They hosted over 100 students from 6 different classes and spent the day learning all about jerky. Throughout the day they were able to process over 30 lbs of venison, as well as walleye, salmon and rainbow trout. Dried meat was a staple in the diet of Indigenous peoples in Manitoba, and it holds profound cultural and practical significance. Historically, it served as a vital means of preservation, allowing communities to store excess meat for leaner times or extended journeys. Indigenous peoples, such as the Cree, Ojibwe, and Métis, mastered the art of drying meat through techniques passed down through generations, using sunlight, air, and smoke to remove moisture while retaining flavour and nutrients. This method not only ensured food security but also facilitated mobility during seasonal migrations and hunting expeditions. Beyond its utilitarian value, dried meat remains a cherished culinary tradition, offering a rich source of protein and sustenance. The ACCESS class would like to say a special thank you to everyone who came and supported them throughout the day. Mrs. Clayton, Mr. Lehman, Mrs. Leflar, Mr. Petty, Mr. Moore and Ms. Kulbaba … we loved having you join us! Your students were respectful, helpful and open to new tastes and experiences. Erin Hamblin lost her quarter-final match to the eventual silver medalist in girls' singles. The mixed team of Brooklyn Williamson/Garland Labauza as well as the girls' doubles team of Ally Sawatsky/Sam Storck both lost in the quarter-finals. The group is progressing well as they become more comfortable with our community. Somewhere between 3 and 14 people attend. During the past few weeks, it has been Ramadan which means many clients are not able to attend and they've had smaller groups. The people have appreciated having a space to practice English skills and connect each week. We are happy to contribute as a school by providing the space for these types of activities to occur. kitchen project fundraiser - get your tickets! The school's Kitchen Renovation Project is working in conjunction with the upcoming Morris & Area Recreation's Spring Fling Vendor & Craft Market (April 27 - Morris Multiplex) to run a Wine Raffle and 50/50 Draw. First up was the Miles Mac Buckeyes. A back-and-forth affair was capped off by a clutch touchdown and 1-point conversion to elevate the Mavericks to victory 19-12. The next game against the Murdoch Mackay Clansmen was a tight defensive battle. Our Mavericks' first offensive series resulted in a touchdown and that was enough for our defence. Mavericks 7; Clansmen 0. The two wins put the Mavericks in a tie for first place in the Zach Collaros division of the Blue Bombers High School Girls Flag Football League. new date set for parent council info meetingWe had originally planned to host a member of the Manitoba Association of Parent Councils in November. They were unable to attend due to personal reasons. We are happy to announce that we have rescheduled this information meeting for the evening of Tuesday, April 30 at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the music/band room. As you may or may not be aware, Morris School does not have a school-based parent group (parent council). We're hoping the meeting on the 30th of April will be the first step in changing this. (a) According to the Resource Guide for Manitoba’s Parent Advisory Councils, PACs are created for a reason, and it is important to discuss and decide together what that purpose will be within a school community. The Parent Advisory Council within a school has many functions and roles. Examining this purpose may lead to the development of your PAC mission statement. Some of the areas a PAC might work in include:
(c) Membership in the Morris School PAC includes adults interested in the objectives of the PAC who are parents/guardians of children enrolled in the School. These individuals are entitled to and may become members of the Parent Council upon being elected. Please contact Mr. Watson directly if you have an interest or questions. solar eclipse - monday, April 8thAn email was sent home on Friday, April 5th with a letter detailing Morris School's plan to manage the risk that the solar eclipse could bring to our school community. The letter reads as follows... Dear Parents/Guardians, I am writing to inform you about an upcoming celestial event that is both exciting and potentially hazardous if not approached with caution. On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse is set to occur, with Manitoba experiencing an approximate 50 percent occlusion eclipse. A solar eclipse is undoubtedly a fascinating phenomenon that can captivate people of all ages. However, it's crucial to emphasize the importance of safety, particularly when it comes to observing the eclipse directly. Even a glance at the partially eclipsed sun can result in permanent vision damage. As educators and caregivers, it's our responsibility to ensure the well-being of our students during this event. Therefore, to ensure their safety, Morris School will be implementing additional measures. We will be keeping students indoors from noon until we dismiss everyone at 3:20 p.m. This timeframe encompasses the duration of the eclipse and minimizes the risk of students viewing it without appropriate eye protection. In light of this, we recommend that town students bring their lunches on this day to ensure they can stay indoors during the eclipse period. Additionally, if any students feel they cannot stay inside for the duration mentioned above, we ask that parents consider excusing them for the afternoon. This decision is made in the interest of the safety of our entire school community. To commemorate this event, Ms. Kulbaba's class will be hosting a Solar Eclipse Watch Party in Room 14 from 1 to 2 p.m. Invitations will be sent out to homerooms for Grades K-6 students. Other staff in other grades may also be organizing indoor watch activities for students as well. In collaboration with Manitoba Education and Early Childhood Learning, we have access to resources and guidance on solar eclipses, including information on how to view them safely. I encourage you to review these materials and discuss them with your child to reinforce the importance of safety during the eclipse. If you have any questions or concerns regarding our plans for the solar eclipse, please don't hesitate to reach out to me. Sincerely, Mike Watson picking up and dropping off - please help us!!Several cars travel down Toronto Avenue every morning and every day after school to drop off and pick up their students. The ONLY way this can seamlessly work is if people DO NOT park in the turnaround circle at the far east end of our school. Parking in the circle causes multiple issues. If you are waiting for your student, you can park along Toronto Avenue up to the far east end of the school building; not beyond it. You can now also park in the lot beside our new outdoor courts facility. Please remind your student to not use the street or the turnaround circle to access your vehicle in the parking lot for safety reasons. They should walk around the circle to get to your car. We thank those who work hard at being patient, parking in the right locations and watching out for our students. You are appreciated and we are grateful for you. does your child have a loaner laptop @ home?Attention Parents and Students: If you have borrowed a loaner laptop and/or charger from the office, you must return it promptly. We are currently missing several items, and their timely return is crucial. Additionally, please ensure to monitor your student email accounts closely, as the office will be reaching out to students with outstanding loaner laptops next week. Your immediate cooperation in this matter is expected and appreciated. maverick girls make historyA group of 17 young people from Morris School are making history. For the first time in school history, a girls' flag football team is playing in a league with 18 other teams with the goals of competing well, having fun, and learning a game that is just waiting for them to take advantage of. The girls have been practicing for a few short weeks, learning the game and working on their skills. Their first game was this past Wednesday. After spending an hour participating in a skills camp hosted by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the girls took on the Royals from Windsor Park Collegiate. After a slow start, the girls rebounded with Bethany Wiebe throwing a touchdown pass to Jenna Sabourin. Two other touchdowns were scored by Molly Sanders, including two, one-point convert attempts; Wiebe was the quarterback for each of the three touchdowns. Darci Epp intercepted the Royals signal caller, and Faith Rempel was credited with a sack, multiple quarterback hurries, and one safety when she flagged the ball carrier in the end zone. The girls continue to prepare for their next opponents this upcoming Wednesday. The schedule can be found below. badminton news! The Mavericks varsity badminton team travelled to Carman this week to participate in their first tournament of the year.
