We focused our theme on polar bears this year and they turned out great! grad prom fundraiserGrad Convocation fundraisergrade 7/8 curlers hit the ice!On Thursday, Feb. 16, two strong teams represented Morris at the annual grade 7/8 divisional bonspiel, hosted by Morris Curling Club. In a field of 16 teams, the Mavs played very well and both teams made the playoffs, with Morris 1 falling just short in the final game to earn 2nd place overall. Way to go! trivia night was a hit!Maddox’s trivia night fundraiser was a huge success! The community really showed up to support this family. There were 18 teams registered of 6-8 people with 10 rounds of trivia around subjects that Maddox loves (turtles, Lego, videogames etc.). The silent auction was a huge success with over 25 normal prizes and 8 grand prizes. A big thank you goes out to everyone who helped make this event possible and a special shout out to Megan Thiessen, Brenda Lehman, Melinda B, Julie Huska and Les Dyck. At the end, they had the opportunity to design and build miniature planes. mavericks athletic updateBasketball Our Varsity basketball teams saw their seasons come to an end this past week. Meanwhile our JV boys beat Elm Creek to earn a spot in the Zone Final on Tuesday in Rosenort (game time 7:30). Both 7/8 teams enter playoffs this Wednesday, the girls head to Oak Bluff while the Boys are off to St. Malo. Reminder Basketball players to hand in your jerseys to your coaches. Hockey The Mavericks made quick work of the Garden Valley Collegiate Zodiacs in the first round of their Zone IV playoffs, winning two straight (3-1 in Morris; 5-2 in Winkler). The Mavericks now face the Morden Thunder is a much anticipated semi-final round. Game 1 goes in Morden (Huron Windows Arena) on February 27th at 8 pm. Game 2 will be in Morris on Thursday, March 2nd at 7:30. Game 3, if needed, will be held in Morden (Co-op Arena) on Saturday, March 4th at 8:30 pm. Wrestling Our Mavericks had the opportunity to wrestle in two tournaments over the past two weekends. The long weekend saw 11 Mavericks travel to Niverville to take on all-comers! Congratulations to James C, Samantha S, and Alexis W for capturing gold medals, Emma K, Dallas P, and Christoph S-H for earning silver medals, and Hannah K for wrestling hard for a bronze. This past weekend, five Mavericks wrestled at the St. Paul's High School tournament. Congratulations to Samantha S for earning her second gold medal in as many weekends. Also capturing gold as a result of two great matches was Katie McLachlan! James C and Emma K earned silver medals. Hannah K earned another bronze medal for her performance! The wrestlers finish up their season this upcoming weekend at Provincials. The tournament will be hosted at the Canadian Mennonite University in Winnipeg on Saturday, March 4th. All attendance will be adjusted to reflect the timetable changes and Ms. Denny hopes to have these changes sorted out by Monday morning. mavericks attend provincial seminarOn Thursday February 9th, six Maverick students went to a Safe Sport conference hosted by Manitoba High School Athletics Association and Sport Manitoba. They were joined by two leaders and pioneers in the Safe Sport movement: Sandra Kirby and Allyson Forsyth. Both of these speakers are ex Olympian’s who are fighting to ensure that sports can be a safe and enjoyable place for ALL! Their message was very powerful and real. These six Maverick students were great representatives of our school and community, and have gained valuable insight on this important topic. mavericks athletics updateBasketball The regular season is winding down for our Maverick Basketball Teams. With losses in Carman and Rosenort this week, the Varsity Girls finish 4th in league play and head to Rosenort next Thursday for the Zone Semi Final. They are hosting a 4-team tournament this weekend here in Morris. Game times for the girls are 3:30 on Friday (vs. Rosenort) and 10:00am (vs. Immanuel Christian) and 3:30 (vs. Shevchenko) on Saturday. It is a busy week ahead for the Varsity Boys, who need to defeat RVS on Monday and Westpark on Tuesday in order to qualify for playoffs. The JV Boys currently sit in 3rd place and will play their final league game of the season on Tuesday at Westpark. Hockey The Mavericks have wrapped up their regular season! The Mavs finished with a 15-7-2 record which is good for 32 points. The Mavs will finish either 3 or 4 in the league standings (depending how teams finish up this weekend). This means that they have home ice advantage for the first round of playoffs! The Mavs first home playoff game will be next Wednesday 7:30 pm at the Morris Multiplex (February 15). Way to Go, MAV's! red river u9 girls invite you to the jamboree!Some Morris School Mavericks will exchange their Maverick horse for a Red River Wild horse next weekend to host their playoff Jamboree tournament. All games listed in the schedule below will be held at the Morris Multiplex. Students from Morris School include Madison Saurette, Emma Peters, Jillian Hamblin, Kaydence Ewbank, Codie Reckseidler, Piper Peters, Mila Berg and Violet Collette. There also athletes from St. Jean, Dominion City and Emerson. There will be a silent auction occuring Saturday with some fantastic Prizes including a big screen TV, lots of prizes for kids and hockey lovers. February is "I love to read" monthThis year in K-4 we are celebrating reading with the 7 sacred teachings theme. Each class has a goal for reading in the month of February. If they meet their goal, Mr. Watson will buy their classroom $100.00 worth of books from Scholastic Book Clubs. There is also a February Calendar (see below). The calendar has suggested activities that you can do at home with your child. If your child completes an activity, their name will be entered into a draw for a prize. Thanks for encouraging the love of reading! If you have been by the library lately, you will see that there is a contest going on for "I Love to Read" month. Grade 5/6 students from Mrs. Siemens' class have helped Mrs. DeKezel set up a "Guess Who" contest. Photos on the window show teachers reading. The catch is that you can only see the top of the staff member's head behind the book. Take a close look because there are clues in the titles of the books that will help you. Forms for entry are outside the library. Fill in your guesses from #1 to #16 and enter in the box provided for your chance to win a prize this month! Grades 5-8 - the challenge is on!!Attention Grades 5-8 students. Below you will find "I Love to Read" calendar challenge. If you complete one of the challenges you can show Mrs. Siemens or get their teacher to email her and then enter their name in the draw box (located in Mrs. Siemens' classroom) to win a prize. A prize winner will be drawn every week in February. The tournament of books!One of the activities for I LOVE TO READ MONTH is a BOOK TOURNAMENT! Eight books were chosen by staff members and will advance week by week, tournament style, until there are only two books left. Students will be introduced to the books live on the morning announcements and will vote for their favorite picture books throughout the month. Semester 2 starts MondayWith exams written for the first time in a while, Semester 1 comes to a close. Semester 2 starts on Monday, February 6. We've had to delay the submission of Semester 1 grades based on teacher feedback, so the PowerSchool portal has been locked until report cards can be generated. Lists of first period classes will be on display throughout the halls in the Senior Years' portion of the school. Staff will also be in the halls to assist with students locating their first period class. Once inside the class, your first period teacher will hand students a hard copy of their Semester 2 timetables. When PowerSchool is open again, we will let the school community know. When it is, we would encourage all Grades 9-12 students and their families to download the PowerSchool app if you have not done so already. The PowerSchool app will contain your second semester timetable. Timetable changes need to be arranged through Mrs. Edel and parents need to sign off on these changes before they are made. You can see your S2 (Semester 2) timetables in Powerschool when you log in on a computer. Go to My Schedule and select the Matrix View to view the entire year's schedule. textbook returnsNow that Semester 1 is complete, we would ask students to please return any textbooks, atlas and whatever else t received on LOAN from the school to complete their course work. We have other classes and students who will require them for the second semester, so please return your textbooks, etc. as soon as possible. outdoor courts making some great headway!The committee has been hard at work. We've continued our fund raising for the project and have officially raised a total of $219,313.44 to date. The project was tendered on December 23/22 and a motion was made by the Red River School Division Board of Trustees to approve a written invitation to enter into direct negotiations with JRoss Construction & Landscaping Ltd. for the Morris School Outdoor Multi Use Recreation Court. We are excited to announce that the project will commence in July 2023. We haven't reached our end goal though and still need your help in order to complete this project. Any donation moves us closer to that end gooal and the top of our thermometer. parent council informationWe were recently instructed by our school board to provide information to our school community regarding Parent Advisory Councils. The directive includes.. Morris School does not currently have a Parent Advisory Council (PAC), but we will do our best to provide information on the above items. (a) According to the Resource Guide for Manitoba’s Parent Advisory Councils, PACs are created for a reason, and it is important to discuss and decide together what that purpose will be within a school community. The Parent Advisory Council within a school has many functions and roles. Examining this purpose may lead to the development of your PAC mission statement. Some of the areas a PAC might work in include:

artist in the school visits Mr. Moore's classmavericks athletic updateBasketball Both the Junior Varsity Boys and Varsity Girls were in action Thursday evening, with the Boys losing a heartbreaker to Elm Creek and the Girls dropping their game to Carman. The Varsity Boys head to Gimli for a tournament this weekend. Next week the Junior Varsity Boys head to Rosenort on Tuesday while the Varsity Boys travel to Carman on Thursday. The Varsity Girls will be traveling on both days as well as hosting their home tournament next weekend. Hockey The Boys defeated Carman 8-1 Friday night. They play a home game in St. Jean on Tuesday night vs. Miller (puck drop 7:30) followed by a road game on Thursday in Carman (puck drop 7:30). |
