Grade 7/8 Phys Ed serving the communityMr. Lehmann's Grade 7/8 Phys. Ed. class was out serving the community this week AND getting in some good exercise! If you live in & around the school and you are interested in having your driveway cleared, simply leave a shovel out on your property and the students will get it done!! Way to go, MAV's!! Outdoor adventures with the access class!!Mrs. Noel has been guiding our class back through time during our Winter Survival unit. We’re combining Canadian history, ELA, Art and Home Ec. to make things interesting. Our studies have exposed us to the lives of Canada’s First Nations, early explorers, voyageurs and settlers. We enjoy the movies and projects and have had the thrill of combining those with tastes and touches of the past. We nibbled cautiously at the pemmican made of very smoky bacon fat, bison and cranberries. We decided it tasted like dog food but if it was all you had for months on end while you traveled through the bush, you could probably eat it. We also made two different bannock recipes and both were delicious! After re-creating the HBC Coat of Arms and some Metis inspired art we took on the challenge of ice-fishing. We bundled up for the cold windy day and met Mr. Mike Deeley at the river. He graciously drilled 4 holes through the ice and lent us some fishing rods to use. He assured those of us who were nervous that the ice was twenty-two inches thick. Unexpected challenges arose such as outdoor bathrooming and a vehicle that wouldn’t make it back up the river bank after it was suggested we park on the ice to block the wind. Many wonderful people stopped to offer assistance and we’d like to thank Jordan Berezowski, Troy McDougall, Alisha Stroud and her dad as well as the other kind strangers who stopped to help. Eventually we walked back to school and called CAA. We learned a lot and would love to go again. Maybe next time we’ll even catch a fish! Now we are waiting for more snow and looking forward to new projects and adventures including shelter building , fire making (and safety), outdoor first aid, snow sculptures ,tourtière, a visit from a local dog sledder, sash weaving, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. Stay tuned! By Kylie and Alexis calling for the Maverick class of 2034Our school is looking forward to receiving registrations for next year's Kindergarten class! Our school is working on a COVID-19 friendly open house. Please stay tuned for more information. In the meantime, families are welcome to access the Kindergarten registration form by accessing the following link https://morris.rrvsd.ca/for_parents/registration_forms congratulations - Bryce Neustater!!Current Grade 12 student, Bryce Neustater is making plans!! Those plans include a post-secondary education and the continuation of his volleyball experience! As you will read below, Bryce has committed to the Canadian Mennonite University's Blazers Men's Volleyball Program for the 2021-22 school year. We are very excited for Bryce and wish him all the best! Here's a portion of the press release CMU released recently, highlighting their volleyball commits for next year. BRYCE NEUSTATER Neustater left his mark on the Morris boy's volleyball program after helping the Mavericks to their first zone championship in eight years in 2019. The accomplishment garnered the attention of the Manitoba High School Athletics Association as well as Neustater's southern Manitoba high school, who recognized the 6'1 left side as their Athlete of the Week. Neustater would captain his high school program for his Grade 10 and Grade 11 years, but like all high school players from across the province, Neustater lost his senior year to the Covid-19 pandemic. "Bryce is the consummate team player,' said Dulder. "He is the kind of guy that is first in the gym to set up the nets… eager to train and improve as a player. He is a good passer and can play left side or as a middle. He will bring the type of character to our team that I believe will build our team up and add to our already strong cohesion." As a club player, Neustater has spent most of his youth development years with the Junior Pilots program with a brief stop at the 17-u level with Winman Wild. Playing mostly as a middle, Neustater helped the Pilots to back to back silver medals at club provincials in 2018 and 2019. maverick media is ON. the. air!!Our morning announcements are now live-streamed every morning. Way to go, MAV's!! Artist in the school - off to a great start!Emily Granger has been in the school to start working on our three week adventure with Artist in the School sponsored by the Manitoba Arts Council. Each group will produce a spoken word piece about their views on covid (Grades K-2 are singing a song they know), and it will be transferred onto vinyl record. Emily will cut the records in class while they will create album artwork and liner notes to go along with the recording. At the end of the day each group will listen to their recording on a vintage record maker/player. Mrs. Roberge's class shared their experience with the following images. Creative students in concert BandWith the COVID-19 restrictions, Mrs. Zimmerman and her concert band student have had to become creative in Band. Mrs. Zimmerman created an assignment that asked the students to be creative within the concert band world! Students took the project and ran. Some created their own pieces, studied/played music throughout history, or created a TikTok video. Mr. Watson is too cheap to pay for the Weebly version that allows video, so here are some screenshots of their finished pieces. Check out our Instagram account for the videos over the coming week(s).
