JV Boys are practicing Tuesday and Thursday. See Mr. K. Stevenson if you'd still like to join. Varsity Girls are now in full swing. See Mrs. Kurylko if you want to join the team. JV boys are hosting a tournament this coming weekend. They play at 1:00pm on Friday and 9:00am on Saturday, followed by a playoff game Saturday afternoon. Grade 7/8 Basketball sign ups can be found in the 7/8 hallway. Practices will be starting soon so listen for announcements. Wrestling has also started. We are always open to having new students join. Any student from K-12 is welcome. In order to fit students in where they will achieve the most success and have the most fun, we have three groups running.
student leadership host 12 days of christmassenior years' banquetMorris school welcomes gaga ball!!A group of generous parents are combining with some of our students to build a Gaga Ball pit for Morris School. This initiative is a result of our Tim Hortons Camp community improvement project. Our Grade 5/6 students felt this project would improve our student experience during recess. The generosity of our parents and Morris TIMBER MART are making this project a reality. Our Mavericks are grateful! A number of students have played the game before and are enjoying it immensely. A number of students spent last week's physical education classes playing the game to learn the rules. Due to its popularity, we may have to restrict certain age groups during specific recesses to ensure all students can enjoy the new experience. one person's trash is another's treasure!!What does white elephant sale mean? A white elephant sale is a collection of used items being sold, much akin to a yard sale or garage sale, often as a fundraiser for a cause. Grade 5/6 fundraiser Though this would be a 5/6 incentive, we would ask for donations from everyone!! Anyone who wanted to donate GUC items would be greatly appreciated. Intake dates for donations will be 9-NOON the second Wednesday of each month until May. November 13th December 10th January 8th February 12th March 11th April 8th May 6th (1st Wednesday) The Town of Morris has a Town Wide Garage Sale every May (date TBD) which is advertised by the Recreation Office including a Map of the town and all the sales that register. This will help with advertising. The money raised would go towards upgrading the school yard (paying for the recently constructed Gaga Ball Pit, for example) and play areas or anything else the class can come up with. Morris School visits the museumThe Morris & District Centennial Museum played host to our Grades 1-4 classes this past week. Our students enjoyed their active learning experiences immensely. Grade 5/6 Chess club is up and running!Maverick Varsity Volleyball wraps upThe varsity volleyball seasons wrapped up this weekend as both teams unfortunately failed to qualify for provincials. Both teams represented our school admirably, the girls being just 1 point shy of clinching that elusive provincial tournament spot. Despite this weekend's disappointment, it would be unfair to call this season anything other than a huge success! Combined, the teams had a 74% win percentage (138-48), produced 5 tournament championships, 8 player of the game/tournament all-star awards, 2 MHSAA Athlete of the Week awards, an overall league record of 16-2, and two Zone Championships. Congratulations to both teams, and thank you for the countless hours you have put in over the years to help make our athletics program what it is today. Grades 7-12 Students: Mav Group MeetingOur Grade 7-12 students will be meeting in their Mav Group's tomorrow. Mav Groups have been set up to strengthen our school community as well as improve student voice. This month's topic is cell phone use in schools. Our current policy is requiring some updating. We would appreciate the voice of those we serve. That voice has a chance tomorrow morning. We look forward to seeing all students take the opportunity to update our policies so they are reasonable and reflect a current practice that will help our students learn. varsity volleyball teams do a double take!!This past week, the varsity volleyball teams capped off a great regular season to take both AA Zone IV titles. The boys earned their first banner since the 2009 season by beating RVS in four sets. The #8 provincially ranked girls team continued to excel within their zone play to beat a tough St. Paul's Collegiate team. Congratulations to the coaches and our student-athletes for their well earned victories. Good luck to both teams as they head to their respective provincial qualifying games. We also wish the JV teams the best of luck as they travel Wednesday to their respective Zone IV Championship tournaments. Go MAV's Go! Picture retakes - Wednesday, November 13For those students who missed the first picture day or would like a second chance to get the best version of their school photo, Picture Retake Day is Wednesday, November 13. You must sign up in the office before Wednesday. New student group set up to lead and serveOver thirty Grade 5/6 students have joined the Conflict Resolution Officer (CRO) team. These students are volunteering to make a difference in the playground during recess. The team will be trained to identify and solve conflicts that can occur in our school grounds. The CRO's will assist with reminding students of rules, helping students who may have a conflict with other students, officiate a soccer game, and generally assist our adults make our student experience a positive one during their recess time. The group will be organized by Mr. Watson and the Grade 5/6 teachers. Seven different teams have been set up to cover all recesses (am, lunch, and pm recesses). The students will be identified as CRO's by their safety vests. The students have been introduced to the K-6 student body. During this introduction, we have asked all K-6 students to be their best in the playground and treat the CRO's with respect during their interactions. The goals of this endeavour is to assist our students solve their own issues with possible assistance of their peers, to empower our Grade 5/6 students to help make our school community better and to gain some leadership skills, and to improve the safety of our playground by increasing the number of people looking out for the safety of our students. Milk program surveyThe K-6 students have been involved in the Milk Program in the past. The program is offered by the Dairy Farmers of Manitoba. In order to gauge the interest, a survey has been created. The link to the survey can be found here. School spirit alive & Well at morris schoolOur first spirit week of the season was a huge hit. We had a number of our Mavericks from K-12 get into the spirit and dress up according to the theme of the day. We appreciate all the efforts of our student leadership group, led by Ms. Hillary Jorgenson and Ms. Deanna Chanthavong. Students and staff enjoyed their week! Parent workshop - this tuesdayA group of Morris School students attended Discovery Days at the University of Manitoba. The students were together for the keynote speaker, then they attended the workshops of their choice. Our students gained a clear picture of what it would be like to be a health professional by interacting with researchers, clinicians and educators in their real-life work setting. Maverick Varsity Boys continue to excel!The Varsity Boys Volleyball team continues to excel. Fresh off their second consecutive tournament win at RVS last weekend, the boys hosted their own tournament this weekend. The boys were not giving hosts as they captured their third tournament victory in as many tries! Congratulations MAV's! varsity girls volleyball travel to brandonThe varsity girls were in Brandon this weekend for their final tournament of the year. The Spartan Dig hosts 40 teams in the Varsity Girls division alone. The Mavericks finished round robin play with a 3-3 record but unfortunately with such a large tournament, placements can be difficult and there was no chance for redemption so the Mavericks had to play through C Side competition on Saturday. The ladies did not show any signs of frustration, and simply dominated Saturday's play. The Mavericks went 6-0, outscoring the competition 150-83, to capture the C-Side Championship with ease. The Morris VG's host Carman on Tuesday at 7pm following the boys game vs Shevchenko. Winners will play for the Zone IV championship on Thursday. Grade 3/4's were a-MAzing!!A planned field trip to A-Maze-In Corn had to be postponed due to our lovely October storm! The trip was rescheduled to this past week. The class dressed warm and used their navigating skills and made it through the maze. A ton of fun was had by all! Thank you to Mrs. C.
