Welcome back!We are less than a week away from the start of another school year. Our maintenance staff and teachers have been working to get the school ready for our students' return. This blog entry will include a number of important items for our school community to read. A knowledgeable group of families and students will lead to a great start to the year. We encourage you to read through the blog carefully. If you have questions, please email Mr. Watson or call the school. K-8 Families - strong beginnings - register onlineStrong Beginnings is a MANDATORY assessment that occurs early in September for students in Kindergarten to Grade 8. On Friday, September 13 and Monday, September 16, 2019, children will attend school by appointment for approximately 60 minutes to participate in assessment activities. The appointments on these days replace regular classes. This is an opportunity for teachers to extend and consolidate their understanding of each child in order to plan for instruction. This, in turn, will effectively address unique learning needs as early as possible in the new school year. All Grades K-8 students need to be registered for Strong Beginnings by Friday, September 6th. If you do not have a Conference Manager account, please access the site via our school's website or by clicking here. Vision HealthPresent research confirms the importance of vision and eye health on students’ learning. According to statistics provided by the Canadian Association of Optometrists, four out of every ten school-aged children have a vision problem that may negatively affect learning. Children who cannot see the board clearly, focus on a picture, or follow words in a book may not be able to reach their full potential. Manitoba Health covers the cost of children’s comprehensive eye examinations, therefore all families can access this free service. If you don’t currently have a family optometrist, you can find one by going to the MAO website at http://optometrists.mb.ca/find-an-optometrist.cfm and selecting Find an Optometrist, or call the Manitoba Association of Optometrists @ 204-943-9811. Hearing screeningPlease be advised that hearing screening will occur the week of September 17th-20th for ALL Kindergarten and Grade 1 students as well as ALL new K-12 students (to the division). The purpose of this screening is to identify children who may have educational difficulties due to the presence of undiagnosed permanent or long term hearing impairments. If the school detects hearing discrepancies at the first screening at the school, students are rescreened. If at that time, hearing difficulties persist, you will be sent a letter to indicate that further medical or audiologist assessments are required. This screening process will not be administered for any students with known hearing losses. If you have questions or wish to opt out of this screening for your child by contacting the school at 746.2612 extension 3239. Thank-you, Ashley Harrison K-6 Resource Teacher school supplies listsGrade 7-12 Lockers - change of procedureIn the past Grade 7 to 12 students have been assigned a lock to each locker for each student. This year, each student will be assigned a locker WITHOUT a lock. After the second week of school, if the student would like a lock, they will be able to request one at the office. This is also a reminder that students are asked to leave valuables at home. Early years (K-6) Guidance SurveyOur early years' guidance counselor, Ms. Charron, would appreciate our parents completing a quick survey. The survey will give her a parent perspective on how the her guidance office can assist with your student's development and experience at Morris School. The link to the survey can be accessed by clicking here Mavericks VolleyballThe Maverick women have been hard at work preparing for the upcoming volleyball season. The JV and Varsity girls have been training daily for the past two weeks. Both teams will be hosting tournaments in September. Drivers Education informationRegistration for the fall courses officially opened on August 19 and we need your help to create awareness of the program, roles and expectations among students, parents and co-pilots! Using a mix of online learning, in-class and in-car practice, Driver Z is designed to provide students with the knowledge, experience and confidence needed to be safe, responsible drivers. Our goal is to provide a world-class experience that prepares students, reduces collisions among drivers and ultimately contributes to safer roads for all of us! Your help in sharing the message regarding the new program and registration will ensure students don’t miss out on the opportunity to select a course that best fits their schedule. Key program changes:
Driver Z Program 2019/2020 Frequently Asked Questions This is a short FAQ to help answer questions about the Driver Z program at your school. Where can students go for information?
Where do students go to pay and register?
Will students be given priority to register for Driver Z courses at their own school? Each host school has selected reciprocity for their school. This information was previously collected from all school administrators – if you would like to review or change your current reciprocity agreement, please contact us. Students are grouped in two categories: Primary (usually students attending the host school) – Students in this group may register for courses as soon as registration is available. Secondary (usually students form other schools or divisions) – Students in this group may register for courses at the host school three to four weeks after those courses have been made available to the primary group. How do students and co-pilots access the online learning? Once students have registered, they will receive an email within 31 days of the course start date with instructions. They will be required to do the following:
It is important that students and co-pilots have separate email addresses to ensure they receive the appropriate emails for their role. For more information We’re excited about this program and what it will mean not just for students, but for overall road safety for everyone. We will continue to share updates with you on an ongoing basis. If you have any questions, please contact Driver Education by email or phone at (204) 985-7199 or toll-free at 1-800-261-9928. Program and registration information can also be found on mpi.mb.ca under Driver Z. Thanks again for being a vital part of the Driver Z team.
