Thank you class of 2022This past Friday, our school celebrated the Class of 2022 by hosting our convocation ceremonies. A total of 43 Maverick graduates received diplomas. Our Class of 2022 are headed out to the working world, continuing their education in vocational studies, or headed to post-secondary institutions throughout Canada. Over $100 000 in scholarships were recognized during the convocation ceremonies. We are proud of our group and wish them well with whatever they decide to do. Here's a list of our Maverick grads...

Mrs. Derewianchuk The School Grad Committee k-4 field day - a huge success!!It has been awhile since we have been able to host a field day like this and I can honestly say, all of the kids had missed it and they all had a great time! Students, kindergarten to grade 4 competed in 10 different events. Five of the events being track and field events we had been working on in Phys. Ed. class and the other 5 events being team co-operative stations. There was also a tug-of-war event, which may have been the highlight of the day! All of our students participated very well and most importantly they all had FUN! A huge thank you to Mrs. Skoglund and Mr. Moore’s grade 5/6 classes who helped set up and lead our young students around for the day. It was good to see what great role models the 5/6’s were to the younger kids. We definitely could not have done it without the 5/6 students. Also, thank you to all the teachers and EA’s who helped with the day! A special thanks to Mrs. Skoglund and Mrs. Wattam who organized the canteen and all the EA’s who worked the canteen during the day! One last shout out to Pat and the Big Way staff for helping with the pizza lunch. With the canteen and pizza lunch, we were able to fundraise some money to make next year's Field Day even better!!! thank you and farewellThe blog would take some space to thank and send our best wishes to Ms. Jozie Buhler and Mr. Eric Martel who will be finishing up their Morris School teaching careers this week. It's not too late to come join us for our last run of the year this Tuesday, June 28th at 3:20pm. See you there! One of our Running Club moderators modelled the spirit she sees from our Maverick students. Mrs. Zimmerman competed in the recent Manitoba Marathon (1/2 Marathon) and set a personal best time! Congratulations to Mrs. Zimmerman! What a great role model for our Running Club students. Maverick Invited to Train with team Manitoba It is always great to see when students excel in sports not only in school community, but also in provincial and national levels. Georson Labauza, a grade nine student, received an invitation to be a member of 2022 Volleyball Manitoba Boys Team. The offer came after intense four-day tryouts conducted at Dakota Community Centre in Winnipeg. The event is mostly participated by athletes born in 2006 and 2007 with school and club volleyball experience. Georson will be part of the four teams training in preparation for the 2022 Manitoba Cup. Georson played for the Morris School Varsity Boys' Team and he was also a member of University of Manitoba Junior Bison 15U. Way to go Georson! Way to go Mavs! golf anyone? The Access Junior Golf Tour is a summer program open to golfers of all abilities aged 9-18 in Manitoba. Each event costs $20 and includes a meal, snacks, prizes and a round of golf. This year, the tour will make its way to Carman, Morden, Winkler and St. Andrews. Registration forms for the 2022 Junior Golf Tour are available online by visiting: https://community.accesscu.ca/access-junior-golf Dates and Locations: July 11: Carman July 20: Morden August 9: Winkler August 15: St. Andrews (Larters) Thank you to our retirees! As the end of each school year approaches, some bittersweet feelings seem to be associated with that event. This year is no exception. One of these feelings is a direct result of announcing three retirements from our Morris School staff. After many years at Morris School, Mrs. Robin Wiebe, Mr. Tony Lopez, and Mr. Mike Zinn will be retiring from Morris School. Mrs. Wiebe has most recently been a part of our Senior Years Resource and Alternative Classroom team. However, Mrs. Wiebe has held a number of important roles within our school walls and had an impact on many students. This impact allows us to forgive her for cheering for the Calgary Flames!?! Thank you, Mrs. Wiebe. Mr. Lopez can be found most days in the computer lab or one of the surrounding classrooms teaching graphics or Math. His most recent significant contribution to the school has been the planning, implementation, and successful execution of our online daily announcements (Mavericks Media). This endeavour has improved our school community immensely since its implementation. To top it off, Mr. Lopez organized our live-streaming of school events during the tightening of protocols to allow our school community to watch these events even if they couldn’t be there in person. Thank you, Mr. Lopez. We hope your love of motorcycles, the Habs, and your family keeps you busy in your retirement. I cannot think of a time that I have not seen a smile on Mr. Zinn’s face. This gentlemen has been at our school over 30 years and continues to show up, work hard, and enjoy the people around him. His unsung work after everyone has left the school has been appreciated by all of us even though the work is done when nobody is watching. This multi-talented individual will probably paint, fix up antiques, and enjoy some time off, but his most important role as a grandfather will probably keep him the busiest. Thank you, Mr. Zinn. Our students and staff were able to share their congratulations, best wishes, and even disappointment with our retirees this week as they shared some cake. Grades 7-12 Activity Day - A huge successDue to the fabulous student leadership group at our school, our Grades 7-12 students enjoyed an awesome afternoon under blue skies. We will again be emailing report cards home to parents. If you require a paper copy, please let the office or your student's homeroom teacher know. Paper copies will be sent home with students or mailed home. highlights of lunch & bake sale for eli JThis past Friday, our Student Leadership Group as well as a number of staff and school community volunteers organized a Hot Dog Lunch and Bake Sale in support of one of our Grade 9 students, Eli Jashyn. Eli has recently been diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing treatments at the Children's Hospital in Winnipeg. A number of our staff and students were able to connect with Eli on a video call. It was great to see his face and hear his voice! Our school community stepped up, big time, to make this fundraising event successful. We love our Maverick spirit and we hope the Jashyn's know how much our school cares for Eli and the family as a whole. Thank you to everyone who supported the event. PS...a bit of an update. Eli was in good spirits on Friday even in the middle of his treatments. He went on his first walk in a while, so that is a great sign! After winning the 'AA' Aggregate banner at Zone 4 Championships, 10 of our athletes advanced to provincials and represented us very well. At provincials, most of our athletes accomplished 'personal bests' in their events, which is very impressive to do at an event that has 3000 athletes and spectators watching you! Here are some of our notable finishers: -Boys Varsity 4x100m relay team - 7th place in Manitoba (only rural school in the top 12 of Manitoba!!) -Amy Neustater - 10th place in Varsity Girls Pentathlon Andrew Penner - 9th Place in Varsity Boys Pentathlon Alex Sabourin - 7th in JV Boys Discus Rocky Musa - 6th in Varsity Boys Pentathlon Excellent job athletes! Some June exams returnJune Exams return this week after a hiatus for the past two years. Students in Grades 11 & 12 will be writing between Monday and Thursday. A full schedule can be found below in the weekly calendar (This Week @ Morris School). We wish our students all the best in this important experience as it will prepare those students who plan to attend post-secondary institutions this year or next. Maverick track & field compete at Provincials!Ten of our Fourteen Mavericks who competed at last week's Zone IV Track & Field Championships qualified to participate at the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Championships (MHSAA) in Winnipeg this past weekend. Students from all high schools are eligible to compete if they met the qualifying standard set by the MHSAA. Highlights included many personal bests, some top ten finishes, and heat wins. A full summary of results will be posted in next week's blog. Another highlight for our students was getting their hands on the Zone IV Track & Field Championship banner they earned the week before! Way to Go, MAV's! Grade 7/8 Science students actively learnGrade 7/8S were measuring the mass and volume of different liquids in order to calculate their densities. Students measured the mass of their empty graduated cylinders first so that it could be subtracted when they weighed the cylinders with each liquid. Students divided the mass of each liquid by the volume in order to determine densities expressed in grams per millilitre. Students have also been learning about buoyancy and viscosity as a part of their fluids unit. Density is mass divided by volume: D=m/v. Students also calculated the volume of a solid ball of clay by immersing it in 150ml of water. The clay ball sank and the volume rose to 175.5ml. Thus the volume of the lump of clay was 25.5 ml. By pressing the ball of clay into a bowl shape they were able to displace enough water to make the clay float on the water, whereas it had sunk when it was in a ball. This is because the buoyant force is a function of the volume of water displaced! The shape of any object is very important when determining whether something floats or not. Way to Go, MAV's! access classroom complete world tour! The ACCESS class has traveled virtually all around the world this year. Our second last stop was Australia and Oceania. After learning about the geography of the region as well as its people and animals, we made Maori inspired dot art and Polynesian Tiki Masks. We celebrated the end of this unit with a delicious Polynesian lunch "luau". student leadership continue to give backThe Morris student leadership with the help of our maverick students were able to donate $1 100 to the Ukrainian. track & field program are zone IV champions!!On Wednesday, June 1st, the Morris Mavericks Track & Field team competed at the Zone IV Track & Field championship in Winkler Manitoba. Although conditions were not ideal due to a very wet field the athletes competed hard and improved throughout the day. Some notable performances include: Amy Neustater: 1st in varsity girls javelin, Alex Sabourin who threw 27.72m in junior varsity discus to win 1st and lastly Rocky Musa: 1st in the varsity men's pentathlon and 1st in the varsity men's 100m sprint. Way to Go, MAV's! Ms. Wray has some news!!Ms. Wray has been away for a couple of weeks awaiting the arrival of a new addition to her family. Her patience has paid off. On Wednesday, June 1st, Harrison William Rex was born. Harrison was 9 lbs, 1 ounce and is almost ready to play basketball at the height of 21 inches! Mom, Harrison, and all the family are well. We wish Ms. Wray and her entire family the best and a sincere CONGRATULATIONS! a great spirit week! thank you student leaders! Our school was treated to another spirit week this past week. Our student leadership group planned, prepared, and executed a great week of activities for our K-12 students. These included dressing up according to the theme of the day, cleaning up the Town of Morris, or participating in the Grades 9-12 Grade Wars activities, the students and staff enjoyed themselves immensely. We are grateful of our Student Leadership Group, led by Kyla Johnson and Andrew Penner. They have been inclusive, creative, and hard-working in their development of a student experience that was a welcome return to some sense of normalcy that we haven't experienced in quite some time. Thank you! Way to Go, MAV's! Senior Years concert band back on the road! The Senior Concert Band went on their first real band trip after a few years off of travel! They travelled to Winnipeg and worked with Dr. Jacquie Dawson at the University of Manitoba Faculty of Music. The students did an outstanding job in their workshop and left with tons of new and inspiring music techniques to take back to their band classes. The band travelled to The Forks for lunch and to explore before heading back home. Congratulations to the Senior Concert Band for representing Morris School so well by demonstrating such respect, maturity, kindness, and musicality. outdoor ed completes their camping tripThe Outdoor Ed. students survive their first camping trip! The 'Famed school group from Morris' (as one other hiker called us) completed the entire Epinette Creek trail system (42 kms of trail in Spruce Woods) in just 3 days, all while carrying 30-45 lbs on their backs! On Thursday June 2, 13 students and 5 chaperones embarked on this trip. Day 1 was a gruelling, but enjoyable 21 km hike through the woods and desert-like terrain. The students were absolutely troopers, and expressed a great deal of joy and relief when they finally made it to the water-pump at the campsite! On Friday June 3, we hiked 13 km back towards the entrance, and camped at 'cabin 3' campsite. This 13 km was much more difficult for the group, due to some pesky blisters, sore joints, and a much hotter day! Students enjoyed a quick, much deserved dip in Epinette Creek once we arrived at Friday nights campsite! Saturday June 4th was an easy 8 km hike back to the parking lot, and the end of the Outdoor ed camping trip! During the trip, many games were played, many memories were made, lots of learning occurred, and new friendships were forged. Thanks to the chaperones who participated, and the students who had phenomenal attitudes the entire time! Youth in Philanthropy group gives backThe Morris School YIP group attended the Morris and Area Foundation meeting Thursday evening. Martine Munford, Kyla Johnson and Jill Kolodka did an excellent presentation on the YIP program at Morris school. Two YIP presentations were given, one to the museum for their mural and one to the pool for new equipment. sabourin drafted into the MJHLOver this past weekend, Spencer Sabourin was drafted into the Manitoba Junior Hockey League by the Dauphin Kings. Spencer was the first of four picks the Kings made in the sixth round. Spencer played for the AAA Pembina Valley Hawks U18 team last season. Congratulations Spencer! The start of something specialOur staff members, taking the lead from Mrs. Huska, are on a mission. It's time to address the issue in our basement. After a few years of storing things down there due to Covid, the clutter status is at a high level. On Friday afternoon, Mrs. Avelar, Mrs. Houle, and Mrs. Limpright tackled our paper supply (before and after shots below). Mr. Dyck also started on purging some of the "materials" that have been stored in the basement for some time. Thank you, MAV's! |
