grades 1-4 experience agriculture on wheels!Nutrien Ltd. is teaching the next generation about growing healthy plants and where food comes from through Seed Survivor. In partnership with Agriculture in the Classroom -Manitoba, Nutrien’s Seed Survivor display visited our school. Seed Survivor is a free, curriculum-based learning experience that encourages children to understand what makes plants grow. The Agriculture on Wheels classroom provided students an opportunity to compete as virtual farmers, dig for real fossils (and learn how they relate to agriculture), and even plant a sunflower seed to take home and grow. Way to Go, MAV's Plant sale a success!During a September Math class, one of our students had the great idea to fundraise for an apple tree to plant outside the ACCESS classroom. This week, thanks to the generous support of many students, staff and community members during their plant sale, the ACCESS class surpassed their fundraising goals! In addition to covering the cost of an apple tree and their upcoming field trips to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and Lil’ Steps Wellness Farm, they were also able to purchase a rhubarb plant and some much needed equipment to support their gardening program. Special thanks to everyone who donated their time, money and plants to help them reach their goal! softball and softball the sequelOn Thursday, May 18th the 5/6's went to Lowe Farm for the annual softball tournament. They played hard and were troopers in the rain and cold weather. The following day a different group of students and a different weather pattern traveled to Lowe Farm. On Friday, May 19, a great day was had at the divisional softball tournament by all of our Grades 7/8 students. The boys went undefeated in round robin play before coming from behind to beat Lowe Farm in the final. The girls started the day off slow (while still having a great time) and came back from being down 7-0 to beat Rosenort in the Consolation Final. Way to Go, MAV's! mavericks athletics updateHigh School Track & Field Our track & field athletes got off to a great start at their first meet in Selkirk this past week. This week they to Stonewall for the Interlake Invitational before competing in the Zone Championship at the end of May. High School Rugby In their second week matchup the boys lost a close one to St. Pauls 10-5 before taking care of Sturgeon Heights 25-5. They currently sit in second place at 3-1 and face Kelvin at 5:05 and St. Pauls Maroon (again) at 5:45. BBQ, Sod-Turning, Raffle draw, & Jazz Band? Wowchemistry and ice cream on your long weekendLast week the grade 12 chemistry class applied their knowledge of colligative properties to make ice cream. It is a simple activity that you can do at home on a hot Victoria day long weekend. Just follow the instructions below. Mason's Pro Tip: Double bag the milk or else your ice cream might taste like ocean! speaking of science - 7/8s go solar!The grade 7/8S science class is holding their "Solar Water Heater" competition Tuesday afternoon. Students have been working on their homemade solar water heaters. The design that heats 500ml of water the most in one hour will win! Students can use common items available at school or home, but cannot use sources of energy other than the sun. This is a part of the Particle Theory of Matter: Heat Unit. Students have had two classes to test their designs and make changes based on their results.
