I love to read monthFebruary is "I Love to Read" Month and we have been celebrating daily with our K to 6 classes in particular. From Royal Readers in the classrooms to Special Guests in the library, our students have enjoyed many guests and stories. Many thanks to our visitors and staff and students who have entertained and educated - some of them were Pat Schmidtke of Bigway Foods, Jack Wiebe of YFC, Student Council Members, Mayor Scott Crick, Les Funk of DMC Paint and Fred Kelesnik of RRVSD. Some media members also visited Morris School this past week. Global Winnipeg's Weather Specialist Mike Koncan read to the Grade 5/6 classes and Tim Friesen of CFAM Radio in Altona read to the Grade 1/2 classes. Outdoor Ed Braves the Cold & Heads to Birds HillOn February 13th, the Senior Years' Outdoor Ed class headed out for their annual field trip to Birds Hill Park. Even though that day saw temps plummet down to minus 30 that didn’t stop the students, they were all eager and willing to participate. While at Birds Hill, the students took two long snowshoe hikes through the park. Some of the trails were groomed but the majority of the time the students were able to break their own trail and experience the effects of wearing the snowshoes. Along the hike they also learned about some of the animals that live in the park and their habitats. The class participated in a classroom lesson on survival in the wilderness and learned about necessary items they may want to have with them in case they were stranded. For lunch they made a bonfire and they all cooked their own lunch over the fire. All in all it was a great experience and they were all glad that we braved the cold and ventured out into the wilderness! kindergarten registration continues...Kindergarten registration packages available for the 2020-2021 school year. Please see the main office. You can also download a registration form online at https://morris.rrvsd.ca/for_parents/registration_forms. When you return the registration documents to the school, we will also need a copy of your student's birth certificate, MB health card, & any court documents regarding custody/care & control. Please contact us at 204.746.2612 if you have any questions. drop off & pick up students on TorontoWe've had a number of concerns expressed by parents and other members of our school community about the congestion at the east end of Toronto Avenue at the beginning and end of the school day. We would ask that people do not stop their vehicles anywhere beyond the far east end of our school building. Any cars that stop beyond that point will prevent everyone else on Toronto from using the loop at the end of the street to turn around a leave. Thank you, in advance, for adhering to this request. Grade 3/4's get into the voyageur spirit! Our Grade 3/4 classes headed into Winnipeg this part week to take part in Festival du Voyageur activities. The students participated in a workshop on indigenous drumming, did some tobogganing, and went back in time to 1812 and visited Fort Gibraltar. Thank you to all the volunteers and staff who made this opportunity possible. Our students had a great time! GREY CUP VISITS MORRIS SCHOOLMorris School was lucky enough to be one of the schools to have the Grey Cup visit. A number of students and staff made their way to the MPR to view the trophy and have their picture taken with it. It's the first time in 29 years the Cup has been through Manitoba, so a large percentage of the people in our building were not around. Morris School students look to the future! This past week our Senior Years' students participated in a number of open houses and presentations hosted by a number of post-secondary institutions. Thanks to Mrs. Edel, our students were able to tour Red River College, the Universities of Winnipeg and Manitoba, as well as take part in a SET (Science, Engineering, Technology) Day at the University of Manitoba. Our students were able to see, touch & feel, and ask questions about programs of interest so they are better able to make decisions and set goals as it pertains to their post-secondary careers! Way to go, MAV's! Pink Shirt Day - February 26Kids Caring for Kids will be having a Pink Shirt Day Fundraiser on Wednesday, February 26th during the noon hour. We will be selling baking and candy bags. We are also encouraging everyone to wear Pink! Pink Shirt Day is a worldwide day of bullying prevention that has its roots in Nova Scotia. It is a day when people come together by wearing pink shirts to school or work to show they are against bullying. The focus for 2020 is "lift each other up." Thank you, in advance, for your support. Entertainment & Dessert Night - a huge hit!Our Concert Band students hosted an Entertainment and Dessert night this past Wednesday. The audience packed the theatre in anticipation of some entertaining performances and tasty desserts. We believe both goals were met! The Band trip fundraiser allowed our Morris School students to showcase their talents, bring our school community together, and raise some funds for the Concert Band's trip to Moose Jaw in May. The school would like to thank our parents who supplied the delicious desserts, the concert band students for setting up, serving, and cleaning up after the event, Mr. Dyck & Mr. Zinn for overseeing the set up and clean up, our local businesses for donating items for the silent auction prizes, and for the community members who purchased tickets to watch the show! We also thank the performers for having the courage to showcase their talents during the evening. Without you, we wouldn't have a show. Finally, we thank Ms. Demond for orchestrating such a great event for our school. She has definitely brought a great deal of positivity and energy to our band program. We appreciate it. Way to go, MAV's!! A tribute to Mr. MaddocksMr. Maddocks, our former Senior Years Art teacher who passed away in January, has been honoured by the Festival du Voyageur. Mr. Maddocks was part-time talented Morris School Art Teacher and part-time entrepreneur, graphic artist, professional photographer. One of his clients was the Festival du Voyageur. Mr. Maddocks was also a participant in the Festival as a snow sculptor. He was treasured by the Festival as much as he was at Morris School. We miss him dearly, but we appreciate the Festival paying tribute Mr. Maddocks in such a tasteful manner and creative way. It fit Mr. Maddocks to a "T!" Thank you to Mrs. Christelle Edel for capturing the tribute. kindergarten registration continues...Kindergarten registration packages available for the 2020-2021 school year. One day our temperatures can reach close to zero and the next day, we have somewhere between a -35 to -40 wind chill factor. We would encourage all of our staff and students to dress appropriately for the weather. We had one of our students learn the hard way this week and they have allowed us to tell their story with the hope of helping other students. Our Morris School student walked to school this past week during one of the colder days. They had some exposed skin between the bottom of their pant legs and the top of their shoes/socks. The walk to school for this student was approximately 15 minutes. So...it doesn't take long for frostbite to occur. Please cover up and wear layers to ensure you are ready for changes in weather than can occur this time of the year. tasty way to remember the phases of the moonOur Grade 5/6’s used Oreo cookies to illustrate the phases of the moon. A tasty learning session! collections help with connections in math!Grade 3-4s were busy “counting collections” this week. This practises one to one counting, organizing numbers to easily show the amount, and skip counting. At the same time it helps build number sense. The Mavericks qualified for the Consolation Final and played a close and hard fought game against Carman. The girls got within four but couldn't complete the comeback, losing 51-40. The boys were entered into a tough pool, losing games to the Gimli Lakers and the host, Carman Cougars. That placed them in the 5th place game against the Northlands Parkway Nighthawks. The Valley Leader didn't report the score of the 5th place game, so we'll have to assume it was a barn burner!! In Zone 4 action, our boys are having a good season, with a 1-1 record. They are looking sharp in new uniforms! A Big THANK YOU goes out to Pat Schmitke and Morris Bigway Foods for partnering with Morris School on a fundraiser.
