We are happy to find a place online where we can inform, notify, and celebrate our Morris School community. The goal of this space is to provide weekly updates to our students and parents. Picking up and Dropping Off Morris StudentsIn order to establish a consistent process for student pick ups and drop offs, we would ask parents and guardians to use the school office, just to the right of the main entrance of the school to pick up or drop off your child(ren) any time during the school day. We would also encourage your child to enter the appropriate school entrance on their own. We will ensure their safe arrival to their classroom. Need to Pay a Fee? Mav's Create ChangeMavs Create Change will be raising awareness of the plight of children who attended residential schools in preparation for Orange Shirt Day on Sept. 30. This year Orange Shirt Day falls on a Sunday, but Mavs Create Change is asking students and staff to wear orange on Monday to honour those children and to show that "Every Child Matters." Orange Shirt Day - Monday, October 1Morris School is proud to celebrate Orange Shirt Day on Monday, October 1st. We encourage all of our students and staff to participate as a community to show our support. The following excerpt from orangeshirtday.org explains the background of the event.... Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in the spring of 2013. It grew out of Phyllis' story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually. The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. It also gives teachers time to plan events that will include children, as we want to ensure that we are passing the story and learning on to the next generations. Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come. Varsity Girls SoccerCongratulations to the Varsity Girls' Soccer team for their contribution to the school this season. The girl's played their best game of the season this week against Morden. The result wasn't what they wanted, but to playing their best in the last game of the year must be satisfying. Thank you to all of our Maverick student-athletes as well as coaches Mrs. Edel and Mrs. Skoglund for their work with the team. Your contributions do not go unnoticed! Mavericks host JV Volleyball TournamentThe Junior Varsity Volleyball teams hosted a great tournament last weekend. Not only was the tournament well run (thanks to Mrs. Kurlyko, Mr. Scott Stevenson, our varsity girls volleyball team, parent and community volunteers), but our Maverick teams performed exceedingly well. Congratulations to our boys for finishing in second place and our girls for their championship performance. Thank you for hosting a great event and representing our school well, both on and off the court! Go Mavs! Grade 7 & 8 SoccerThe 7/8 boys had a great day of soccer on Tuesday in Rosenort going undefeated in pool play. They had a hard-fought semi-final game against Starbuck but ultimately lost in a shoot out. Not giving up, the Mavericks went on to win the Consolation final versus J A Cuddy. Way to go Mavs! Scholastic Book Fair Thanks for making our Scholastic Book Fair a Success! A huge thank you to all the parents, students and teachers who supported our Scholastic Book Fair in September. We have been able to add $800 of new books to the School Library for all of our students to enjoy! Congratulations to Raymond Alexander in Mr. Petty’s 5/6 classroom on being the lucky winner of the Prize Draw. Raymond was able to choose $25 of free books for himself and $25 for his classroom. Our next book fair will be held in April 2019. From Mrs. Fisher, K-6 GuidanceIn K-6 Guidance we have been working on “Self Awareness”, becoming more aware of our thoughts, feelings, actions and learning more about the significance of self confidence, mutual respect, and independence. In grade K-2 students have focused on activities of getting along with others, listening to the teacher, and healthy choices. In grades 3-6 students have been focusing on activities in which they can have pride in oneself in the form of dignity, value, and self respect.Giving positive feedback to others and receiving the same in return which helps develop a stronger self image. Below are some of the responses from grade 3-6 students from various classes on “How can you contribute to your classroom?” Mavericks Host JV Volleyball Tournament Comments are closed.
