Concert Band performs at Optimist FestivalThe Morris School Blog was remiss in reporting on the happenings of our Morris School Concert Band. The Senior Concert Band participated in the Winnipeg Optimist Festival on February 21. They performed two selections: Reflections and An Irish Legend. Thank you to the family and friends who were in attendance for their performance. One of the family members commented afterwards that while Reflections was being performed, it reminded her of a Disney movie, when Cinderella was dressed in her beautiful gown and dancing at the ball. We would like to thank the members of the Senior Concert Band students, led by Mrs. Heather Penno, for representing our school so well! Spirit Week - March 11 to March 15Morris School Spirit Week has been moved up a week. We will update the K-6 group on their colours for Thursday as soon as possible. More information will also be forthcoming in the next 24-48 hours about the MAV's/Sports Day on Friday. Mr. Watson will email all the information to students, parents, and staff as well as post information in the Instagram and Twitter pages. We encourage as many students as possible to get into the "spirit." We thank the Student Leadership Group and Ms. Angela Bahnman, in advance, for their work to make Spirit Week work. Morris Mavericks - provincial champions!!Fresh off a Zone 4 championship, the Morris Mavericks left a packed gym pep rally headed to Cartwright to participate in the 2019 AA MHSAA Provincial Hockey Championships. The Mavericks finished their pool play undefeated with wins over the Mountain Mustangs and the Killarney Raiders. Cody Clark led the Mavericks on the ice with 10 points in two games (that's not a typo)! Justin Keck wasn't far behind with 7 points. Sean Coulombe and Sean Penner both earned wins in goal during pool play. The above success earned the Mavericks a trip to the semi-finals against their Zone 4 rival, Pembina Tigers. The Mavericks survived a spirited contest, taking the semi-final 3-2. The semi-final win put our Mavericks one step away from their goal, but the Hamiota Huskies stood in their way. The Mavericks were up to the test as Keck stepped up again, pacing the Mavericks with two goals. Sean Penner turned away all but one shot, to help the Morris Mavericks earn the 2018/19 AA MHSAA Hockey Championship! Morris School would like to congratulate and thank the team, volunteer coaches (led by Mr. Barry Lewis), managers, and parents for their great contribution to the school. You provided a high level of entertainment, sportsmanship, and class on the ice as you represented our school. We hope this season has provided significant memories and lessons. Way to go, MAV's! Parent Workshop - Anxiety in Youth - March 19Hot dog day - the sequel!!Yearbooks for sale...here!!Yearbook orders will also be available on the school's online payment system as well. Please wait two or three school days for this to become available. Movie Night...the third!!What a great Event - Thank you, Winnipeg Jets!Morris School was the beneficiary of the immense resources of the True North Sports and Entertainment Group on Tuesday. The Winnipeg Jets, Manitoba Moose, and Project 11 came to town and had blanketed our school with activities, information, giveaways, entertainment, and a ton of fun! The day started with our K to 4 students participating in Yoga sessions as well as classroom presentations from the Project 11 staff. Project 11 is designed to help support students and teachings in bringing mental health awareness, along with positive coping skills into their lives. Teachers were left with resources and access to the full Project 11 curriculum with the invitation to use as much of it as they see fit. The K-4 group was also treated to a pizza lunch with Mick E. Moose! The next portion of the day featured two presentations from Mr. Craig Heisinger. "Zinger" is the Winnipeg Jets Senior Vice President & Director of Hockey Operations, and Assistant General Manager, as well as the Manitoba Moose General Manager. More importantly, for our context, Zinger was a friend to Rick Rypien. Project 11 was created in honour of Zinger’s close friend, Rick Rypien and his desire to help kids by offering mental health education and support. Zinger will share his heartfelt story about his friendship with Rypien and the message that is being carried on through Project 11. Well...Zinger helped to keep Rypien legacy going with two engaging presentations to our 9-12 and 5-8 students. Our day continued with former Moose and Jets, Derek Meech and Mark Stuart, worked with our Hockey Academy students and then our Provincial Champion, Morris Mavericks, with some on ice work. The day concluded with over 500 fans attending the finale of the Jets' Town Takeover with the livestream event of the Winnipeg Jets vs the Tampa Bay Lightning. Despite the result (Jets downed 5-2), the atmosphere and the community building opportunity was a complete hit. On behalf of Morris School and its community, we would like to thank the True North Sports & Entertainment group from visiting our school. It's an event we will remember!
