Oscar Imade had the highest finish for the Mavs, losing in the semi-finals. The girls' doubles teams of Isabelle Gross/Natalie Levasseur and Sam Storck/Ally Sawatsky both lost in the quarter-finals. On Thursday the squad travelled to Carman. On the way to Carman, Mr. Watson's reliable Honda got a flat tire just west of Kane. That is when the pit crew (aka Les Dyck) sprung into action! Les saved the day with not only a tire iron and a jack but a new tire as well! Mr. Dyck's bid to be tournament MVP came up just short however as several Mavericks advanced to the playoffs. Erin Hamblin lost her quarter-final match to the eventual silver medalist in girls' singles. The mixed team of Brooklyn Williamson/Garland Labauza as well as the girls' doubles team of Ally Sawatsky/Sam Storck both lost in the quarter-finals. Jenna Sabourin was the top Maverick performer on the day making it all the way to the finals where she lost a tight battle, 21-18. Next week is the regional playoffs and zone playoffs for those who qualify. The JV regionals are on Monday in Carman and the Varsity regionals are in Portage on Tuesday. "Conversation Circles," orchestrated by Destiny Klassen and assisted by several community volunteers, practices English skills and connects each week. The group is progressing well as they become more comfortable with our community. Somewhere between 3 and 14 people attend. During the past few weeks, it has been Ramadan which means many clients are not able to attend and they've had smaller groups. The people have appreciated having a space to practice English skills and connect each week. We are happy to contribute as a school by providing the space for these types of activities to occur. kitchen project fundraiser - get your tickets! The school's Kitchen Renovation Project is working in conjunction with the upcoming Morris & Area Recreation's Spring Fling Vendor & Craft Market (April 27 - Morris Multiplex) to run a Wine Raffle and 50/50 Draw. We are grateful to the WISE instructors and the program for attending our school and providing us with this experience. Thank you to those who arranged the presentation as well. badminton smashes it in st. jean-baptiste!The varsity badminton team travelled all the way to St. Jean for a tournament this week. The sister-brother Sanders duo made it the farthest into the playoffs, losing in the semi-finals. Next week the JV team participate in 2 tournaments, the first of which is in St. Jean on Wednesday and the second is in Carman on Thursday. girls flag football continue to competeOur girls' hopped on the bus again this past Wednesday and headed into Winnipeg for two games against those big bad schools in Winnipeg!! First up was the Miles Mac Buckeyes. A back-and-forth affair was capped off by a clutch touchdown and 1-point conversion to elevate the Mavericks to victory 19-12. The next game against the Murdoch Mackay Clansmen was a tight defensive battle. Our Mavericks' first offensive series resulted in a touchdown and that was enough for our defence. Mavericks 7; Clansmen 0. The two wins put the Mavericks in a tie for first place in the Zach Collaros division of the Blue Bombers High School Girls Flag Football League. The girls play two more games this Wednesday against what appears to be our toughest test yet (schedule below). Once report cards have been successfully uploaded, you will be able to download and view them exclusively from a computer or internet browser and not via the app. These report cards will be accessible via the documents section of your parent account. new date set for parent council info meetingWe had originally planned to host a member of the Manitoba Association of Parent Councils in November. They were unable to attend due to personal reasons. We are happy to announce that we have rescheduled this information meeting for the evening of Tuesday, April 30 at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the music/band room. As you may or may not be aware, Morris School does not have a school-based parent group (parent council). We're hoping the meeting on the 30th of April will be the first step in changing this. (a) According to the Resource Guide for Manitoba’s Parent Advisory Councils, PACs are created for a reason, and it is important to discuss and decide together what that purpose will be within a school community. The Parent Advisory Council within a school has many functions and roles. Examining this purpose may lead to the development of your PAC mission statement. Some of the areas a PAC might work in include:
(c) Membership in the Morris School PAC includes adults interested in the objectives of the PAC who are parents/guardians of children enrolled in the School. These individuals are entitled to and may become members of the Parent Council upon being elected. Please contact Mr. Watson directly if you have an interest or questions. solar eclipse - monday, April 8thAn email was sent home on Friday, April 5th with a letter detailing Morris School's plan to manage the risk that the solar eclipse could bring to our school community. The letter reads as follows... Dear Parents/Guardians, I am writing to inform you about an upcoming celestial event that is both exciting and potentially hazardous if not approached with caution. On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse is set to occur, with Manitoba experiencing an approximate 50 percent occlusion eclipse. A solar eclipse is undoubtedly a fascinating phenomenon that can captivate people of all ages. However, it's crucial to emphasize the importance of safety, particularly when it comes to observing the eclipse directly. Even a glance at the partially eclipsed sun can result in permanent vision damage. As educators and caregivers, it's our responsibility to ensure the well-being of our students during this event. Therefore, to ensure their safety, Morris School will be implementing additional measures. We will be keeping students indoors from noon until we dismiss everyone at 3:20 p.m. This timeframe encompasses the duration of the eclipse and minimizes the risk of students viewing it without appropriate eye protection. In light of this, we recommend that town students bring their lunches on this day to ensure they can stay indoors during the eclipse period. Additionally, if any students feel they cannot stay inside for the duration mentioned above, we ask that parents consider excusing them for the afternoon. This decision is made in the interest of the safety of our entire school community. To commemorate this event, Ms. Kulbaba's class will be hosting a Solar Eclipse Watch Party in Room 14 from 1 to 2 p.m. Invitations will be sent out to homerooms for Grades K-6 students. Other staff in other grades may also be organizing indoor watch activities for students as well. In collaboration with Manitoba Education and Early Childhood Learning, we have access to resources and guidance on solar eclipses, including information on how to view them safely. I encourage you to review these materials and discuss them with your child to reinforce the importance of safety during the eclipse. If you have any questions or concerns regarding our plans for the solar eclipse, please don't hesitate to reach out to me. Sincerely, Mike Watson picking up and dropping off - please help us!!Several cars travel down Toronto Avenue every morning and every day after school to drop off and pick up their students. The ONLY way this can seamlessly work is if people DO NOT park in the turnaround circle at the far east end of our school. Parking in the circle causes multiple issues. If you are waiting for your student, you can park along Toronto Avenue up to the far east end of the school building; not beyond it. You can now also park in the lot beside our new outdoor courts facility. Please remind your student to not use the street or the turnaround circle to access your vehicle in the parking lot for safety reasons. They should walk around the circle to get to your car. We thank those who work hard at being patient, parking in the right locations and watching out for our students. You are appreciated and we are grateful for you. does your child have a loaner laptop @ home?Attention Parents and Students: If you have borrowed a loaner laptop and/or charger from the office, you must return it promptly. We are currently missing several items, and their timely return is crucial. Additionally, please ensure to monitor your student email accounts closely, as the office will be reaching out to students with outstanding loaner laptops next week. Your immediate cooperation in this matter is expected and appreciated. maverick girls make historyA group of 17 young people from Morris School are making history. For the first time in school history, a girls' flag football team is playing in a league with 18 other teams with the goals of competing well, having fun, and learning a game that is just waiting for them to take advantage of. The girls have been practicing for a few short weeks, learning the game and working on their skills. Their first game was this past Wednesday. After spending an hour participating in a skills camp hosted by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the girls took on the Royals from Windsor Park Collegiate. After a slow start, the girls rebounded with Bethany Wiebe throwing a touchdown pass to Jenna Sabourin. Two other touchdowns were scored by Molly Sanders, including two, one-point convert attempts; Wiebe was the quarterback for each of the three touchdowns. Darci Epp intercepted the Royals signal caller, and Faith Rempel was credited with a sack, multiple quarterback hurries, and one safety when she flagged the ball carrier in the end zone. The girls continue to prepare for their next opponents this upcoming Wednesday. The schedule can be found below. badminton news! The Mavericks varsity badminton team travelled to Carman this week to participate in their first tournament of the year. It was a great learning experience for all players. The mixed team of Brooklyn Williamson and Garland Labauza made it to the playoff round where they lost in the quarterfinals. Georson, and the rest of the varsity team, will be looking for revenge this Tuesday when they head down Highway 75 for the St. Jean tournament. Antoski and siemens enjoy rugby in floridaOver spring break, two members of the Morris School community participated in a rugby experience in Florida. The last week was a busy oneThe week before spring break was jam-packed! Spirit week, Staff vs Students Basketball AND Hockey games, and a leadership conference thrown in as a cherry on top of the sundae! Congratulations to our student leadership group for surviving! We hope the members of this group used the spring break to relax! a maverick plays chess over the break! The Manitoba High School Chess Championship was held on March 26 at Sisler High School in Winnipeg with 58 students participating in a seven-round Swiss tournament. Tate Brandt from Morris School (Gr. 12) entered the tournament. In a Swiss Tournament, the first game is a random match-up, and then winners play winners and losers play losers from the previous round. As you win, you also move up table numbers, so the best players finish the day at the lowest table numbers. Tate started strong with a win and then played one of his most competitive matches of the day which nearly ended in a draw, but ended up being a loss for Tate. His next game was a moment of mental fatigue, so he finished the morning with a win and two losses. After a pizza lunch, Tate went on to win his next two matches before a third loss of the day. Heading into his final match he was ranked 22nd, and was able to defeat his opponent, to finish with a 4 win, 3 loss record and with 4.0 tournament points. The winner of the event was Rhailey Punay (6.0 points) of Regent Park School who won on a tiebreak. The winner of the team event (based on scores of their top 3 players) was Daniel McIntyre with 14.0 points. This is the third straight year the high school championship has been hosted at Sisler by a student group that collected donations toward supporting Ukraine. Chess is a game that crosses language barriers for newcomers who are developing connections in a new country. It definitely was a welcoming yet competitive environment. Tate highly recommends this event to future Morris School chess players. It was an awesome experience! early years' book tournament update
grad prom committee fundraiser! The following information has been emailed to parents of the members of the Class of 2024. On March 11, 2024, the Prom Committee met to discuss fundraising ideas. It was decided that we would start by selling Bill's Pizza. It is strongly encouraged that each graduate attending Prom sell 16 pizzas for $10.00 per pizza. Morris Bigway has graciously committed to purchasing 8 pizzas per graduate that sells pizza. There is huge potential here to fundraise a lot of money for YOUR prom. If you do not wish to fundraise there is a buyout option of $100.00. Attached is an order form for your graduate to complete. Copies are also available at the School Office. Order forms must be returned to Morris School with cash or cheque made payable to MORRIS GRAD 2024 BEFORE Friday, April 26. Bill's Pizza will contact your graduate when their order is ready sometime in early to mid-May. You will be responsible for delivering the orders to your customers. If we do not raise a sufficient amount of money we will consider holding a Car Wash in late May / early June. OR your Prom ticket prices will be at a higher cost. If you have any questions don't hesitate to reach out. Thanks, Annette Rist-Bergstresser [email protected] manitoba author visits our schoolThe Middle Years students along with Mrs. Clayton's ELA class, and Mrs. Leflar's Indigenous Studies class had the opportunity to listen and ask questions from a local author, David Roberston. It was an awesome opportunity to have him present to us! upcoming solar eclipseWe received the following information from the Province just before Spring Break. Our school will be creating an appropriate and safe plan for our students on April 8. This will be published in next weekend's blog. The main body of the letter from the Province to our school reads... A total solar eclipse is set to occur on April 8, 2024, between approximately noon and 3 p.m. Central Standard Time, spanning from Southern Ontario to Newfoundland and Labrador, with the rest of Canada experiencing a partial eclipse. Manitoba will experience an approximate 50 percent occlusion eclipse. This is an awe-inspiring event that will draw the gaze of people; however, there is a risk of permanent vision damage if proper precautions are not taken. Even a brief look at the partially eclipsed sun can result in permanent damage. Children and students may need extra supervision during the eclipse, as they may not fully comprehend the risks involved. Early learning and childcare facilities and schools are encouraged to have plans in place to keep children indoors during the afternoon to ensure they don’t view the eclipse unless appropriate eye protection is available and worn. Note that anyone who may not understand the risk or have difficulty following safety instructions is at greater risk. Manitoba Education and Early Childhood Learning has consulted and collaborated with Manitoba Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care, to develop the attached guidance on solar eclipses. This resource includes a general overview, risks, and information on how to view eclipses safely. Eleven members of the Mavericks fishing club went to Balsam Bay on Lake Winnipeg and were joined by 680 other students from 42 high schools across the province. The day started off frantically, with students literally sprinting across the ice at 9:30 am sharp, to attempt to claim a fishing hole that they thought would produce some fish! At 10 am, a horn sounded and immediately students could begin fishing. Within the first 23 minutes of the derby, 25 fish were caught and measured! The action slowed slightly after this, and in 3.5 hours, a total of 57 fish were caught. Our school was one of the 30 schools to get 'skunked', and unfortunately not catch any fish. But our students still participated and won some random competitions, including; a bare-handed push-up contest, fishing trivia, and a casting accuracy competition. The students enjoyed their time, and we will eagerly look forward to improving our fortunes at next year's provincial derby!
