Boil water advisoryThe Province of Manitoba has issued a Boil Water Advisory that will affect Morris School tomorrow (May 30) beginning at 8 am. The school will have alternative water sources, but we encourage families to send extra water with your students tomorrow. If you would like more information, please check out a link to the Boil Water Advisory Fact Sheet here. Five year old chicken farmers! Our kindergarten classes are skilled "Poultry Farmers!" The nine eggs have hatched. Thanks to generous parental support, Morris School is currently housing nine live chicks. The kindergarten room was abuzz with excitement this week as numerous people, young and old, visited the class. Another example of some quality active project-based learning has been happening while the students patiently waited for their friends to arrive. Our students understand the life cycle of a chicken as well as the reason for incubators and what it takes for the chicks to thrive after they hatch. The learning will continue until the chicks leave for their permanent homes. Congratulations Mavericks! It's never too late to curl! Our Grade 7/8's took part in a grade level bonspiel this past week as a wrap up to the excellent instruction provided by the coaches from the Morris Curling Club. Special thanks to Mrs. Chris and Mr. Lorne Hamblin for organizing the instruction and bonspiels for our Grades 5-8 students. We all hope the exposure to the great sport of curling will be enough to convince some of our students to take up the sport in the future. Band concert - June 5 - calling all alumniAs we announced in last week's blog, Mrs. Penno is retiring. So...we have a chance to honour Mrs. Penno, while allowing our alumni to have some fun at the same time. Wednesday, June 5th will be Mrs. Penno's final Morris School Band Concert. As per last week's blog post, Mrs. Penno is inviting any of her former students to join in the performance of the Mass Band song at the June 5 Spring Concert. Please contact her to receive your music. What a great way to send Mrs. Penno off into her new chapter of life by having too many alumni wanting to play...we love good problems! Grad 2019 - Information MeetingAs June approaches, Grad 2019 is just around the corner. The Grad Committee is planning an information meeting on Thursday, June 6. The meeting is for all Class of 2019 students as well as their parents and guardians. Speaking of Grad, we had one parent indicate an interest in assisting with the organization of a Safe Grad. Safe Grad is primarily a parent run event. Having one parent responsible for the execution of the entire event would not be fair. So the decision has been made...Morris School will not be offering a Safe Grad option for the class of 2019. Please see Mr. Watson if you have any questions. Mavericks hit the beach!Rain couldn't stop the Mavericks from hitting the beach courts on the weekend. In only the school's second year of participating, Morris athletes could be spotted all over the courts at the 2019 High School Beach Volleyball Championships. Overall, the Mavs finished the weekend with a total record of 22-20. Top finishers were Bryce and Andrew who went undefeated up until the quarter-finals (top 8 out of 60 teams). On the girls' side, Jayda and Chloe also made it through their round robin undefeated, and won their first playoff game, putting them into the top 32 out of more than 100 teams. All teams played with passion and integrity, and a had a ton of fun in the sand. The grade 9's will have another opportunity to strut their stuff on June 7th for the Junior High Beach Volleyball Championships. Morris students shine on the diamond!Morris 15U baseball team braved the elements and battled hard to secure a second place finish at the Wayne Tucker tournament in Winnipeg this weekend. Saturday was a close game vs. Winkler Athletics that resulted in a 9-6 loss to start the round robin, but then things changed around and the team started a 3 game winning streak! The first team to go down was Kenora by a score of 12-8. Sunday morning the team was up bright and early to play at 8:30 and make up the Friday night game that had been rained out. Turns out morning games suit us just fine as we beat the Winnipeg South Trailblazers by a score of 16-7 and advanced to the semi finals. The semi finals matched us up with Winkler Dodgers and it was a nail biter! Down 9-6 at the bottom of the 4th, Morris dug in deep to pull off 2 runs in the 5th, and a final 2 runs in the 6th while holding Winkler at 9! Anyone from Morris knows beating Winkler in baseball is HUGE! The final game ended in a loss to Rosenort...but let's just reflect on that semi-final win against Winkler! The next home game for Morris 15U is Thursday, May 30 , 2019 at 6:45 vs. Morden. Hope to see you there! RAPID ACCESS TO ADDICTIONS MEDICINE (RAAM) WHAT IS A RAAM CLINIC AND WHO IS IT FOR? RAAM clinics are walk-in clinics for adults (ages 18+) looking to get help with high-risk substance use and addiction. (If 16 or 17 year olds show up to RAAM, they will be given support and resources for where they can go for help such as Compass Youth Program or Youth detox, always best to call helpline before showing up). This includes people who want to try medical assistance to reduce or stop their substance use. They may experience frequent intoxication or overdose symptoms, as well as unpleasant withdrawal symptoms when attempting to reduce or stop their substance use. RAAM clinics are also for people who may have substance-related health issues, such as hepatitis, pancreatitis and infections. No referral is needed. RAAM clinics are not for people needing urgent medical attention for serious physical problems or mental health symptoms such as psychosis (paranoia, delusions, hallucinations), agitation; who are at active risk of harm to self or others, or who require police/security involvement. It can be very difficult to accept that your substance use is problematic, and it’s normal to feel ashamed, frightened, or angry. But the good news is that medical treatment for problematic substance use and addiction is safe and effective. People can and do recover from addiction. You don’t need an appointment, just show up during clinic hours. If you have a Manitoba Health card or Manitoba Health number, please bring this along. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I GO TO A RAAM CLINIC? If you’re feeling anxious or hesitant about going to the RAAM clinic, consider bringing a supportive person with you. This may make you feel less overwhelmed and less alone. The clinic team will complete a health history including questions about your substance use such as:
SUBSTANCE USE CONDITIONS ARE TREATABLE. Once the health history is complete, the RAAM clinic team will make treatment recommendations. There are four options:
