spirit weekelective forms due before we leave for break!Every year around this time, our guidance counsellor (s) circulate around the school and give presentations on the electives that could be made available for the next school year. Those presentations have happened. The students are then asked to complete an initial elective survey. Several students have already done so. We thank you for taking care of this. Other students have not. We would like this done so we can confirm these choices with parents and guardians after spring break. Once the elective choices are confirmed, we will commence with our timetable-building process. See the gym schedule for this week. Three competitions are scheduled this week, however. First, our grade 7/8 badminton team travel to Lowe Farm to swing their racquets. Then the next two involve the grace and precision of our Morris School Staff. At lunch on Wednesday, our staff take on the students in a game of basketball. Then, if the students haven't had enough of humble pie, the staff is challenging our students to a game of hockey (information below). This should be the last blog of March UNLESS the students pull off any miracles! chess club update! Are you a problem solver or a critical thinker? Do you love strategy games or making new friends? Our experienced members are excellent mentors and are happy to teach you the game of chess! Bring a friend (or two)! Boards are provided, but feel free to bring your own! fishing club competes at provincialsThe Mavericks Fishing Club attended the 1st Annual High School Provincial Ice Fishing Derby on March 12th. Eleven members of the Mavericks fishing club went to Balsam Bay on Lake Winnipeg and were joined by 680 other students from 42 high schools across the province. The day started off frantically, with students literally sprinting across the ice at 9:30 am sharp, to attempt to claim a fishing hole that they thought would produce some fish! At 10 am, a horn sounded and immediately students could begin fishing. Within the first 23 minutes of the derby, 25 fish were caught and measured! The action slowed slightly after this, and in 3.5 hours, a total of 57 fish were caught. Our school was one of the 30 schools to get 'skunked', and unfortunately not catch any fish. But our students still participated and won some random competitions, including; a bare-handed push-up contest, fishing trivia, and a casting accuracy competition. The students enjoyed their time, and we will eagerly look forward to improving our fortunes at next year's provincial derby! A Visit from Mr. Stevenson for Grade 7/8 Science The Grade 7/8 Epler classroom welcomed Mr. Stevenson to our Science class to teach us about Indigenous Knowledge and the Connection to the Land and to cells in our bodies. Students discussed how Indigenous art shows interconnectedness to the land and how our bodies rely on these relationships. Students were able to then work together to build molecules that are used in photosynthesis in our environment. Thank you to Mr. Stevenson for joining us and enriching our knowledge! what time is 5/6k?Students in 5/6K put their knowledge of the scientific method to the test and designed experiments to see if they could tell time using the sun.
