They had to select an ecosystem and research organisms that live within it. They had to build the ecosystem AND classify the organisms. Things got messy with paint, hot glue, and plasticine, but it was worth it because all of the cans turned out great! Well done Grade 5/6's! welcome Playground Communication BoardThe new weather-proof communication board, installed by the fence in the grassy area just outside the early years' doors, was created with the goal of fostering a more inclusive environment, encouraging positive social interactions, and promoting functional language development for all students, families, and community members who use our playground and field. This communication board serves as a tool to facilitate communication for students who are non-verbal, have limited vocabulary/communication skills, or are learning English. It enables them to communicate effectively with their peers, teachers, and staff in an unstructured environment. On this board, you'll find words and pictures that assist children in expressing themselves while they play. The board includes numerous important words we refer to as “core” words. These core words allow children to convey various ideas, such as pronouns, action words, questions, feelings, and locations. These words can be used individually to communicate or combined to form sentences. They can also be helpful in planning activities. Simply point to a word as you say it, and your child can learn how to use these words to talk and play. It's an excellent way to support children, enabling them to express themselves and enjoy playtime! Everyone is encouraged to use the board, touch the icons, and explore this alternative means of communication. spirit week a hit!!Our student leadership group wanted to pass along the following message... If you do not want your student participating in the screening, please complete the Opt-Out form and return it to your student's homeroom teacher. Present research confirms the importance of vision and eye health on students’ learning. According to statistics provided by the Canadian Association of Optometrists, four out of every ten school-aged children have a vision problem that may negatively affect learning. Children who cannot see the board clearly, focus on a picture, or follow words in a book may not be able to reach their full potential. Manitoba Health covers the cost of children’s comprehensive eye examinations, therefore all families can access this free service. If you don’t currently have a family optometrist, you can find one by going to the MAO website at http://optometrists.mb.ca/find-an-optometrist.cfm and selecting Find an Optometrist, or call the Manitoba Association of Optometrists @ 204-943-9811. maverick athletic updateVolleyball Our Junior Varsity Boys went undefeated in a busy week of league play as they defeated DCS and Carman in straight sets and spotted St. Paul's one set before storming back and taking 3 straight. Happy Thanksgiving! lots to be grateful for!As the temperatures dip and the leaves start to turn & fall, we have many things to be grateful for at Morris School. Our students, their families and our staff make a community that accomplishes many things every day, giving us a sense that Morris School is bigger than ourselves. The friends and classmates our students have accumulated throughout the years bring colour and fun to their days. Our many sports and clubs give our students a chance to intersect between passions and academia as well as learn how to be a team player. Our teachers and staff inspire students and improve the quality of their lives. Morris School provides a quality education that many in the world would be lining up to receive. Research shows that training our brains to be grateful on a daily basis allows us to lead a happier and healthier life. The benefits include all the items listed below as well as reducing anxiety and other negative emotions. The benefits of gratitude are numerous and well-studied. The 'staff' at the Morris School blog encourages all of our readers to spend a moment every day practicing gratitude. Our world is a better place; our school is a better school if the people inside of it practice gratitude. We have a lot to be grateful for, so spend a few minutes today thinking of just three of those things. You may also want to express your gratitude if it is a person or people you have in your life that makes your life better. Thank you, Mavericks! Happy Thanksgiving! one example of gratitude...Mrs. Jashyn sent the 'blog' an example of the gratitude she has for Mr. Dyck.
