undergrad awards make their returnAfter a few years away, our Undergrad Awards Ceremony returned at Morris School. Seeing as it was our first since the pandemic, we limited the event to students and staff to ensure we remembered how these events went. Thanks to the staff, led by Mrs. Laurie Edel for calling for the return of the event. We also appreciate all the work our front office staff did during a busy time of the year to make this event work. A number of current Grades 10-12 (last year's Grades 9-11) students were recognized for having overall averages of 80% or higher, for being involved in our athletics and/or clubs, and for a combination of those two things. Congratulations to the following students: some ice cream on a rainy dayWe had some rain on Friday, but that didn't damper our students and staff's appetite for some ice cream! As per our last blog post, we had a generous of the Kosawa family, that allowed our school to host a K-6 ice cream fundraiser. In the end, we couldn't leave the Grades 7-12 students out of the fun, so they were invited to participate as well. The Kosawa family operates the Barefoot Cafe (@the_barefoot_cafe_) in St. Malo when the weather is conducive to ice cream and other summer treats. We appreciate the Kosawa family for providing our school with such a unique opportunity. We also appreciate the staff and students from the Alternative Classroom assisting us to ensure all of our "customers" were served quickly and with a smile! The generosity continuesThe blog staff received an email from Mr. David and Mrs. Lorraine Hamblin prior to the release of this week's post. A portion of the email included the following, "We had a big pumpkin patch and the girls (Erin, Addison, Claire, & Paige) are selling the pumpkins as a fundraiser for the school band programs. They have carving, pie, and all sorts of decorative pumpkins. We are located east of Morris on Hwy 23 and then 0.9 km north on PR246. Payment can be made by cash or e-transfer to Lorraine Hamblin at 204-712-6170." This is yet another example of the generosity our school community shows as people continue to step up to give of their talents, treasures, and/or time. We appreciate everyone who finds a way to make our school a better place. Thank you, Hamblins! Way to Go, Mavericks! let's be safe when using crosswalksOur school is close to two busy highways. Highway 23 is right behind our school and Highway 75 is the main street in our town. Understanding that, we are reminding all of our students who walk to and from school to use the crosswalks and use them safely. Here are a few reminders:

As part of the celebration of Truth and Reconciliation Day, we participated in a storytelling session with an indigenous elder. He also had time to take questions at the end of the session the students were more than eager to ask questions about what they learned. At the end of the session, Mr. Mason and his wife gave away an Orange shirt which went to Tyson Funk, the lucky winner! The first week of the 2023-24 school year at Morris School is in the books! We would like to take the time to thank all Morris School community members for helping the first week go well. We appreciate seeing all the students in their classes on their respective first days. The very large majority of classes had all their students in class and on time. Our parents communicated well when they had questions or something they felt our staff needed to know. For those of you who drop off & pick up your students, thank you for not using the bus loop in the back of the school or parking in the circle turnaround at the very end of Toronto Avenue East. We appreciate that! A big thank you to our staff for handling any adjustments that were needed to be made. The first week of school can be stressful enough (for students & staff), so your ability to roll with some of these changes was appreciated. We look forward to our second week. We encourage all community members to contact the school if you have questions. If it is a question about classroom activities, please reach out to the teacher first. If it is administrative in nature (forms, applications, fees, etc.), please ask the front office staff. If you're not sure who to direct your question/comment to, please call the office or speak directly with Mr. Watson. k-8 families...strong beginnings (sign up Online)Strong Beginnings is a MANDATORY assessment that occurs early in September for students in Kindergarten to Grade 8. Grade 12 Access student Benny Loewen passed away. Benny was supposed to return this year for his final year in the Access classroom. Mrs. Noel had reached out to the family and was made aware that Benny and his family were in Mexico when Benny took ill. Benny's relatives and brother confirmed that Benny passed away on August 29 due to complications from pneumonia. It is our understanding that Benny's funeral will occur in Mexico where Benny has a number of family members. If you require support of any kind, please reach out to Mr. Watson, Angela Skog, or one of our student services personnel. We send our deepest sympathies to Benny's family, Mrs. Noel, and her Access team. The team was a tremendous support for Benny and his family and gave so much of themselves to give Benny a great school experience. Benny was a positive presence in our school and we will miss him. We apologize for the sad news to be the first section of our Back to School blog, but our students are the most important thing at our school and we will honour them at all times.
