Bus Drivers needed - urgentIf you are able and interested, please consider helping our community by serving as a Spare Bus Driver. Our regular routes and trips with teams or to field trips would benefit by having you consider the following: Youth in Philanthropy - funding opportunityThe Youth in Philanthropy is a program that involves high school students who consider worthwhile charities in their local community for grants of up to $500 to each charity. Morris and Rosenort School are proud to announce that they have joined in this amazing opportunity to help. This six-year program is initiated by The Thomas Sill Foundation and partly by the Morris Area Foundation (MAF). The local high schools and community foundation will establish a Youth Advisory Committee who will make decisions and consider applications. The Thomas Sill Foundation will make $3,500 available to the Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) for a period of 3 years with the expectation that the MAF will continue to fund the program for another 3 years. Students will have the opportunity to make decisions, and will learn knowledge and skills as active and informed philanthropists. This will help to bring about positive and lasting change in our communities. Applications for grants will be easily accessible online and at Morris School for pickup, or you can contact Morris School and we will find a way for you to get an application. After the deadline, the group will meet three or four times to consider what charities we will award the grant money to. If we decide to award your charity, we will contact you with information. Please be patient as these decisions aren’t made overnight! We will host a ceremony at our school where the charities we have decided to give grants will receive them. We thank everyone for your interest and charity work in our community! Maverick AthleticsGirls Basketball The Mavericks battled through some tough competition on the weekend, finishing their tournament with a 40-29 win over RVS. Cara (left) led all scorers on the weekend with a total of 28 points. Congratulations to Cara, Sjusen, and Wynn for earning Player of the Game honours. Come cheer on the team as they take on RVS in the Zone IV semi-finals at 6pm Tuesday in Morris. Winners will advance to the Zone Finals in Carman on Thursday. The Varsity Girls would like to thank all of our parents, students, and staff who helped to volunteer at our home tournament this past weekend. Without your support, it would be extremely difficult to host a tournament. Boys Basketball The boys played Carman this week and really gave them a game! At the halfway point our boys were up by 2 points - led by Zach Norris who made eight 3-pointers in the first half! The team played hard and stuck together, but weren't able to get the win. Nonetheless, a valiant effort from our Mavericks as their improved play really gave Carman something to think about. Next week the boys practice Tuesday and Thursday, with a playoff game the following Monday. Hockey The #1 ranked Maverick hockey team took their first step to a Zone IV championship this past week by eliminating the Carman Cougars from contention. The first game was a dominating 8-0 home victory on Tuesday night. Maxime Collette was the leading "point getter" for the Mavericks with one goal and three assists. Ryan Coulombe earned the win between the pipes. The Cougars came to play in their home rink the next night, but the Mavericks held on to a 4-1 win, winning the best of three series two games to none. Justin Keck led the way with two goals. Sean Penner earned the win in goal. The Mavericks now turn their focus to the Zone 4 semi-finals against the Mountain Mustangs. The Mustangs finished the regular season on a good note, winning eight of their final ten games before disposing the Miller Aces in two straight games. The first semi-final game will be played tomorrow (Tuesday, February 19) at 8 pm in Morris. The Mavericks will hit the road for Game 2 on Thursday in Notre Dame for a 7:30 pm game. Game 3, if necessary, will be played in Morris on Saturday, February 23 at 7:30 pm. Good luck, Mavericks!
