book "Pig the Pug" and told stories of her own pups.  She is also a big Winnipeg Jets fan and plays hockey herself, so there were lots of questions from the kids on all topics.
More entries have been received for the Buddy Reading Photo Contest.  The last week of February is coming up so get your pictures in to Mrs. DeKezel.  Here are a few of the entries received this past week.

an african adventure in access class

In ACCESS we have enjoyed Mrs. Noel's cross-curricular focus on Africa with art projects featuring Kente weaving and acrylic zebra portraits, cooking and sampling delicious Moroccan style dishes like chicken tagine with couscous, carrot salad and mint tea, and creating the Sphinx, pyramids and animals such as a flamingo, giraffe and zebra out of Lego.

We watched Queen of Katwe (a true story from Uganda) and are reading "A Long Walk to Water" by Linda Sue Park about a Sudanese "Lost Boy" and the ongoing water crisis in South Sudan.

The students really enjoy the diverse way we are taught to appreciate the culture, wildlife and true stories of a riveting continent.

We will share one recipe too. Enjoy!

Students in Outdoor Education have been taking part in snowshoeing and learning about proper ways to create a fire. This includes what type of kindling and wood to look for, and how to break sticks into suitable sizes. Hana found out that it’s easier to break sticks between two trees, instead of breaking it over her head! Way to Go, Hana! Always learning!!

Semester 1 comes to an end

Our Grades 7-12 students have finished up their work today for the first semester of the 2021-22 school year. Our students and staff have experienced COVID pivoting, snow storms, wind chill, and other adjustments over the last five months but have come through it well. When second semester starts on Tuesday, February 8th, we will still be in CODE ORANGE...the same level as we are in today. Our hope is for a good start to the semester and some memories made for our students, especially our Class of 2022! Please find a room allocation list below for our students' second semester classes. Way to Go, MAV's! Report cards will be emailed to parents next week OR you can download the PowerSchool App to see them as well.

Our Kindergarten classes have been doing an inquiry about winter, and are investigating to find out what animals do in winter. This week they created groundhog burrows in honour of Groundhog Day.

taking advantage of the snow!!

athletes of the month - december

Last week we highlighted the Artist of the Month for December. This week's blog has our Athletes of the Month for December!

Damon Johnson - During the month of December the Morris Mavericks Hockey Team played 7 games in which Damon recorded 12 pts while playing over 30 minutes a night. Also not to mention a game winning shootout goal in the Franco Fun tournament in Winnipeg. Damon is a work horse for the team and leads by example with his tenacious play and positive attitude. We can’t wait to see what he will do in the second half of the season.

Logan Mazinke - The backbone of the Morris Mavericks hockey team would be Logan Mazinke. His great play in the month of December led the Mavericks to get their first 2 wins of the season. One being a thrilling shootout win where he made the winning save on the last shooter. Way to go Logan. Logan faces 50+ shots a night and always gives the team a chance to win the game. Goodluck in the second half of the season.

Maverick athletics update

Both Varsity Boys and JV Girls saw two games postponed due to weather this week. Despite this, we are determined and excited to continue our league schedule next week. The girls host Elm Creek on Tuesday Feb 8th at 6pm. While the Boys play Wednesday (vs. St. Pauls) and Thursday (vs. MCI) at home. Both boys games start at 6pm. All games can be found on the Morris Mavericks Athletics YouTube page.

students - please dress for the weather!

Picture
With our current winter temperatures changing on a daily basis and students having to stagger our entrance times, we would ask that our students and their families do their best to dress for the weather. Multiple layers and options might need to be planned as mornings are usually colder than afternoons. We want to ensure our students are safe and comfortable from the minute they leave their homes to the moment they return at the end of a school day. If students forgot an important piece of warm weather clothing, please ask your teacher as there are extra toques, mitts, etc at the school that we can access quickly.
