maverick welding benefits from grant awardOur Maverick Welding program, lead by Mr. Ian Hiker, recently received some news that lifted their spirits. Our welding program was awarded a Skills Strategy Equipment Enhancement Fund (SSEEF) Grant to the tune of $44 502. The grant will be used to purchase three new welding machines that will be used to train our students using the same equipment that is used in industry (Pictured below). According to the Technology Education section of the Province of Manitoba's Education and Early Childhood Learning website, "The Skills Strategy Equipment Enhancement Fund provides targeted funding to ensure that students have access to state of the art equipment to learn the high-demand skills they need to get good jobs in Manitoba's growing economy. The Skills Strategy Equipment Enhancement Fund provides $1,500,000.00 to improve technical vocational and industrial arts programs in Grades 7–12. This support is intended to ensure that programming is relevant to current and future labour market needs. This fund will focus on preparing students to take advantage of employment opportunities in Manitoba’s growing economy and to continue the development of Manitoba’s skilled workforce. The fund will further support the need for advanced equipment pertaining to “Green Jobs” in Manitoba. Particular emphasis will be placed on supporting high school level programs to become accredited with Apprenticeship Manitoba." Semester 1 final exams are getting close!!Our Grade 9 through 12 students have exams scheduled for the end of their first semester. A complete schedule can be found below. If your student's course is not listed, it means that certain subject area teachers have chosen to use some other form of summative assessment for their students, therefore no formal exam will be scheduled. More details will be provided in next week's blog regarding the expectations during the exam period for our Grades 9-12 students. Specifics with regards to each exam (format, percentage of final grade, etc) can be obtained from their respective classroom teacher. We would encourage students to start developing a study schedule that will assist them in reserving some time over the next few weeks to ensure they are adequately prepared for this part of their courses. The following excerpt from Kidshelphone.ca summarizes some very good tips for students preparing for exams... It’s common to feel stressed before taking a test, especially if you don’t feel prepared. Keeping up good study habits will help you remember things at test time so you can earn better grades. Here are some study tips to help you prepare for a test: 1. Start early: start studying several days before the test/exam. You’ll have more time to learn and remember what you need to know and the information will stay in your long-term memory for final exams. Cramming the night before will increase your stress and only puts the information in your short-term memory, so you’ll likely forget and have to relearn it at the end of the term. 2. Stay positive: remember that it’s within your ability to do well on the test/exam. Try not to put too much pressure on yourself. 3. Set priorities: spend most of your study time on what’s most important for the test/exam. If you’re not sure what that is, ask your teacher. If your teacher has spent a lot of time on something in class, it’s probably important to know. 4. Make study sheets: try to summarize the main ideas in a few points. Make a single page of notes and review it several times. 5. Get help: ask your teacher to explain any material that you don’t understand. You can also ask a friend or classmate for help. 6. Go to the review class: many teachers review the important material during the class before a test or exam. It’s a good idea to attend and take as many notes as you can. This is also your chance to ask questions. Remember: study as best as you can and get a good night’s sleep before the test! We wish all of our students well as they prepare. exam logistics It has been a while since we've had a formal exam period. With them quickly approaching, the blog staff would like communicate information regarding the logistics of the exam week.
bus riding policy clarificationThe school has received some emails and notes over the last couple of weeks giving students permission to ride a bus with another student they are visiting. These notes will not be honoured as only the students who are regular riders on buses will be allowed to ride on their assigned bus. Switching of busses or a non-bus riding student catching a ride is not allowed as per a divisional policy. trivia for maddoxgrade 5/6 fundraising endeavourCOFFEE FUNDRAISERS FOR OUR CONCERT BANDIf anyone is interested in supporting a grade 9-12 band student for their trip to Edmonton in the Spring, we are now selling Negash Coffee until January 20th. Both games have been rescheduled to Thursday, Feb. 2. This weekend, the Varsity Girls saw their first tournament action in Rosenort. They dropped their first game to the defending Provincial Champions from Prairie Mountain before defeating Shevchenko 64-51. On Saturday they played through fatigue and foul trouble but fell short to William Morton. The Varsity Boys also had a rough start as they faced Gab. Roy, the defending Provincial Champions on the boys side. However, they bounced back on Saturday, defeating RVS 72-29. This week, we host a triple-header with Shevchenko on Wednesday (JV Boys @ 4:30, Varsity Girls @ 6, and Varsity Boys @ 7:30) and a double-header with Rosenort on Thursday (Varsity Girls @ 6:00 and Varsity Boys @ 7:30). Hockey: The boys had a busy, but successful, week with three league games scheduled. The MAVs went undefeated, with wins over GVC (3-1), NPC (4-0), and Mountain (5-0). They have another busy week ahead where they will travel to Treherne Tuesday to play the Tigers followed by home games on Wednesday (7:30pm start vs. GVC) and Saturday (1:00pm start vs. PCI). Wrestling: Our Maverick Wrestling program traveled to Winnipeg on Saturday to participate in our first wrestling tournament of the season, hosted at Elmwood High School. Twelve Maverick Wrestlers tested themselves against the competition, with seven of the twelve wrestling in their first tournament EVER! Our wrestlers learned/were reminded just how intense this type of competition is and rose to that challenge. Congratulations Maverick Wrestlers. Our Maverick Wrestlers achieved the following results:
fishing club updateOn Friday,January 13th, the fishing club gathered for their first on-ice fishing experience of the winter. They went to the junction of the Morris River and Red River and fished for 2 hours. Apparently the fish were either too smart, or not very hungry, because the group only caught one Sauger. But, I guess that's why they call it FISHING, and not CATCHING. The electric ice auger that was generously donated by Nathan at Super Thrifty Pharmacy and Dan at Rat River Outdoors (St. Pierre) worked phenomenal! The students enjoyed their opportunity to use the auger as well. On Wednesday January 18th, the Fishing Club and Gr. 10 Outdoor Ed students were joined online by a special guest speaker. Brock, who works with Manitoba Wildlife and Fish Enhancement, discussed the following topics with the students: Stocking fish in certain lakes, tagging and studying fish species, enhancing fish spawning areas, managing beaver populations, depth-mapping lakes, etc. The students were very intrigued by how many hours it takes to fully map a small lake, and that there are 3 Arctic Char stocked lakes in Manitoba's Parkland region! Here are some pictures of the ice fishing evening and the guest speaker presentation, as well as a THANK YOU poster for our Fishing Club sponsors.
