I love to read month continues with friendsHow do you “Kick off” your I Love to Read Celebration? With the Bombers, of course! Morris School got off to a great start for I Love to Read month on February 1st with a visit from Winnipeg Blue Bomber players, Patrick Neufeld and Tanner Cadwallader. Neufeld is an offensive lineman and a two-time Grey Cup winner. Cadwallader is a linebacker, a Canadian product of Georgetown, Ontario. Both players chose their own books to read to first the Grade 3-4 students and then the 5-6 students. They emphasized how important it is to be a strong reader in a football career that has included years of university studies. The school was also very fortunate on Monday, February 5th to have a visit from Marika from 94.3 Radio in Winnipeg. Marika is one half of the morning show, Marika and Turnbull. She brought a book she loves to read to the Grade 3-4 students and Kindergarten and donated her copy to the library - “Mr. S” by Monica Arnaldo. The kids loved it! Then on Tuesday, we had a visit in the library from Mandy Shew of the drive-home show on 103.1 Virgin Radio. Mandy entertained the Grade 1-2 students and Kindergarten with three of her favourite books and told them all about her radio job. I Love to Read Cookies, made right here at school by Mrs. Smith, were handed out to students and guests. The students from K to 6 are hosting readers throughout the month in their classrooms and in the library to help them celebrate the joy of reading! This year’s theme is Canadian Heroes. We read every day at Morris School because “there is no friend as loyal as a book!” and we Love to Read! report cards have been processed & Semester 2High School PowerSchool parent/student portal is now open and report cards are available to view on a desktop or laptop computer. Matt is an experienced songwriter, educator, and performer, and spent the day with our grade 3/4's, grade 5's and grade 9/10 General Music classes. The grade 3/4's wrote their own "raps" connected to school spirit called "Go Mavs Go!". The grade 5's began writing a song called "Can't Wait 'Til Summer" and accompanied themselves on ukulele, and the 9/10's each worked through various composition activities using chord progressions, melody, and lyrics, and began to write their own songs as well. The room was filled with creativity, passion, and excitement all day - thank you Mr. Zimmerman for coming in to work with our students! Our grade 6 band students had a special workshop day this Friday and got to work with some of our talented Senior Band/grade 8 students. Each instrument section spent a full hour working with a mentor who played their specific instrument. Lots of progress was made in their workshops and grade 6 students have even more to practice and work towards now! A huge thank you to our band mentors for sharing their passion, positivity, and musicianship through this workshop: Emilie, Whaine, Addy, Zach, Erin, Krissy, Candice, Cody, Ian and Logan. maverick athletic updateBasketball Our Varsity teams hosted their home tournament this weekend.
