grade 7/8 Food driveThe Grades 7/8 classrooms had a visit from Rosalie Fulford this week. We invited her to come speak to us about the history of the Red River Valley Food Bank, as well as the current issues that this important institution is facing. During the lockdowns they were not able to hold their regular town-wide food drives. Increasing food prices have meant that more people need to use the food bank. It also means the costs for the food bank to provide food for its clients have gone way up. Combined with the reduction in food donations, this amounts to a "perfect storm" for our food bank. After reading an article in the Southeast Journal by Sean Conway, our 7/8s decided to do something to help the food bank! The 7/8s will be collecting food items and toiletries in their classrooms for the month of March. We will be delivering our donations at the end of the month. Find a 7/8 student and give them a food donation! Important items: pasta, pasta sauce, cereal, canned vegetables and fruits, canned meat, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, preserves, and toiletry items. friendly reminderWe would like to remind parents, guardians, or whomever is dropping students off at school to avoid entering the bus loop before 9:00 am and after 2:30 pm. This is a safety concern and the bus drivers have brought this to our attention. They can drop off their students in the front of the school or alongside the fence area. Thank you for your cooperation. There was also a very heart warming article in Steinbachonline.com about Charlie Berg's and an anonymous donor's support of Maddox. For those who didn't read the article, it can be found [HERE]! Way to Go, MAV's! getting to know morrisThe Grade 1/2 classes have spent the past month collaborating to create a model of Morris. They were presented with a problem of a snowman who was new to Morris for the winter needing to learn about the town. The students created models of our town’s businesses while researching the community helpers who work there and how they support the community. They also learned about maps and mapping skills, our province and country, and used plasticine in art to create snowmen versions of the community helpers. Grade 5/6 students hit the ice!Students from the 5/6 classes were at the Morris Curling Club this week to learn curling. Students were taught various techniques with delivery, sweeping and game-calling. They played mini-games and for many, this was a brand-new experience. Thank-you to the volunteers, especially Lorne and Chris Hamblin! mavericks athletics updateBasketball Our Junior Varsity Boys competed in the Zone Final in Rosenort on Tuesday night. Despite a great effort and never quit attitude, they fell just short to the Redhawks 68-65. Our Grades 7/8 teams also competed in the first round of playoffs, with the boys falling to St. Malo and the girls falling to Oak Bluff. Congratulations to all Maverick Basketball Players on your effort and improvement this season. Please remember to hand in your jerseys to your coach or Mrs. Kurylko.
