Attn k-12 parents: parent council info MeetingAs you may or may not be aware, Morris School does not have a school-based parent group (parent council). With the hope of changing this, we are hosting a representative from the Manitoba Association of Parent Councils on Thursday, November 30 at 6:30 (band-room/theatre) to provide information on what parent councils are and how the parents of Morris School could start the process of recreating this organization. We invite all interested parents to this presentation. As a school, it is our responsibility to provide information to our school community regarding Parent Advisory Councils. The directive includes... (a) According to the Resource Guide for Manitoba’s Parent Advisory Councils, PACs are created for a reason, and it is important to discuss and decide together what that purpose will be within a school community. The Parent Advisory Council within a school has many functions and roles. Examining this purpose may lead to the development of your PAC mission statement. Some of the areas a PAC might work in include:
(c) Membership into the Morris School PAC include adults interested in the objectives of the PAC who are parents/guardians of children enrolled in the School. These individuals are entitled to and may become a member of the Parent Council upon being elected. Please register by Wednesday, November 29, 2023. u o m hosts inaugural new buffalo gatheringOn Friday, November 17th, five of our Morris Mavericks represented our school at the First New Buffalo Gathering at the University of Manitoba. Students heard about many opportunities available to Indigenous students. They were given the opportunity to talk to each of the U of Manitoba faculty representatives and then go on a tour of two of the U of Manitoba residences. They heard firsthand from Indigenous University students about their journey to post-secondary. One of the student presenters is a residence assistant and later led the residence tour and even allowed all the students to tour their residence room and answered questions about living on campus. Many questions were asked. This was an incredible, eye-opening experience for our students. music program gearing up for performancesgrade 9 & 10 Home ec. giving back!The grade 9 and 10 Home Ec classes are working extremely hard on dog beds. We currently have 14 completely finished and 17 that are in process. We would like to thank everyone for all the donations we have been getting. It has been fantastic! This has been a great way for our students to give back to the community! morris school paint night a masterpiece!Morris School held a Paint Night on Wednesday, in support of Canteen Improvements. A lot of fun was had, with some real masterpieces being created. Stay tuned! mavericks athletic updateVolleyball Our Varsity Girls saw their season end this week with a 4-set loss in Morden. Our Varsity Boys headed to Landmark this weekend for the regional tournament and a chance to qualify for Provincials in Iles Des Chenes. The boys went 2 & 0 to open to the qualifier, beating both William Morton Collegiate (Gladstone) and Prairie Mountain Collegiate (Swan Lake) in two straight sets. The boys failed to qualify automatically after losing to the host Landmark '96ers team but rebounded by defeating William Morton again in the 2 vs 3 play-in game in two straight sets. Provincials run from Thursday, November 30th to Saturday, December 2nd. Good luck to our MAVs! Our JV teams participated in their respective Zone tournaments this Tuesday. The Girls split with Dufferin Christian and Shevchenko to finish 4th in their pool, unfortunately, this did not qualify them for the playoff round. The JV Boys hosted their tournament here in Morris, making it all the way to the final. They battled back and forth with Miami but ultimately fell to them in the final. OUR JV BOYS have punched their ticket to provincials! They head to The Pas this upcoming weekend to take on all the other ten (10) schools that have qualified. Our 7/8's travelled to J.A. Cuddy on Wednesday. The Girls continued their string of tight games, unfortunately, they were on the wrong end this time, falling in 3 sets. The Boys came out on top in their game 3 sets to one. Hockey The Mavs hosted Pembina on Wednesday night. They got off to a slow start but stormed back to take the game 7-3. The Boys head to Steinbach for a tournament this weekend. They lost to Steinbach in their first game but beat St. Thomas Aquinas High School on Friday. Our MAVs beat Fort Frances this morning but came up short against a tough team from Kelvin High School. The loss kept the Mavericks from advancing to the final of the tournament. Basketball High School Girls basketball starts next week with practices on Monday and Tuesday at 3:20. All High School Girls are welcome to attend. Wrestling Wrestling Practices have been delayed. We will begin practicing on Wednesday at 3:30 for Grades 1-6 students (Jr MAVs) and 4:15 for Grades 7-12 students (Sr MAVs). Mini MAVs noon hour practices will begin on November 27. Next week Mavs Hockey hosts GVC on Wednesday at 7:30 and travels to Altona on Friday to play the Aces at 8:00pm. 7/8 Volleyball: Both teams travel to Rosenort on Wednesday and Host Oak Bluff and Lowe Farm here in Morris on Thursday (start time 4:00pm). project 11 trip to a moose game!On November 13, the grades 5s, 7s and 8s travelled to Winnipeg to watch the Moose hockey game as part of Project 11. Mr. Miller encouraged all schools to 'Wear Blue' on Friday. Seeing as we had no classes on Friday, our Mavericks showed up BIG. TIME. on Thursday!
