Congratulations to the 'I Love To Read' calendar winners for weeks 1 and 2! guest readers galore!Focusing on “I Love to Read” Morris School has had another busy week with guests from our community visiting classrooms and the library. The Kindergarten classes had a library visit with Pat Schmitke of Bigway Foods. Each student received a Bigway coupon of $5 to spend in the store on anything they wish. One of the students declared that he would be buying a “jug of milk”. Hopefully, everyone makes such a wise choice! Thank you Pat for your generosity! Jack Wiebe from YFC Morris entertained the Grade 3-4 classes, followed by the 5-6 classes with a classic Robert Munsch story. Naturally, he added his own embellishments complete with a blender and wig. Thank you Jack for keeping us laughing while we read! Glenda Funk visited two special classes - 5-6 Kulbaba and 1-2 Blanchette on Thursday. Her grandson, Jayden, was excited to have Mrs. Funk read two of their favourite books - “The Bad Seed” and “The Cool Bean”. The 1-2 class also enjoyed their books from one of their favourite EAs. Thank you, Glenda! Lauren Wiebe, a graduate alumni of Morris School, read to Mr. Petty’s 5-6 class. Lauren is the daughter of recently retired Morris School teacher, Robin Wiebe, and is a Winnipeg Police Officer. She is an excellent role model and as well as sharing books, she answered questions for the students on her career and challenges of being a police officer. Thank you Constable Wiebe for taking the time to be here on Friday. k's also hosted a guest reader in their classThis week the Kindergarten class had the privilege of learning from Mr. Steveson. A well-prepared, well-rested student will do as well as they are supposed to do if they have done this. exam study tipsThe following excerpt from Kidshelphone.ca summarizes some very good tips for students preparing for exams... It’s common to feel stressed before taking a test, especially if you don’t feel prepared. Keeping up good study habits will help you remember things at test time so you can earn better grades. Here are some study tips to help you prepare for a test: 1. Start early: start studying several days before the test/exam. You’ll have more time to learn and remember what you need to know and the information will stay in your long-term memory for final exams. Cramming the night before will increase your stress and only puts the information in your short-term memory, so you’ll likely forget and have to relearn it at the end of the term. 2. Stay positive: remember that it’s within your ability to do well on the test/exam. Try not to put too much pressure on yourself. 3. Set priorities: spend most of your study time on what’s most important for the test/exam. If you’re not sure what that is, ask your teacher. If your teacher has spent a lot of time on something in class, it’s probably important to know. 4. Make study sheets: try to summarize the main ideas in a few points. Make a single page of notes and review it several times. 5. Get help: ask your teacher to explain any material that you don’t understand. You can also ask a friend or classmate for help. 6. Go to the review class: many teachers review the important material during the class before a test or exam. It’s a good idea to attend and take as many notes as you can. This is also your chance to ask questions. Remember: study as best as you can and get a good night’s sleep before the exam! We wish all of our students well as they prepare. Way to Go, MAVs! january exams updateOur Grade 12 students kicked off our January 2024 First Semester exam process with their Provincial English exams. The four-day (well...three days due to a snow day) finished up on Friday, January 12. The remaining exam schedule is below. We encourage all of our students who have exams to prepare well in advance, reach out to their teachers when they have questions, get some good sleep and eat well over the next few weeks. Remember: study as best as you can and get a good night’s sleep before the test! We wish all of our students well as they prepare. THE cookbook fundraiser is going strong! We still have some 'Mavy's Favourites' cookbooks for sale in the office for $20. All proceeds will go towards our senior year's canteen renovation project. We can accept cash, cheque, debit, and credit cards. Our school community contributed their favourite recipes to this project. Enjoy a good meal and support our fundraising endeavour. Thank you! A 'new year' in kindergartenThis week in Kindergarten they learned about what a 'new year' means. They talked about how it always happens in January and figured out what year they will be graduating high school (2036). After the lesson, the students made crowns to celebrate the new year! They also read the book The Magical Yet, a story about how sometimes we feel frustrated by what we can't do...YET! The book taught them that whether you are a child or an adult, there are things that we haven't learned...YET, but can learn! After they read the story, they talked about things that they CAN DO and things that they can't do YET! Students chose one thing to write down that they would like to learn in 2024 and drew a picture to go with it! Happy New Year! mavericks athletic updateBasketball The crazy weather this week led to the cancellation of games on Wednesday and Thursday nights for all of our teams. This weekend our Junior Varsity boys host their home tournament. The Boys play at 3:30 on Friday and then 10:00 and 3:30 on Saturday. Students learned how to prepare their play area, set safety boundaries, and then got to experience a wild roller coaster ride right in the classroom! Since the older students can't see what the younger students can see in the headset, it's a great communication challenge. Thanks to the grade 7-8 "teachers" who did a great job, and the students who participated! The VR headsets are scheduled to return, so more students should get a chance soon. robotics club updateThe Morris Robotics Team's visit from the Morris & District Chamber of Commerce was covered in the Southeast Journal. Thank you to Cindy and Gem for these valuable lessons. grade 11 biology attend biolab experienceThis past week the Grade 11 Biology class took a field trip to the Youth BioLab at St. Boniface Hospital. We were able to work with fibroblast cells and discussed the ways we could slow them down in the morning session. Fibroblast cells are cells that create scar tissue in the heart after a heart attack, and if we can slow them down, maybe we can prevent some of the damage that a heart attack causes. In the afternoon we dissected pig hearts and traced the flow of blood through the heart, to the lungs and then eventually to the rest of the body. Here are some pictures of our day! our visual arts talent is on displaychristmas around the worldThe K-2 classes travelled around the world this week to explore how Christmas is celebrated in different countries. On Tuesday evening, representatives from our school received two separate grants. The first was directed towards our Music and Band program. The Morris Area Foundation for granting the Morris Band Program $700 through the Mike Hesford Music Grant. These funds will go towards the purchase of an upright bass pickup and other instrument purchases. This grant is in memory of Michael Hesford, a local musician who truly embraced the community of Morris through his volunteer work, his mentorship of young people, and his commentary work as the announcer for the Pembina Valley Twisters and The Morris Mavericks High School hockey teams. Mike was well known for the bands he played in Highway 59, Lost Highway, and Tequila South. On behalf of Morris School and the Music Program, thank you to the Morris Area Foundation for your generous support of our students and the music program here at Morris School. The second was a tremendous kick-start to our next major fundraising project. Our kitchen connected to the MPR needs a major renovation and upgrade. We plan to upgrade the kitchen, which seems original to the school, to a commercial standard that will allow us to serve our growing student population more effectively. The cost of the upgrade will run between $42,000 and $55,000. Our grant application to the Morris Area Foundation was accepted and they have pledged to donate $10,000 to the project. This is an excellent push in the right direction. We are grateful to the members of the MAF committee for this award. We will now work on fundraising the remaining monies and applying for other grants we qualify for. A great way for our students to provide some service to the community to those in need. Way to Go, MAVs! our school welcomes back Cookem Daisey!Recently our Grade 11 History and ACCESS classes had the distinct pleasure of hosting Cookem Daisey, the divisional Knowledge Keeper, who enlightened us about traditional foods and the fascinating story of the Three Sisters. Transitioning between culinary wisdom and storytelling, Cookem Daisey shared insights into traditional foods that have sustained Indigenous communities for generations. She showcased the versatility of corn, beans, and squash and explained a variety of dishes, from hearty soups to nutritious bread. We were even able to utilize some of the pumpkins we planted with her in the spring! Cookem Daisey told us the tale of the Three Sisters, a sacred trio of crops - corn, beans, and squash - deeply rooted in Indigenous cultures. These three crops are inseparable sisters who thrive when planted together. Corn provides a sturdy stalk for the beans to climb, while beans enrich the soil with nitrogen, benefiting the corn. The broad leaves of the squash create a natural mulch, preventing weeds and preserving moisture. The three plants work together to provide the perfect growing conditions for one another. We appreciated listening to Cookem Daisey’s stories and learning from her wisdom. The students and staff also enjoyed the delicious soup and corn tortillas! mavy's cookbook on sale - just in time for xmasAs a part of the plan to upgrade the kitchen attached to our MPR, we need to keep raising funds.
