Way to go, MAV's! progress reports have been printed and sent! The Morris School progress reports have been handed to your student. IF your student hasn't given you the progress report, I would ask your student the location of said report. If you have any questions, please call the school. Safearrival app coming May 6Morris School will be launching the SafeArrival application on Monday, May 6. A letter detailing the process has been sent with the progress reports. We would encourage you to read the letter and familiarize yourself with the process for reporting absences to the school. Our senior years students (Grades 7-12) will have attendance checked for every period of the day. Notification of absences will continue to be sent to parents for each period, unless the parent uses the SafeArrival app or calls the school to excuse the absence. If you have any questions regarding the launch of this process, please call the school. Grade 5/6 Rocks!!Through the month of April, the 5/6 classes participated in a Learn to Curl program as part of their Phys. Ed. class. The program was held at the Morris Curling Club and organized by Mrs. Kurylko, Mr. Scott Stevenson, and Mrs. Charron. Chris and Lorne Hamblin and their team of volunteers taught students how to throw a curling rock, basic rules of the sport, and how to sweep. It was a great opportunity for students to try a new sport from first class instructors. On April 24th, the 5/6 classes participated in a Curling Funspiel at the curling club. Students played two end games in a semi-competitive format. This was great exposure to the sport and students really enjoyed working as a team. Good Job Mavs! Big thanks to the Morris Curling Club, their instructors, and all the organizers. MOrris School Golf clubMorris school golf club will be taking place Mondays and Thursdays in May starting on May 6th. Thanks to the Riverview Golf Course there will be no cost for this club. All practices will take place at the golf course and run from 3:45 until approximately 5:30. Golf club is open to all students from grade 5 through 12. Contact Mr. Cox ([email protected]) for more details. Our mav's continue to create change!Mavs Create Change had a successful ice cream sale this past Tuesday. Our many Mav volunteers took orders from each class in the K-6 wing, filled those orders, and then delivered the ice cream. It was so successful that we ran out! The first flavour to go was vanilla, followed by neapolitan, and lastly chocolate. Mavs Create Change took in $101 from this fundraiser. This will go towards providing clean water to an impoverished village in a developing country. Mavs Create Change thanks all of the K-6 students and staff for their support! Mehgan's Musings...Addictions Foundation of Manitoba (AFM) Writer: Mehgan Smith, AFM counsellor for RRVSD AFM established the Knowledge Exchange Centre as a hub for information sharing on leading-edge, evidence-informed practices in addictions programming and research for the addictions field in Manitoba. We often ask ourselves: “why don’t they just quit?” The Answer to this question is complex and unique to each person’s circumstances. When an individual becomes dependent, even if they want to stop, they may not be able to. Support and non-judgement are key! It is all too common to engage in snap judgements such as “people use drugs because they are weak or they abuse alcohol because they lack morals”. We judge them for the behavior that we see and we often don’t bother to find out what’s underneath it. This ever present stigma often leads people who battle substance abuse often feel ashamed and misunderstood. In our achievement focused, success driven society; dependency on drugs is seen as a sign of inadequacy. The biggest revelation in recent years is that we are beginning to understand the relationship between trauma and substance abuse. Dependency to drugs is primarily a consequence of adverse childhood experiences as well as lack of prevention and education. With this being said mental health and the field of addiction really goes hand in hand. Removing the Stigma –
