Town Clean up - earth day (after the fact)With the weather on Earth Day 2023 (April 22) not being conducive to this event, our student leadership group planned a Town Clean Up event yesterday. The entire school headed out, took an area of the town, nd did their best to beautify the town by collecting garbage. A lot of garbage was cleaned up and the community looks great! Way to Go, MAV's! central honour band experienceLast Friday and Saturday, ten Morris School band students were selected to participate in the Central Region Honour Band hosted at Carman Collegiate. Erin Hamblin and Cody Dueck represented Morris in the Junior Honour Band, and Emilie Jashyn, Whaine Villanueva, Danya Edel, Mikayla Wiebe, Ryan Dueck, Ginger Jorgenson, Bethany Wiebe, and Katie McLachlan were in the Senior Honour Band. These students spent two full days working with over 160 other high achieving musicians across the region, and put on a very impressive concert under the direction of two sought after music educators, Alexis Silver and Graydon Cramer. The students met new friends, grew as musicians, and made some beautiful music together. Congratulations, MAVS! grade 3/4 m take a special trip to the library!During the week of April 30th to May 6th Canadian authors, illustrators and storytellers visited schools, libraries, community centres and bookstores across Canada. Author Linda Trinh visited the Morris Public Library on May 1st and the Grade 3/4 class had the privilege of meeting her and listening to her read from one of her books. Grade 11 Canadian History podcast projectThe Grade 11 Canadian History class this semester created a podcast series that celebrates the unique events, people and inventions that exemplify what it means to be Canadian. Each episode is student-driven and focuses on a topic that they believe is the most important in Canadian history. The goal was to share our voices and help us gain a greater understanding of our history. Congrats to Ms. Epler (student teacher candidate and the Gr 11 Canadian History class on their work! It was an instructional discussion combined with the history of bannock and its importance in history and our indigenous people. Our students and staff were hands on with their learning while they listened to stories. We appreciate the enrichment opportunity that Cookem Daisey provided our students. Miigwech! grade 5/6s honour red dress dayMrs. Siemens honoured Red Dress Day on Friday by conducting a lesson on changing the language we use around not only women but everyone. For example, instead of describing people as pretty or handsome, students use words like strong and confident. Mrs. Siemens asked her students to write some of the words they came up with on the dresses. The class hung the dresses up on display on the fence in the outdoor class off Hwy 23. Way to Go, MAVs! mavericks attend divisional middle years fairOn Thursday, May 4th, six students from grades 5 to 8 had a busy day in Rosenort at the Middle Years Tech Fair. They experimented with GPS, VR, Broadcasting and drones. Students learned a lot, showed their positive Maverick attitudes and had fun. are you calling me an idiom?!?This week, Mr. Moore Gr 5/6 class learned about idioms and the difference between Literal and Figurative. Here's a look at some examples! Way to Go, MAVs! mavericks athletics updateRugby Mr. Antoski and his JV Rugby team are ready to hit the field in their first game action this week. They play on Wednesday at Maple Grove Rugby Park. Games are at 4:45 (vs. St. Pauls) and 6:05 (vs. St. Johns). Good Luck Boys! Track and Field Mr. Lehmann has our high school athletes working hard in preparation for their first track meet on May 16 in Selkirk. It is not too late to join! Boys Spring Volleyball Gr 9-12 boys wanting to freshen up their skills can talk to Mrs. Leflar about getting some extra reps in on Wed and Thurs evenings. Gr 5-8 students hold tight, your opportunity is coming. save the date: may 17 - movie nightThe athletic department will be hosting a fundraiser MOVIE NIGHT on Wednesday, May 17th for any K-6 students. Admission will cost $3 and there will be a canteen with food and snacks available. Teachers will have information/permission slips for students this week. what can withstand the big bad wolf?The grade 1/2 classes explored materials and objects through a Three Little Pig inquiry. They learned about different materials that were strong, flexible, waterproof and absorbent through experiments and building activities. After they had gathered the information required, they planned and created a house for an animal that would withstand the big bad wolf trying to blow it down. They were all successful and had a lot of fun testing their houses. thanks from the Red River Wellness CommitteeThe Red River Wellness Committee would like to take a moment to thank those members of the Morris School Community who helped with the most recent Smile Cookie Campaign. To all those who stepped up to pre-order cookies, decorate cookies, make donations, or pick up a cookie with your morning coffee...thank you! As of Friday, May 5, the Morris Tim Hortons location was #3 in the province for money raised. This money will go a long way to reach our fundraising goal. Construction starts this summer.
