We'll do our best to make this edition twice as good as a regular one. 2022-23 homeroom assignments (last call) *****LAST CALL***** Deadline Tuesday, May 24th (2 pm) As per the article in our last blog post, It will soon be time for our teachers and student services staff to meet to discuss the students who will make up the Grades 1-8 homerooms for the next school year. Students in K, Grades 2, 4, 6 will be moving to new homerooms next year. IF you have some feedback regarding your student's preference to be with another student (singular), please forward those requests on to Mr. Watson via email. We will not entertain teacher requests as a variety of factors go into deciding what homeroom a student will be placed so we can achieve as much balance and harmony to all of our homeroom classes as possible. mav's attend gathering of friendsLast week our Grades 7-9 students accepted an invitation by Ginew School and Roseau River Anishinaabe First Nation to their "Gathering of Friends." This fabulous event allowed our students to learn from multiple presentations and stories from knowledge keepers. Topics ranged from Anishinaabe traditions during significant events in a person's life to Impact of Residential Schools to drum making to sweat lodges. The students were treated to a lunch and witnessed a celebratory Pow Wow, where each dance and part of the Pow Wow was explained to the group. One of the highlights of the Pow Wow was seeing one of our own Mavericks (Gracie P from Grade 1/2 Roberge) perform. Morris School is grateful for the invitation and the opportunity to learn. Miigwech grade 5/6's experience camp adventuresTim Hortons graciously invited the Grade 5/6 crew to camp in the Whiteshell! Students participated in archery, a ropes course, painting craft, a nature appreciation walk and a talent show. We worked on team building, self reflections and what we appreciated about others. Everyone had a great time. Thank you Tim Hortons! students learn about war in ukraineOn Thursday, the Grades 7-12s were very fortunate to be joined by members of the Ukrainian Educational and Cultural Centre (Oseredok). Nick Krawetz and Yuliia Ivaniuk joined our school via Google Meet to answer questions, discuss a wide variety of topics, and present on the war in Ukraine. Morris School would like to extend their most profound thanks for taking the time to be with us. Nick and Yuliia are both active members of many Ukrainian-Canadian councils and educational programs across Manitoba. They are also heavily involved in the current resettlement of Ukrainian refugees in the province. We commend their continuous efforts and, once again, thank them for taking time out of their busy schedules to present to us. We would also like to extend special thanks to Ralph Groening, the Reeve for the RM of Morris, who joined the presentation and offered support on behalf of the RM. He thanked Nick and Yuliia for their efforts and applauded Morris School for the funds they have raised. Ralph himself is active in support of Ukraine and his presence was greatly appreciated. morris school hosts the class of 2035This past Tuesday, Morris School had a "Welcome to Kindergarten" event for those students entering Kindergarten in the fall. Prospective students and their families toured a number of locations within the school where they will spend a good amount of time and participated in activities that gave them a closer look at what they will be doing when they arrive in September. Students and their families also left with a bag full of resources and activities they can do to prepare for their first day of Kindergarten as a Morris Maverick. We hope our students enjoyed themselves? We sure did! maverick earns a sport on team manitobaCongratulations Katie McLachlan on being selected to represent Team Manitoba at the 2022 Canada Summer games! “The Manitoba Amateur Wrestling Association is busy training for the 2022 summer games in St. Catherines, Ontario. Katie McLachlan is one of the athletes attending the summer games. She’s been wrestling for six years and very excited to be participating.” Middle years' badminton wraps upOn Wednesday May 11, the Morris Mavericks hosted Rosenort and Lowe Farm for middle years badminton regional championships. Everyone had a great time and there was some really strong competition. Our grade 3/4's make it worth the trip!This past Thursday our Grade 3/4 classes made their way to the Mennonite Heritage Village Museum in Steinbach. The students "traveled through time" during their visit as they toured and experienced activities and presentations that highlighted how a well known group of Manitoba settlers arrived and made a life for themselves in Southern Manitoba. Look below 👇concert band students learn from a master!This past Monday, all 4 ensembles in the Morris 6-12 Band Program had the pleasure of learning from master music educator, Mr. Bill Kristjanson. Each band worked on a variety of musical concepts with Mr. K, from basic fundamentals to advanced listening skills. It was a fun, inspiring, and educational day of band workshops here in the music room! mavericks track & Field travel to SelkirkThe MAVS Track and Field athletes travelled to Selkirk on Tuesday May 17th and competed against 850 other student-athletes from 30 different schools! The Mavs performed well for their first track & field meet in over two years! Notable finishes: Amy Neustater- 5th place in SR Girls Javelin throw, and Rocky Musa- 4th place in SR Mens pentathlon event. Next track meet is May 26th in Stonewall. Run Club takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 3:20pm. We will meet in the small gymnasium to do a quick dynamic warm up and will leave from the front of the school from there! Students can join Run Club at any time and participate in some or all training days as they wish. Please see Mrs. Zimmerman or Mr. Ricard if you have any questions. welding shop giving back to the communityThe Morris School Welding program used their time and talents to create some donations to the Morris Valley Society that will help raise money for upgrades to stands for the stampede grounds. We also made some bike racks for the Morris Early Learning Centre. Grade 5/6 coding club making progressThe Grade 5/6 Coding Club has been a fun learning journey since the start of February. Students worked through Code.org lessons, then graduated to Scratch, where they have been designing and programming their own games and other projects. Time is well spent with helping each other and using creative problem-solving skills. Thanks to Mr. Moore and his volunteers for making this club a reality. Way to Go, MAV's! access raises funds for ukrainian childrenThe plant sale fundraiser is complete! The ACCESS class raised $320 for the Voices of Children Foundation. This foundation provides psychosocial and psychological support to children affected by the war in Ukraine. It helps them overcome the consequences of armed conflict and provide non-stop assistance to affected children and families from all over the country, providing emergency psychological assistance and assisting in the evacuation process. Thank you to everyone that bought plants and made donations. Great job, Mavs! access class celebrate jewish cultureAfter reading "Number the Stars" by Lois Lowry and learning about the Holocaust, the ACCESS class wanted to do something to celebrate Jewish culture and tradition. Special thanks to Angela Bahnman for teaching us how to make latkes! All of our students enjoyed the delicious fried potato patties. We also learned about Hanukkah, the dreidel game, gelt and the Menorah. We appreciate Mrs. Bahnman coming in and sharing her time and expertise with us. intramural updateLike Frisbee? Trash reared its ugly head as the snow melted and most of the water from the playground disappeared. The students enthusiastically engaged in this service oriented task. Thanks you, students!
