homeroom placement process - grades 1 to 8It will soon be time for our teachers and student services staff to meet to discuss the students who will make up the Grades 1-8 homerooms for the next school year. Students in Kindergarten, Grades 2, 4, and 6 will be moving to new homerooms next year. IF you have some feedback regarding your student's preference to be with another student (singular), please forward those requests on to Mr. Watson via email. Meetings will start the week of May 21st, so please submit your requests by Friday, May 17th. We will do our best to accommodate requests, but they cannot be guaranteed. We will not entertain teacher requests as several factors go into deciding what homeroom a student will be placed in so we can achieve as much balance and harmony in all of our homeroom classes as possible. Save the Date: welcome to kindergartenthe weather brings outdoor buddy reading!5/6K learn by doingGrade 5/6K took a journey back in time and put themselves in the shoes (or boots!) of WW1 soldiers writing a letter home. A little bit of crafting took our letters from 2024 to 1914! Grade 5/6K learned about and honoured the lives of MMIWG2S+ by taking part in the NWAC Faceless Dolls project for Red Dress Day. Each of the dolls is uniquely different and beautiful to represent the many Indigenous women who have become victims, students chose to display them in our classroom window to spread awareness of this issue. 7/8s keeping afloat!Miss Adams’ 7/8 class took to the science lab last week to complete a design project focused on buoyancy. The students were provided with packages of mainly recyclable materials with the challenge of creating a boat/invention that would be buoyant, balanced, and able to withstand weight. The students worked hard and came up with many creative and successful inventions which were able to hold as many as 100 quarters! Later on in the week, the 7/8s were able to test the viscosity of several different fluids, including water, olive oil, ketchup, barbeque sauce, dish soap, and laundry detergent, by pouring them down a decline and determining their rate of flow. In this lab, the students were also asked to consider the adhesive properties of honey and the effects of heat at the molecular level. Morris Visits Middle Years FairOn Friday, students from Grade 5/6 and Grade 7/8 visited Ecole Heritage Immersion School as they hosted the Middle Years Fair. The theme for the fair this year was Mental Health Awareness! Students participated in a variety of activities such as bracelet making, dancing, making food and interacting with animals. As students rotated through stations, they had conversations about how mental health affects everyone and how to keep their minds healthy. Thank you to Myla, Max, Lucy, Aliyah, Sapphira, Carter, Keira and Austin for being great representatives of Morris School! mavericks athletic updateTrack & Field Our high school track & field team heads to Selkirk on Tuesday for their first meet of the season. The Broncos proved to be a formidable foe, defeating the Mavericks, and sending us to the third-place game against the Glenlawn Lions. The game was tighter, but the Lions scored more points than the Mavericks'. The good news...? The Mavericks were told they still earned a chance to play at halftime of the Bombers' Pre-Season game on May 31st against the fourth-place team on Tuesday night's division. Families will receive full details, including fact sheets in an email. The Town did add, "Please note that the Town of Morris is scheduled for upgrades to the reservoir and pumping station on May 8th, 2024, which have the potential to introduce contaminants into the water distribution system, therefore a precautionary boil water advisory is being issued beginning at 7:00 on May 8th, 2024 to ensure the protection of public health." We would advise all students and staff at Morris School to fill and bring their own water bottles to school until we are told it is safe to resume drinking the water at our school. three mavericks put their empathy into actionSally-Anne, Sophie, and Willow had an idea. They felt that the school should have a bake sale and that the proceeds from the bake sale should go to our local food bank. So they walked into Mr. Watson's office and made a proposal. After some logistical discussions, the plan launched into a bake sale this past week. After all the baked goods were purchased, these awesome Mavericks will be donating $300 to the Morris Food Bank. Thank you to these students, their friends, their families, and Mrs. Skoglund for making sure the event happened without any glitches. We are so proud of the initiative shown by these three students as well as their genuine care and concern for other people! Way to Go, MAVs! mr. funk visits the schoolThe Grade 9 Canada in the Contemporary World class had a visit from Town Councillor, Dave Funk on Friday afternoon. The class has been studying democracy and governance in Canada, including topics such as the purpose of government, the levels and branches of government, Canada’s Constitution, the roles involved with different positions in government, and the division of power and responsibilities between levels. The visit helped reinforce ideas about which tasks and responsibilities are handled by the Town of Morris, and how small town government is structured. It also provoked some interesting questions and discussions about by-laws, economic development, volunteer boards, and key qualities for someone in any leadership role. The class would like to thank Mr. Funk for taking time out of his busy schedule to come in and share his experiences as a Councillor! Kudos to Ms. Adams for contacting Mr. Funk to bring his perspective to her students. we remember benny!Have you heard the delightful sounds echoing through our school grounds? We are thrilled to introduce a new addition to our early years playground: Benny's Bells! Named in loving memory of the late Benny Loewen, these colourful rainbow chimes symbolize joy and togetherness. On April 30th, Benny's family joined us to dedicate these enchanting bells that will resonate through our playground for years to come. As we ring in this new chapter, let's honour Benny's memory and embrace the legacy of joyful noise he leaves behind. A heartfelt thank you goes out to Mr. Hiker, Kathryn Friesen the welding shop's talented students, and Jablonski Electric and Envirotech for their contributions to transporting and painting the bells. We also extend our gratitude to Mr. Dyck for his expertise in installing them, and all the students that have been playing on them and using them respectfully. Special appreciation is owed to Mr. Watson and our dedicated ACCESS staff for their unwavering support in turning this dream into a reality. mavericks athletic updateTrack and Field Students can still join high school track and field. Practices are Tuesdays from 3:30-5:30 and/or Thursdays at lunch. The first track meet is in Selkirk on May 14th. Rugby The rugby program has doubled in size. Last year's league finalists in JV Boys Rugby 7s have blossomed into a JV 7s and Varsity 7s team. The Varsity Boys experienced their first games in program history and came away with two wins (32-0 vs Windsor Park; 19-0 vs Oak Park). The boys continue their games every Monday. This week's games see both the JV and Varsity teams play. All games are held at Maple Grove Rugby Park at the corner of St. Mary's Road and the Perimeter Highway.
Girl's Flag Football Week 5 action in the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Girls High School Football League saw our Mavericks needing to win their first of two games to qualify for the Wednesday night, four-team playoffs. Our Maverick defence held strong while the offence did enough to win the game, earning a 12-6 victory over the Glenlawn Lions #2 team. The next game came right down to the wire, with our girls holding a tight one-point lead up until the very last play of the game. The CSLR Renards scored a touchdown, earning a 26-21 victory against the Mavericks. The good news...? Our Mavericks are in the playoffs. We are one of four teams in our 10-team division to earn the right to be a playoff team and play one more week. Semi-final games this Wednesday are at 5:20, with the championship and third-place games being held almost immediately after at 6:15. The Mavericks play the JH Bruns Broncos in their semi-final game. Thanks so much to Joanna for her time and also to Dianne Ali for hosting. band students are "honoured"This past Friday, April 26th and Saturday, April 27th, saw fourteen Morris School Band students undertake a musical feat - the annual Central Region Honour Band - hosted in Carman, at Carman Collegiate. These students worked tirelessly leading up to and through the weekend, culminating in a glorious final performance on Saturday afternoon. The weekend was truly inspiring; the students made friends with and learned alongside other student musicians from across the region, and had the privilege to learn from a number of esteemed Music educators from the Central Region and beyond.
