mavericks attend engineering outreachThe students had a good experience at the University of Manitoba Engineering Student Outreach Day. They started the day with a presentation on the various types of Engineering and the Engineering education available at the University of Manitoba. We then toured several Engineering labs including the Electromagnetic lab, Radio waves lab, satellite and space rover lab, the drone lab, the student project lab where they saw a concrete canoe and finally the MacDon soil lab and a presentation by one of the Biosystems professors. The afternoon was spent designing a device for the Design Challenge. Our group was complimented for their interesting and innovative design. Well done, Mavericks! law students get in on the actionOn Monday, November 27th, the 40S Law students travelled to the Law Courts in Winnipeg. They were able to sit in on two trials during the morning and listen to attorneys question witnesses, hear judges interact with attorneys, and learn more about the judicial system. In the afternoon, the students were taken on a guided tour of the entire building, including seeing a Kings Bench courtroom, a room for the Appeals court, and the second-largest law library in the province! Poinsettia Fundraiser PICK-UP For all K-12 families that participated in the Poinsettia Music/Band Fundraiser, pick up is this Monday, December 4th from 3:30-5:30pm at the south bus loop/theatre doors. Sellers are responsible for picking up the orders for their customers unless you have made other arrangements. As these are very time-sensitive plants, please make sure to have your orders picked up on Monday, or contact [email protected] to make other arrangements ASAP. Senior Band TripThe grade 9-12 concert band students travelled to Brandon for two days this past week to participate in numerous workshops at the Brandon University School of Music. They got to work with many sought after professionals in the music school including Dr. Zander, director of the BU Symphonic Band, Dr. Wood, woodwind professor, Dr. Wilson, low brass professor, and more. They observed a professional Symphonic Band rehearsal, participated in a practice workshop, and took part in an interactive jazz combo session led by four phenomenal jazz musicians. The students participated in numerous engaging and inspiring music workshops over the course of two days, along with many other fun memories made at the bowling alley, swimming pool, and more. Winter Concert This Week!This Thursday, December 7th is Morris School's Winter Music Concert. The show will feature all grade 6-12 band and jazz students, along with the Morris School Concert Choir. The show starts at 7pm in the Senior Gymnasium, and all band and choir students are to be in the band room by 6:30pm in their concert uniform (all black). The students volunteered their time to play Christmas carols at the Breakfast With Santa event held here at the Morris Multiplex. The students did a great job spreading cheer. Well done, MAVS! DRIVER EDUCATION - DRIVER ZStudents who are at least 15 1/2 years old can register for Driver Z. If you are interested in taking a course in the Winter/Spring 2024 (January - June) term, you can check on December 11, 2023, to view the list of available courses. They entered the weekend ranked 8th in the province. In round robin they lost to the 4th ranked Landmark 96ers and the 2nd ranked Major Pratt Trojans before defeating the 10th ranked Boissevain Broncos and 6th ranked Elton Sabres. Their quarter-final match was against their zone rival and 3rd-ranked Rosenort Redhawks. The boys fought hard but ended up losing that match. After the tournament, Tanner Manning received the players' choice award. Congratulations on a great season boys. You represented the Mavericks well! Our 7/8 Girls have one weekend of volleyball left as they host a full-court tournament this coming Saturday. Basketball Our Varsity Girls travelled to Shevchenko this weekend to get in some early pre-season games. They started the weekend strong with a 60-44 win against the host Sabres before dropping their final two games to Ross L. Gray and Powerview. Their performance was good enough for 3rd place. Hockey The Mavs traveled to Altona last Friday where they fell in a close one 3-2 to the Aces. The boys bounced back this Friday with a victory in Morden 3-2. Morden comes to town this Wednesday to play the Mavericks (game time 7:30). The boys then travel to Portage on Thursday to play the Trojans. cultural games experienceDuring the past week, some grade 11 & 12 Phys Ed students have been engaging in Cultural Games and activities. The focus was on Arctic & Indigenous games. The students competed in the following activities, which are seen in the following pictures: leg wrestling, neck pull, knuckle hop, seated jump, stick pull, 1-footed high jump, 2-footed high jump, 4-person carry, and lacrosse. robotics club updateMrs. Edel's 3/4 class had chips and a drink delivered by a robot on Friday! Along with a slice of pizza. The Robotics Team hosted a lunchtime fundraiser in conjunction with Bigway, so thanks to all staff and students who helped out. Congratulations to Cody Dueck's robot Zeus, as he finished in first place in the Robotics Team's November tournament. Bo Moore's Banana Peel dashed into second, while Emah Phillips's Matilda was third. Natalie Wiebe's Winner Winner Chicken finished fourth, with Emily Froese's T.I.N.A. charged onto the front page. gift card fundraiserOur gift card fundraiser is underway, in support of our Grades 7-12 Athletic Department.
