Morris School remembersDespite the limitations we are faced with due to the current health orders, Morris School was determined to honour and celebrate those who have and continue to sacrifice so our school community can have the freedoms and privilege we experience everyday and possibly take for granted. Thanks to Mr. Lopez and his Maverick Media crew, Mrs. Zimmerman and the Senior Years' Concert Band, Captain Bettina McCulloch-Drake, and Mrs. Edel for creating a meaningful virtual experience for our school. Lest We Forget! Maverick Families - we need your help! We are getting into cold and flu season and of course, we are still dealing with Covid in our communities. We know that both vaccinated and unvaccinated people can spread covid which can lead to severe consequences for our students, staff, friends and loved ones. To help our community area and students/staff stay healthy and continue with in school learning, we ask that you please screen your children, even the teenagers, every day. And, we kindly ask that you keep sick students home. See the chart and Southern Health Requirements as of Oct. 15 for more info on symptoms and next steps. If your children have to be home sick, please enter it into the Safe Arrivals. You can email their teachers for work if needed or simply email or call the office and we can contact you to help with that. Work can be emailed, etc. Students who are attending school sick can spread illness to others and then those families in turn, are taking time off or getting their children tested. If we can help prevent some of that, that is a true act of kindness! IF you are unsure of next steps if your child is sick, please call Health Links: 1-888-315-9257 or 788-8200 OR the school to speak with Mike or Corinna in Administration. We are happy to help; we are all in this together. Thank you! varsity girls earn zone IV title! After 19 months without high school volleyball, our Varsity Girls team arrived back on the scene with a bang! In what turned out to be a tough five set match against our rivals, the Rosenort Redhawks, our Mavericks prevailed to capture the Zone IV 'AA' Girls Championship Banner. Next stop for our girls will be a Provincial Championship Regional Tournament hosted at Morris School next weekend. Stay tuned on Instagram for more information. Despite missing their coach and mentor, Mr. Lehmann (can't tell him that the Grade 11/12 Phys. Ed. class doesn't have its workplace safety issues), Mrs. Leflar and Mrs. Edel stepped up to help the girls through their final league game of the year. Thank you to all those who have supported the girls through their season. Finally, Morris School is proud of how the girls have come together to provide our school and each other such great memories. Way to Go, MAV's! Wise words from Mr. Lehmann... Congratulations to the varsity girls volleyball squad. They have come a long way since their first practice in late August. Throughout a covid-influenced season, the team has had to deal with 6 cancelled tournaments that they missed out on, and not having a game against another team until mid October. Since mid October, the girls have played 26 games over the span of 32 days. Their record is 19 wins and 7 losses, which has them ranked as the 8th place AA team in the entire province. This past week, the team defeated St.Paul’s Barons 3-1 in the playoff semi finals, and beat Rosenort 3-2 on Wednesday night to capture the Zone 4 AA Girls Volleyball banner! The team is far from finished though: They have their sights set on hosting a provincial qualifier tournament on November 20th (Morris School is the host school), followed by attending the Provincial Championships in early December. outdoor courts project christmas raffleOur Red River Wellness Committee continues to work hard to make two new outdoor courts at Morris School a reality. Our group's efforts to solicit local business, farms, and individuals for donations has allowed us earn over $50 000. We will be acknowledging our donors over the next few months with articles in the blog. We also have an online 50/50 raffle that hosts bi-weekly draws (https://raffle.link/rrwc); our next bi-weekly draw is November 23 with our Jackpot draw in March. Our newest endeavour is a Christmas Raffle. Thanks to the generous donations from the individuals and businesses below, we have an opportunity to raise some additional funds for the project. This raffle will be similar to what you see at a Social. A potential winner would purchase tickets and choose what prize they would like their ticket(s) to be drawn for. Our four prizes include a beautiful handmade quilt designed and created by our former Home Economics teacher, Ms. Janine Rivard, a Yeti cooler and mugs donated by Access Credit Union, $200 work of Co-op Gift card donated by Sun Valley Co-op, and a pair Jets tickets to see a game from the Budweiser Lounge, thanks to Rempel Insurance. To purchase your tickets, you can reach out to anyone listed below or we will be selling these tickets at Twister and Maverick Hockey games between now and the draw date (December 19). We have also recruited Mrs. Huska to assist with this raffle at the school. Who can say, 'no' to Mrs. Huska!?! We accept cash and e-transfers for the purchase of the tickets. You will also see two QR codes on the poster as well if you want to show your support by making a tax-deductible donation (cheques to Morris School) or you want to try your luck in our online 50/50 raffle. What a great way to support the project and possibly do some Christmas shopping at the same time!! Thank you, in advance, for your generosity. Mrs. Legary's recipe of the weekWe are fortunate to have great staff at Morris School. One of those staff is Mrs. Crystal Legary. Mrs. Legary, an alum of Morris School, works in our front office. However, she can be seen helping all over the school. One of the ways Mrs. Legary assists our students is by creating homemade soup for our free soup days. So many people have requested the recipes for her fine creations that it was suggested we publish it in our weekly blog. Well...the folks at the Morris School blog office aren't ones to keep things from our audience, so here's the first recipe of many from Mrs. Legary...Mrs. Legary, you are a gem! Thank you for all you do for our school! Male Athlete of month - Isaiah SmithIsaiah's selection for Athlete of Month for October is based on the fact he shows up and attempts to do his best every practice and game. Isaiah has improved immensely since the beginning of the season, taking in all of the coaching and putting it into practice. During one of our big wins he served 5 serves in a row and then doubled that to 10 in a row, in the next set he played. His attitude and athletic improvement over the season has been the example of what an athlete of the month should exemplify. Congratulations Isaiah!
