Morris school attends career symposiumThis past Tuesday, a bus load of Morris School students attended the Rotary Career Symposium at the Winnipeg Convention Centre. According to the Rotary Career Symposium website, the symposium was created to showcase leading industries, employment and educational opportunities in Manitoba and beyond, the Rotary Career Symposium is a unique event to help discover your career possibilities! From Aerospace to Law, Trades to Government, Hospitality to Technology, more than 185 Exhibit booths and 30 speaker sessions are included in the two-day event. Featuring both business and educational leaders to help you to update your career profile, it’s the largest and most comprehensive event of its kind in Canada. Early reviews from the Morris School students suggest the Symposium accomplished that goal. Track & Field Our Track & Field team will be having an informational meeting on Thursday this week (March 21) for all Grade 7-12 students who are interested in hearing more about the Maverick Track & Field program. Wrestling The inaugural season for our Maverick wrestling program wrapped up this weekend at West Kildonan Collegiate. The 2019 Provincial Championships started on Friday with our U10 and U13 wrestlers. The older group (U16 and U19) of Mavericks competed Saturday. As we've come accustomed to, the Mavericks continued to improve and bring home some hardware. Alexis W and Kaylee B are provincial champions in their respective weight classes. Rocky T. and Damian E-S were silver medalists. Alesei B, Ethan F, Tyson F, Emma K, Lucas T-D, Cody D, and Abigail M finished the day earning bronze medals. Way to go, MAV's! Cotton Candy Sale/FundraiserWith the cancellation of the Grade 5/6 Floor Hockey Tournament this past Friday, someone left the Cotton Candy machine on! The plan was to sell the Cotton Candy in the canteen on Friday with the goal or raising money for the upcoming Grade 5/6 field trips. A letter will be sent out to parents to pre-order their cotton candy for delivery on Friday, March 22. Volunteer parents and students will also be setting up two separate stations on Friday for students to purchase. Concert Band performs at Optimist FestivalThe Morris School Blog was remiss in reporting on the happenings of our Morris School Concert Band. The Senior Concert Band participated in the Winnipeg Optimist Festival on February 21. They performed two selections: Reflections and An Irish Legend. Thank you to the family and friends who were in attendance for their performance. One of the family members commented afterwards that while Reflections was being performed, it reminded her of a Disney movie, when Cinderella was dressed in her beautiful gown and dancing at the ball. We would like to thank the members of the Senior Concert Band students, led by Mrs. Heather Penno, for representing our school so well! Spirit Week - March 11 to March 15Morris School Spirit Week has been moved up a week. We will update the K-6 group on their colours for Thursday as soon as possible. More information will also be forthcoming in the next 24-48 hours about the MAV's/Sports Day on Friday. Mr. Watson will email all the information to students, parents, and staff as well as post information in the Instagram and Twitter pages. Morris Mavericks - provincial champions!!Fresh off a Zone 4 championship, the Morris Mavericks left a packed gym pep rally headed to Cartwright to participate in the 2019 AA MHSAA Provincial Hockey Championships. The Mavericks finished their pool play undefeated with wins over the Mountain Mustangs and the Killarney Raiders. Cody Clark led the Mavericks on the ice with 10 points in two games (that's not a typo)! Justin Keck wasn't far behind with 7 points. Sean Coulombe and Sean Penner both earned wins in goal during pool play. The above success earned the Mavericks a trip to the semi-finals against their Zone 4 rival, Pembina Tigers. The Mavericks survived a spirited contest, taking the semi-final 3-2. The semi-final win put our Mavericks one step away from their goal, but the Hamiota Huskies stood in their way. The Mavericks were up to the test as Keck stepped up again, pacing the Mavericks with two goals. Sean Penner turned away all but one shot, to help the Morris Mavericks earn the 2018/19 AA MHSAA Hockey Championship! Morris School would like to congratulate and thank the team, volunteer coaches (led by Mr. Barry Lewis), managers, and parents for their great contribution to the school. Movie Night...the third!!What a great Event - Thank you, Winnipeg Jets!Morris School was the beneficiary of the immense resources of the True North Sports and Entertainment Group on Tuesday. The Winnipeg Jets, Manitoba Moose, and Project 11 came to town and had blanketed our school with activities, information, giveaways, entertainment, and a ton of fun! The day started with our K to 4 students participating in Yoga sessions as well as classroom presentations from the Project 11 staff. Project 11 is designed to help support students and teachings in bringing mental health awareness, along with positive coping skills into their lives. Teachers were left with resources and access to the full Project 11 curriculum with the invitation to use as much of it as they see fit. The K-4 group was also treated to a pizza lunch with Mick E. Moose! The next portion of the day featured two presentations from Mr. Craig Heisinger. "Zinger" is the Winnipeg Jets Senior Vice President & Director of Hockey Operations, and Assistant General Manager, as well as the Manitoba Moose General Manager. More importantly, for our context, Zinger was a friend to Rick Rypien. Project 11 was created in honour of Zinger’s close friend, Rick Rypien and his desire to help kids by offering mental health education and support. Zinger will share his heartfelt story about his friendship with Rypien and the message that is being carried on through Project 11. Well...Zinger helped to keep Rypien legacy going with two engaging presentations to our 9-12 and 5-8 students. Our day continued with former Moose and Jets, Derek Meech and Mark Stuart, worked with our Hockey Academy students and then our Provincial Champion, Morris Mavericks, with some on ice work. The day concluded with over 500 fans attending the finale of the Jets' Town Takeover with the livestream event of the Winnipeg Jets vs the Tampa Bay Lightning. Despite the result (Jets downed 5-2), the atmosphere and the community building opportunity was a complete hit. On behalf of Morris School and its community, we would like to thank the True North Sports & Entertainment group from visiting our school. It's an event we will remember! MAV's Create Change - fundraiser!Mavs Create Change will be selling hot chocolate in front of the library on Tuesday from 12:00-12:45. Cups are $1 each and include marshmallows. Proceeds will go towards providing clean drinking water for an impoverished village in a developing country. Mavericks athletics this week...Badminton For those racquet court enthusiasts, our badminton season begins this week. We encourage interested Grade 7 or 8 students to come on Monday and Wednesday at 3:30. Grade 9 to 12 students are welcome on Tuesday and Thursday at 3:30. If badminton isn't your "thing," there is information on beach volleyball, spring soccer, as well as spring break curling and volleyball camps can be found on the bulletin board outside the gym. Wrestling No Limits - Girls in trades dayRepresentatives from Morris School accompanied by Mrs. Laurie Edel attended the No Limits Girls in Trades Day hosted by Shevchenko School in Vita. The Borderland School Division published this following to describe the event: The Red River Technical Vocational Area (RRTVA), in partnership with Triple R Community Futures, hosted a girls in trades day called "No Limits for Girls in Trades" for approximately fifty Grade 8 girls from three school divisions including Red River Valley, Border Land, and Scolaire Franco-Manitobaine. Hands on projects included cutting shapes with a plasma cutter, welding, and using a virtual welder. The goal of the afternoon was to introduce girls to non-traditional career choices. Our K-4 students will have yoga sessions, in class lessons, and a pizza party with Mick E. Moose. Our 5-8 students will hear from Moose General Manager, Craig Heisinger and his engaging Project 11 presentation regarding the importance of mental health. Our Grade 9-12's will be hearing from Mr. Heisinger as well. In the afternoon, our Hockey Academy students will be skating with Jets alumni. Our Zone 4 Champion, Morris Mavericks, will also have an opportunity to learn from former NHL'ers. At 5:30 p.m. the entire town is invited to the Morris MultiPlex for a viewing party where the Winnipeg Jets vs. Tampa Bay Lightning away game will be broadcast on a big screen. The Jets will bring the home game atmosphere to the event, complete with Mick E. Moose; the voice of the Winnipeg Jets, Jay Richardson; prizing courtesy of the Jets and Moose; and Jet Dogs for purchase. We encourage all Morris School community members to make their way to the Multiplex on Tuesday evening for what has the making for a great evening! Grade 9's head to the BIOlab!Mr. Stevenson's Grade 9 class made the trip into Winnipeg to take part in a hands on lessons at the Youth BIOlab at the St. Boniface Hospital Albrechtsen Research Centre. The BIOlab is a space for students and teachers to explore and experience real biomedical science in a world-class research centre. The students got to experience the process of removing a pig heart valve, stripping the pig cells from the fibroblast 'structure' and exploring the possibility of being able to use it to regrow a new valve for human transplant with the patient's own cells in the near future. HOT Dog DAy - the "redo!"Let's try this again...Our Parent Advisory Council WAS planning our first Hot Dog lunch on Wednesday, February 27, but we lost our power on Tuesday to set the schedule "off-kilter!" We're trying it again this Wednesday (March 6).
