Winnipeg Jets coming to town - March 5!!The True North Foundation, with help from Mr. Brad Curtis (RRVSD Superintendent), has made us an offer we couldn't refuse. Morris School and the greater community has an awesome opportunity to interact with our provinces' two professional hockey teams and the life lessons they'll bring on Tuesday, March 5! The following was released this week: WINNIPEG, Feb. 19, 2019 - The Winnipeg Jets will take over the town of Morris, Man. on Tuesday, March 5 as part of the inaugural Jets Town Takeover event. The Jets Town Takeover initiative makes Winnipeg Jets hockey and programming accessible to a community outside of the perimeter and allows the entire community to celebrate the great game of hockey together. The full day's lineup of events will engage students at Morris School through classroom and on-ice activities before the entire town celebrates social-style at a viewing party hosted by the Winnipeg Jets own home game announcer Jay Richardson. Students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 will participate in Project 11's mental wellness activities which will include yoga, interactive mindfulness exercises, speaker presentations from Craig Heisinger, Senior Vice President & Director, Hockey Operations/Assistant General Manager, and Suzi Friesen, Director of Educational Programs with the True North Youth Foundation, as well as pizza lunches put on by the Manitoba Moose Hockey Club. The Morris School Hockey Academy and Morris Mavericks High School hockey team will skate with Winnipeg Jets alumni Derek Meech and Mark Stuart in the afternoon. At 5:30 p.m. the entire town is invited to the Morris MultiPlex for a viewing party where the Winnipeg Jets vs. Tampa Bay Lightning away game will be broadcast on a big screen. The Jets will bring the home game atmosphere to the event, complete with Mick E. Moose; the voice of the Winnipeg Jets, Jay Richardson; prizing courtesy of the Jets and Moose; and Jet Dogs for purchase. Pink Shirt Day - Wednesday, February 27Please join us on Wednesday, February 27th 2019 for Red Cross Pink Day by helping to raise awareness about bullying issues. Our regular routes and trips with teams or to field trips would benefit by having you consider the following: Eastman football is calling...The Eastman Raiders Football Club contacted the school this week asking for some help to promote tackle football to those students who may be interested in becoming involved. Their flyer is below: Mavericks Athletics...Girls Basketball The Mavericks completed an exciting playoff run this week. On Tuesday the ladies defeated RVS 35-34 in dramatic fashion. The teams were tied after the first, and second quarters. RVS came out strong in the 3rd to take the lead, and we're still leading with just mere minutes left in the game. Cara (aka Captain Clutch) found another gear and converted two steals into baskets, including an 'and 1' play and sinking the foul shot for what would end up being the winning point. The Mavericks responded to their captain by picking it up on defense and preventing RVS from scoring for the remaining 45 seconds. The team advanced to the Zone IV finals against the Carman Cougars on Thursday. Unfortunately, the Cougars proved to be too strong on the day, and the Mavericks fell short, losing 36-49 despite outscoring Carman 16-11 in the fourth quarter. Big performances from Holly, who added 10 points all in the second half, and Molly who spent most the game shutting down the Cougar's leading scoring. On behalf of the coaching staff, we'd like to thank graduating players Renee and Wynn for their continued dedication to the team. Your resiliency and perseverance made you fierce opponents, but your positive attitudes and kindness made you amazing teammates. We are proud to have you represent our team, school, and community. With all but two players returning for next season, it's time to break out your sunglasses because the future looks bright for this team! More Basketball Monday: JV Boys play @ shevchenko for the Zone semi-final. Game time is 6:30 (Final will be Wednesday at Carman 6 pm) Our 7/8 teams will host JA Cuddy. The first game was a 7-3 home victory on Tuesday night. Justin Keck lead the way for the Mavericks with two goals and three assists. Ryan Coulombe made 19 saves to earn the victory. The Mustang put up a fight in their home rink (Notre Dame) the two nights later, but the Mavericks held on to a 5-3 win, winning the best of three series two games to none. Justin Keck led the way again with a hat trick and four points. Cody Clark and Maxime Collette chipped in the other two goals. Sean Penner was busy in net stopping 34 of 35 shots while earning the win in goal. The Mavericks now turn their focus to the Zone 4 championship against the GVC Zodiaks. The Zodiaks eliminated the Pembina Tigers in the other semi-final. The first Championship game will be played Tuesday, February 26 at 8 pm in Morris. The Mavericks will hit the road for Game 2 on Thursday in Winkler for a 7:30 pm game. Game 3, if necessary, will be played in Morris on Saturday, March 2 at 7:30 pm. Good luck, Mavericks! Wrestling We will only wrestle on Monday this week. No lunch or after school practices on Wednesday or Friday this week. As per last week's blog entry, our final tournament of our inaugural season, The Manitoba Amateur Wrestling Association Provincial Championships, will take place on Saturday, March 16th at West Kildonan Collegiate. We hope to see as many Maverick wrestlers competing as possible. More information to follow. Youth in Philanthropy funding availabilityThe Youth in Philanthropy is a program that involves high school students who consider worthwhile charities in their local community for grants of up to $500 to each charity. Morris and Rosenort School are proud to announce that they have joined in this amazing opportunity to help. This six-year program is initiated by The Thomas Sill Foundation and partly by the Morris Area Foundation (MAF). The local high schools and community foundation will establish a Youth Advisory Committee who will make decisions and consider applications. The Thomas Sill Foundation will make $3,500 available to the Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) for a period of 3 years with the expectation that the MAF will continue to fund the program for another 3 years. Students will have the opportunity to make decisions, and will learn knowledge and skills as active and informed philanthropists. This will help to bring about positive and lasting change in our communities. Applications for grants will be easily accessible online and at Morris School for pickup, or you can contact Morris School and we will find a way for you to get an application. After the deadline, the group will meet three or four times to consider what charities we will award the grant money to. If we decide to award your charity, we will contact you with information. Please be patient as these decisions aren’t made overnight! We will host a ceremony at our school where the charities we have decided to give grants will receive them. We thank everyone for your interest and charity work in our community! 8/1/2022 03:00:29 am
