Sad news at morris schoolWe received some sad news on Wednesday evening. One of our own Mavericks, Grade 12 student Jaydon Gibbs passed away suddenly from complications he's experienced with his heart since birth. For those who knew Jaydon, they reflected on a quiet, respectful, pleasant, & kind young man of character. He will be missed a great deal by his family, friends, and the Morris School Community. We appreciated the support of our divisional crisis response team as well as our in house faculty and staff for being there for our staff and students over the past few days. We offer our sincere sympathies to Jaydon's family and friends. May he rest in peace. Thank you, Mr. WillemsToday was Mr. Willems last day in his Grade 5/6 classroom. Mr. Willems has been filling in for Mrs. Skoglund, who has been away on maternity leave. Mr. Willems has been an excellent addition to our staff over the past few months and we would like to thank him for his contribution to our school community. Mrs. Skoglund has extended her maternity leave until the end of Spring Break, so Mr. Justin Antoski will be taking the role of the Grade 5/6 homeroom teacher. Mr. Antoski has been in and around the school since September as a supply teacher. He has filled in for many teachers in the building and is extremely excited to be taking on the role. The access room has been hopping!!Students in the Access classroom have been busy with their cross-curricular Winter Wonderland Unit! In addition to their regular duties and activities, they studied, “The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe” by C.S. Lewis. Students read and listened to the novel, answered questions, learned some new vocabulary and watched the movie. They compared and contrasted the book and the movie and wrote book reviews. Students even tried Turkish Delight for the first time, and painted a watercolour, Narnia-themed evergreen forest. The students also created a gingerbread village from recycled materials and enjoyed a Nutcracker themed day. They listened to the famous children’s story and did a directed drawing of a nutcracker. While they finished their art they listened to Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. When all their work was done, they enjoyed their own foray into the Land of Sweets with peppermint meringue cookies, chocolate covered pretzels, homemade hot chocolate and the cotton candy marshmallows they prepared themselves!
