pre-school & kindergarten INFO NightI love to read month off to a flying start!This week our school jumped straight into I Love To Read month with both feet! Books are being read, daily themes are being highlighted, and competitions to see how many books we can read are well underway. We would like to thank all the guest readers (Mandy from Bounce99, Mr. Funk, Mr. Wiebe, Nick & Noah Hallett from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers) who took some time out of their day to either stop by the school or hop on a Google Meet to read to our students. By modeling a love for reading, you inspire our students...thank you! We also thank Mrs. DeKezel for leading in the library as well as Mrs. Smith for her donation of talents and time in the form of her EXCELLENT cookies. We encourage our students to keep going! Grades 9-12 settle some grade wars this week!This week our Student Leadership Group hosted "Grade Wars" for the Grades 9-12 students. A ton of fun and school/grade spirit was had as our students organized activities such as an obstacle course, musical chairs, word hunt, speed eating, dodgeball and tug of war. Each grade did a great job showing their teamwork and school spirit. No $50 or $100 bills will be accepted because of the recent counterfeit activities in surrounding communities. semester 2 is underway - timetable adjustmentsMs. Denny is working hard on completing all the necessary changes to high school semester two timetables. If your child has made adjustments to their timetable you will likely have received an attendance notification this week stating your child was absent from class. All attendance will be adjusted to reflect the timetable changes and Ms. Denny hopes to have these changes sorted out by Monday morning. mavericks attend provincial seminarOn Thursday February 9th, six Maverick students went to a Safe Sport conference hosted by Manitoba High School Athletics Association and Sport Manitoba. They were joined by two leaders and pioneers in the Safe Sport movement: Sandra Kirby and Allyson Forsyth. Both of these speakers are ex Olympian’s who are fighting to ensure that sports can be a safe and enjoyable place for ALL! Their message was very powerful and real. These six Maverick students were great representatives of our school and community, and have gained valuable insight on this important topic. mavericks athletics updateBasketball The regular season is winding down for our Maverick Basketball Teams. With losses in Carman and Rosenort this week, the Varsity Girls finish 4th in league play and head to Rosenort next Thursday for the Zone Semi Final. They are hosting a 4-team tournament this weekend here in Morris. Game times for the girls are 3:30 on Friday (vs. Rosenort) and 10:00am (vs. Immanuel Christian) and 3:30 (vs. Shevchenko) on Saturday. It is a busy week ahead for the Varsity Boys, who need to defeat RVS on Monday and Westpark on Tuesday in order to qualify for playoffs. The JV Boys currently sit in 3rd place and will play their final league game of the season on Tuesday at Westpark. Hockey The Mavericks have wrapped up their regular season! The Mavs finished with a 15-7-2 record which is good for 32 points. The Mavs will finish either 3 or 4 in the league standings (depending how teams finish up this weekend). This means that they have home ice advantage for the first round of playoffs! The Mavs first home playoff game will be next Wednesday 7:30 pm at the Morris Multiplex (February 15). Come out to support the team in their playoff push. Go Mavs Go. grade 5 music - ahem, we mean school of Rock!The Grade 5 music class continues to transform into the School of Rock! They have been working on becoming multi-instrumentalists through The Beatles song, "Let it Be". Here are a few photos of their daily jam sessions. a night of entertainmentUpcoming Event: On Wednesday, February 22, 2023 the band program is hosting an “Entertainment & Dessert Night” at 7pm in the music room at Morris School. It is a band program & Edmonton trip fundraiser which will showcase the talents of Morris students from kindergarten to grade 12! The Jazz Band is performing, as well as any K-12 students who wish to audition and participate in the show. There will be coffee, tea, and juice served as well as dessert at the intermission. There will also be a silent auction at the show. All students and families are encouraged (but not required) to attend! Tickets are to be purchased in advance from any high school band student, or Mrs. Zimmerman, and are $8/adult and $5/child (free for performers). Limited tickets are available, so purchase your tickets in advance to guarantee entry. 5/6 Siemens speaks to a neurosurgeonThis past week, Mrs. Siemens' Grade 5/6 class welcomed Dr. Gomez virtually come in and talk to our class about what a neurosurgeon does as a wrap up to talking about The Nervous System in science. Way to Go, MAV's! red river u9 girls invite you to the jamboree!Some Morris School Mavericks will exchange their Maverick horse for a Red River Wild horse next weekend to host their playoff Jamboree tournament. All games listed in the schedule below will be held at the Morris Multiplex. Students from Morris School include Madison Saurette, Emma Peters, Jillian Hamblin, Kaydence Ewbank, Codie Reckseidler, Piper Peters, Mila Berg and Violet Collette. There also athletes from St. Jean, Dominion City and Emerson. There will be a silent auction occuring Saturday with some fantastic Prizes including a big screen TV, lots of prizes for kids and hockey lovers.
