every child matters! From Kindergarten to Grade 12, our school was proud to remember and honour those children who attended residential schools in Canada as well as those who didn't make it home. In the week that ended with a National Truth & Reconciliation Day, our students watched videos, heard from guest presenters, and actively participated in activities that allowed them to learn about the past as well as how to proceed as treaty people in the future. Our students, staff, and guests are to commended for their openness this week. When we are open to growth, we have the ability to be empathetic and affect our own mindset. Way to go, MAV's! Below is just one example of what some of our student experiences this week... The grade 1/2 classes have been learning about the importance of Orange Shirt day through the story of Phyllis Webstad. Our students have engaged in thoughtful and caring conversations, placed an orange ribbon along the fence of the school yard, painted orange rocks with hopeful words and messages on them to show we care as well as wearing orange shirts to school. We are very proud of our students' engagement throughout the last 2 weeks and for their caring nature for all children. every child matters in the access classroomThis September the students in our Access classroom are studying the cultural genocide that happened in Canada from 1883-1996, when 150,000 children were stolen from their families and forced to attend re-education centers with the purpose of erasing their Indigenous identities. Investigations across the country have found evidence of more than 1,100 graves on residential school grounds since 2021. In order to move forward in reconciliation, we are learning what everyday life was like for Indigenous children before they were taken to residential schools, and the history of residential schools in Canada. In addition to watching, reading and discussing videos, stories and articles about Indigenous culture, residential schools, and the Indian Act, we participated in a smudge ceremony with Mr. Carbonneau and tied orange ribbons in the shape of a heart on our fence to remember those who never returned. We painted watercolour feathers, made a collaborative poster and various Lego creations and observed Orange Shirt Day by wearing orange, making Three Sisters Soup from the ingredients we grew in our garden and baking some bannock. We will continue to learn about the lasting effects and intergenerational trauma that has resulted from forced assimilation as we continue to study Canadian identity throughout the year. one more day!!!!!School clothing online store is OPEN, but it closes OCTOBER 1st (tomorrow)! Morris School has the privilege of employing over 40 support staff in our school community. The work these dedicated individuals perform on a daily basis enriches the lives of our students and teachers. We could not do what we do if it weren't for them. A few flowers and a piece of cake is not enough to thank them for all they do. IF you ever see one of our support staff in and around our community, please extend a 'THANK YOU!' It is well deserved! maverick athletics updateCross Country: Maverick runners will be competing in the Zone IV meet on Tuesday with the chance to qualify for provincials. Good luck Mavs! grade 9 home ec students sewing up a storm! As a part of their intro to sewing experience, Mrs. Berezowski's Grade 9 Home Ec students are producing product within minutes of learning the basics of sewing. Their first product....? Felt MONSTERS! Just what a 14 year old will cherish for the rest of their lives!! Way to Go, MAV's! outdoor courts set new targetHere's a bit of an update on our major Capital Fundraising Project to build two new outdoor courts on the Morris School grounds. We had raised enough money to get the ground work done this past summer. That was the plan that was in place with the contractor we had selected. However, with the way our spring went, subcontracted tradespeople were unable to get their work done over the summer. They offered to do the work this fall, but with how busy our school is, we've asked to be on the top of the list for the summer of 2023. This will allow us to do the remaining fundraising we require to have enough money to complete the project in one shot instead of working with different phases of completion. We look forward to promoting new fundraising initiatives in the near future. If you would like to donate to the project, please consider making an online donation by click on the following [LINK]. You would need to selected the school (Morris School) and the Initiative (Outdoor Court Refresh & Expansion) and then enter in your amount. Cheques made out to Morris School would also be accepted. All donations are eligible for a tax receipt. Thank you to all who have contributed and for those who will contribute in the future. morris to host special olympics meetingA group of volunteers are hosting Special Olympics MB and they are hoping to target not only potential athletes and volunteers/coaches to this meeting but also families, who have children as young as two years old, to come out and see what this programming has to offer.
