exams this week!Well...exams are just a couple days away for our Grades 9-12 students. There will not be formal classes for these students during the day. They are free to come to school in time for their exam and leave immediately after. There will be quiet places to study for those students who are unable to leave after their exams. Students not writing exams are expected to respect those who are or those who are studying and the younger students who still have regular classes. We encourage all of our students who have exams to prepare well in advance, reach out to their teachers when they have questions, get some good sleep and eat well over the next few weeks. A well-prepared, well-rested student will do as well as they are supposed to do if they have done this. report cards via powerschoolOur parents should have all received something similar to the following letter before the winter break... Eggs will "jump" from 6-inch intervals until they crack/scramble or the structure fails. A well-prepared, well-rested student will do as well as they are supposed to do if they have done this. exam study tipsThe following excerpt from Kidshelphone.ca summarizes some very good tips for students preparing for exams... It’s common to feel stressed before taking a test, especially if you don’t feel prepared. Keeping up good study habits will help you remember things at test time so you can earn better grades. Here are some study tips to help you prepare for a test: 1. Start early: start studying several days before the test/exam. You’ll have more time to learn and remember what you need to know and the information will stay in your long-term memory for final exams. Cramming the night before will increase your stress and only puts the information in your short-term memory, so you’ll likely forget and have to relearn it at the end of the term. 2. Stay positive: remember that it’s within your ability to do well on the test/exam. Try not to put too much pressure on yourself. 3. Set priorities: spend most of your study time on what’s most important for the test/exam. If you’re not sure what that is, ask your teacher. If your teacher has spent a lot of time on something in class, it’s probably important to know. 4. Make study sheets: try to summarize the main ideas in a few points. Make a single page of notes and review it several times. 5. Get help: ask your teacher to explain any material that you don’t understand. You can also ask a friend or classmate for help. 6. Go to the review class: many teachers review the important material during the class before a test or exam. It’s a good idea to attend and take as many notes as you can. This is also your chance to ask questions. Remember: study as best as you can and get a good night’s sleep before the exam! We wish all of our students well as they prepare. We can accept cash, cheque, debit, and credit cards. Our school community contributed their favourite recipes to this project. Enjoy a good meal and support our fundraising endeavour. Thank you! A 'new year' in kindergartenThis week in Kindergarten they learned about what a 'new year' means. They talked about how it always happens in January and figured out what year they will be graduating high school (2036). After the lesson, the students made crowns to celebrate the new year! They also read the book The Magical Yet, a story about how sometimes we feel frustrated by what we can't do...YET! The book taught them that whether you are a child or an adult, there are things that we haven't learned...YET, but can learn! After they read the story, they talked about things that they CAN DO and things that they can't do YET! Students chose one thing to write down that they would like to learn in 2024 and drew a picture to go with it! Happy New Year! mavericks athletic updateBasketball The crazy weather this week led to the cancellation of games on Wednesday and Thursday nights for all of our teams. This weekend our Junior Varsity boys host their home tournament. The Boys play at 3:30 on Friday and then 10:00 and 3:30 on Saturday. Next week our Varsity teams host Rosenort (Boys on Tuesday at 6:00pm, Girls on Thursday at 6:00pm). The Varsity Girls also travel to Gimli to compete in the Gimli High School Tournament. Wrestling A few of our Mavericks wrestlers are competing at a tournament in Winnipeg on Sunday. Good luck! Introducing MOnday mentors!Grades 7-12 students interested in basketball are invited to share the gym on Mondays at lunch to start our Monday Mentors series. This is an opportunity for grades 7-8 students to work on their skills and for high school students to further develop their leadership skills and make a difference in our school community. grade 7/8 Tech class pass on THEIR knowledgeThe 7-8 Technology Class ended their unit by teaching grade 5-6 students how to use virtual reality headsets. Students learned how to prepare their play area, set safety boundaries, and then got to experience a wild roller coaster ride right in the classroom! Since the older students can't see what the younger students can see in the headset, it's a great communication challenge. Thanks to the grade 7-8 "teachers" who did a great job, and the students who participated! The VR headsets are scheduled to return, so more students should get a chance soon. robotics club updateThe Morris Robotics Team's visit from the Morris & District Chamber of Commerce was covered in the Southeast Journal.
