A call to the community! Grade 5/6 needs help! Our Grade 5/6 classes recently experienced the first portion of the Community Leaders Program at the Tim Hortons Camp in the Whiteshell Provincial Park. During the three days, our Grade 5/6's were tasked with coming up with a project that would improve our community. The group has come back with the idea to improve the Morris School Community, specifically the playground. The improvements are meant to allow more students to be involved in low-organized, fun, & safe activities, allowing students to learn various skills like hand-eye coordination, agility, teamwork, and fair play. Here's the project... The Grade 5/6 Community Leaders program would like to construct a Gaga Ball pit as well as four square and hopscotch courts. According to Gagacenter.com, Gaga is a fast paced, high energy sport played in an octagonal pit. The more players the better! Dubbed a kinder gentler version of dodgeball, the game is played with a soft foam ball, and combines the skills of dodging, striking, running, and jumping, while trying to hit opponents with a ball below the knees. Players need to keep moving to avoid getting hit by the ball. Fun and easy, everyone gets a serious workout. Easily addictive, people can't wait to get back in the pit. The games move quickly...after a few short minutes, the action heats up with a second ball, sure to get even the best players out within minutes. Once the game ends, everyone is back in for the next round. Where can you help...? To build the eight sided Gaga ball pit, we will need some materials and some skilled labour. As you will see in the pictures below, we want to build a sturdy pit that will hold up in our weather and with the use it will receive over the school year(s). If you would like to donate your time, talents, or treasures, our Community Leaders group would greatly appreciate it. Interested parties can contact Mr. Watson directly at the school or email him at [email protected]. Our Community Leaders are looking to complete the project before they return to Camp in April. We hope to have shovels in the ground before the it freezes for the winter season. Picture Day is finally here!!A reminder of our school photos this week (Friday, October 11). Students will receive the postcard below on Monday or Tuesday of this week. We have a bit of conflict with our Grades 3-8 Divisional Cross Country meet, but we will ensure all student-athletes and their classes will have their photos taken prior to competing for our school. Once the photo day has concluded, you can view and order school photos by accessing mylifetouch.ca using your Portrait ID and Access Code which can be found on your Picture Day order form. free Parent workshop - november 5Orange Shirt Day activities wind upMavs Create Change was helping to promote Orange Shirt Day in Morris School. They prepared little orange hearts and shirts for each student in the school to convey a message to the former students of Residential Schools. They also created and put up posters around the school encouraging their fellow students to wear orange on September 30. K-6 classes commemorated Orange Shirt Day with various activities tied with their studies. Morris School hosted speaker and knowledge-keeper Mr. Lionel Mason on Friday, September 27 to read to the K-6 students and speak to the Grades 7-12 students. The topics Mr. Mason covered were Residential Schools as well as his own experiences growing up on a First Nation, and then leaving for school. The students were very interested in what he had to say and several students connected with him after his various presentations. Mr. Mason has worked in several schools around the province, including as an EA in Morris. Terry Fox Run a successIn spite of the wet conditions, Morris School's Terry Fox run was a great success. The conditions did not dampen the enthusiasm of our K-6 students, the volunteers, or the parents and community members who showed up to support the event. The Terry Fox run is an annual, non-competitive charity event held throughout our country in commemoration of Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope. The goal is also to raise fund for cancer research. We congratulate all of our students for their enthusiast support as well as our K-6 teachers for organizing the event. Special thanks to Mrs. Johnston, Mrs. Edel, and Ms. Martens for their work in putting this all together. It takes a great deal of work and we appreciate providing our students with the opportunity to learn about Terry Fox as well as encouraging them to think outside of themselves and come together to support a good cause. Maverick Girls capture tournament titleThe fourth ranked Maverick Varsity Girls' Volleyball team headed to RVS Friday morning to take on challengers from Rosenort, MCI, ECRB, Shevchenko, and RVS. Round robin play was full of challenges and plenty of learning. The Mavs finished with an 8-2 record which was good enough for 2nd place. The ladies stepped up their game for play-offs and won four straight sets to beat ECRB in the semi-finals and RVS in the championship. Along their way to victory the Mavericks also picked up 7 player of the games, awarded to Cara, Hunter, Karly, Holly E, Lexi and Payton. Comments are closed.
