undergrad awards make their returnAfter a few years away, our Undergrad Awards Ceremony returned at Morris School. Seeing as it was our first since the pandemic, we limited the event to students and staff to ensure we remembered how these events went. Thanks to the staff, led by Mrs. Laurie Edel for calling for the return of the event. We also appreciate all the work our front office staff did during a busy time of the year to make this event work. A number of current Grades 10-12 (last year's Grades 9-11) students were recognized for having overall averages of 80% or higher, for being involved in our athletics and/or clubs, and for a combination of those two things. Congratulations to the following students: some ice cream on a rainy dayWe had some rain on Friday, but that didn't damper our students and staff's appetite for some ice cream! As per our last blog post, we had a generous of the Kosawa family, that allowed our school to host a K-6 ice cream fundraiser. In the end, we couldn't leave the Grades 7-12 students out of the fun, so they were invited to participate as well. The Kosawa family operates the Barefoot Cafe (@the_barefoot_cafe_) in St. Malo when the weather is conducive to ice cream and other summer treats. We appreciate the Kosawa family for providing our school with such a unique opportunity. We also appreciate the staff and students from the Alternative Classroom assisting us to ensure all of our "customers" were served quickly and with a smile! The generosity continuesThe blog staff received an email from Mr. David and Mrs. Lorraine Hamblin prior to the release of this week's post. A portion of the email included the following, "We had a big pumpkin patch and the girls (Erin, Addison, Claire, & Paige) are selling the pumpkins as a fundraiser for the school band programs. They have carving, pie, and all sorts of decorative pumpkins. We are located east of Morris on Hwy 23 and then 0.9 km north on PR246. Payment can be made by cash or e-transfer to Lorraine Hamblin at 204-712-6170." This is yet another example of the generosity our school community shows as people continue to step up to give of their talents, treasures, and/or time. We appreciate everyone who finds a way to make our school a better place. Thank you, Hamblins! Way to Go, Mavericks! let's be safe when using crosswalksOur school is close to two busy highways. Highway 23 is right behind our school and Highway 75 is the main street in our town. Understanding that, we are reminding all of our students who walk to and from school to use the crosswalks and use them safely. Here are a few reminders:
Grade 7/8s MEET with Mr. Lionel MasonOn Thursday morning Mrs. Lucier’s Grade 7/8 class walked to the public library in Morris to meet with a very important person. As part of the celebration of Truth and Reconciliation Day, we participated in a storytelling session with an indigenous elder. Mr. Lionel Mason took an hour out of his day to educate and share his story with the class about his time in Residential Schools, his family, his coping strategies and his life story. He also had time to take questions at the end of the session the students were more than eager to ask questions about what they learned. At the end of the session, Mr. Mason and his wife gave away an Orange shirt which went to Tyson Funk, the lucky winner! It was a great morning and we are so thankful to the Morris Public Library, Mrs. Dekezel and Mr. Mason for granting us this wonderful opportunity to learn! scholastic book fair a hit!Thank you to the students, parents and staff who supported our Scholastic Book Fair.
